Job description

Summary of Position

The Animal Breeder is responsible for developing and implementing breeding programs designed to improve genetic performance, reproductive efficiency, and overall herd productivity. This position analyzes genetic data, evaluates breeding stock, and applies scientific breeding principles to enhance desirable traits within the herd. The Animal Breeder works closely with production, veterinary, and genetics teams to achieve long-term genetic improvement objectives.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Maintain and monitor overall animal health, care and treatment by Tyson and PQA+ standards including recorded keeping therein
  • Maintain accurate production records following company SOPs and protocols
  • Develop and implement breeding strategies to improve genetic performance and herd productivity.
  • Evaluate breeding stock based on genetic, reproductive, and performance data.
  • Select animals for mating programs to achieve targeted genetic outcomes.
  • Analyze pedigree, performance, and reproductive records to support breeding decisions.
  • Monitor reproductive performance indicators and recommend program adjustments as needed.
  • Collaborate with veterinarians and production personnel to optimize herd health and reproductive success.
  • Maintain accurate breeding, pedigree, and genetic records.
  • Interpret genetic evaluations and utilize genetic selection tools to support herd improvement goals.
  • Assess offspring performance and make recommendations for future breeding selections.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of genetic improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with company breeding protocols, animal welfare standards, and biosecurity requirements.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Animal Science or a related field preferred; equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • Eligibility for a TN profession under the USMCA/NAFTA framework, such as Animal Scientist, Agriculturist, Geneticist, Veterinarian, or Scientific Technician/Technologist, is preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in swine breeding, genetics, reproduction, or livestock production.
  • Knowledge of animal genetics, breeding principles, reproductive management, and performance evaluation.
  • Ability to analyze data and make scientifically supported breeding recommendations.
  • Experience with breeding records, genetic databases, and herd management software preferred.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Regular, consistent attendance is required with the availability to work every other weekend, as well as flexibility in hours during health and staffing challenges.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, move or carry up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, push, pull, bend, stoop, kneel, and squat for extended period of time on varied surfaces and capable of being on their feet for up to 10 hours a day
  • Ability to work in noise levels that may require hearing protection
  • Ability to reach with hands and arms, balance, and climb over gates up to 48 inches in height
  • Must possess ambulatory skills sufficient to move throughout the farm
  • Must possess good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including the use of hands to finger, handle, grasp or feel objects, tools, controls, or animals
