What are the different jobs in anesthesiology?

In anesthesiology, common roles include anesthesiologists who administer anesthesia and monitor patients during surgery, anesthesia technicians who prepare equipment and assist anesthesiologists, and pain management specialists who focus on chronic pain treatment. These professionals work in hospitals, surgical centers, and clinics, often requiring certification and specialized training in anesthesia techniques and patient care. Other related roles include nurse anesthetists, who are advanced practice providers administering anesthesia under supervision, and anesthesiology researchers involved in clinical studies.

What are some common challenges anesthesiologists face during surgery, and how are they addressed?

Anesthesiologists frequently encounter challenges such as rapidly changing patient conditions, unexpected reactions to anesthesia, and communication with surgical teams during critical moments. To address these, anesthesiologists must stay vigilant, adapt anesthesia plans on the fly, and maintain clear communication with surgeons and nurses. Continuous professional development and simulation training also help anesthesiologists stay prepared for rare or complex scenarios, ensuring patient safety remains the top priority.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an anesthesiologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Anesthesiologist, you need an MD or DO degree, completion of a residency in anesthesiology, and board certification, along with in-depth knowledge of pharmacology, physiology, and perioperative medicine. Expertise in anesthesia delivery systems, patient monitoring technology, and advanced airway management tools is essential. Excellent attention to detail, rapid decision-making, and strong communication skills set outstanding anesthesiologists apart. These competencies are vital for ensuring patient safety, managing critical situations, and collaborating effectively with surgical teams.

What is an anesthesiologist?

Anesthesiologists are medical doctors who specialize in administering anesthesia and managing pain before, during, and after surgical procedures. They monitor patients’ vital signs and adjust anesthetic levels to ensure patient safety and comfort throughout surgery. In addition to their role in the operating room, anesthesiologists also provide pain management for patients with chronic conditions and assist with critical care in emergency situations.

How hard is it to get hired as an anesthesiologist?

Getting hired as an anesthesiologist can be competitive due to high demand for specialized medical professionals, but strong educational credentials, residency training, board certification, and clinical experience improve job prospects. Job description

You have a career. Now live your life, too.
MD Anesthesiologist - Office-Based Pediatric Dental Multiple openings across Oregon & Washington | Exceptional Flexibility | Real Work-Life Balance
Oregon: Eugene • Lake Oswego • Medford • Portland • Roseburg • Salem • Springfield Washington: Federal Way • Pasco • Puyallup
At Ambulatory Anesthesia Care - Pacific Northwest (AAC-PNW), we deliver high-quality, office-based anesthesia across pediatric dental offices throughout the Pacific Northwest - and we're hiring across all of our markets.
We're seeking an MD Anesthesiologist comfortable practicing in office-based pediatric dental settings. Our patients are healthy pediatric dental patients (primarily ASA I), with efficient cases and short sedation and recovery times. No complex pediatric cases - just thoughtful, well-run care in a calm environment.
Why This Role Stands Out
Many of our dental offices start early and finish early, with days often wrapping up by 1-2 PM. That means more time for family, personal commitments, outdoor adventures, or simply enjoying where you live. We're open to building a schedule that works for you.
A Practice That's Growing
Our work today is 100% pediatric dental - but we're a growing business, expanding into adult dental, GI, and ENT. That means real opportunity to broaden your scope and grow alongside the practice, not just fill shifts.
What You'll Be Doing

  • Office-based pediatric dental anesthesia
  • Healthy, low-acuity pediatric patients
  • Efficient, predictable workflows
  • One location per day
  • Support from experienced clinical and operational teams
This model is built to support excellent clinical care without burnout.
Why Physicians Choose AAC-PNW
  • Office-based, ambulatory-only anesthesia
  • Low-stress, efficient pediatric dental cases
  • Strong clinical and operational support
  • A growing practice with room to evolve into adult dental, GI, and ENT
Who This Is Ideal For
  • MD Anesthesiologist (pediatric fellowship not required)
  • Comfortable caring for pediatric dental patients
  • Active Oregon and/or Washington license, or willingness to obtain
  • Enjoys autonomy and flexible scheduling
  • Values quality of life alongside meaningful clinical work
  • Interested in growing with a practice - not just filling shifts

More Than a Job - A Better Way to Practice
If you're looking to be more than a number, more connected to your work, and part of a model that truly prioritizes both excellent medicine and real-life balance, AAC-PNW may be your next professional home.
Let's start a conversation. Email your CV to recruiting@aac-md.com or apply today. We can't wait to meet you!
