What is an anesthesia tech?

An Anesthesia Technician is part of the health care team on a surgical floor of a hospital or in an outpatient surgical center. An Anesthesia Tech works alongside Anesthesiologists and Anesthesiology Assistants to ensure the health and safety of surgical patients. A career in anesthesia technology requires excellent communication as well as problem-solving and computer skills. As an Anesthesia Tech, you play a vital role in ensuring the health of patients during surgical procedures. Your job duties include operating, maintaining, and repairing biomedical equipment. You are also responsible for making sure anesthesia equipment is calibrated and functional, monitoring doses of anesthesia medication, occasional lifting or turning of patients, and standing for long hours.

What are some common challenges faced by anesthesia techs during surgical procedures?

Anesthesia Techs often encounter challenges such as rapidly changing surgical schedules, managing multiple equipment setups, and responding to urgent requests from anesthesiologists. They need to maintain a high level of attention to detail to ensure all anesthesia equipment is functioning properly and ready for use, sometimes with little notice. Effective communication and the ability to stay calm under pressure are essential, as the role frequently involves assisting in emergency situations and adapting to the fast-paced environment of the operating room.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an anesthesia tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Anesthesia Tech, you need knowledge of anesthesia equipment, sterile techniques, and basic patient care, usually supported by a certificate or associate degree in anesthesia technology. Familiarity with anesthesia machines, patient monitoring devices, and inventory management systems is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and strong organizational skills help an anesthesia tech excel in high-pressure surgical environments. These skills ensure patient safety, efficient operating room workflows, and reliable support for anesthesiologists and surgical teams.

While both Anesthesia Techs and Surgical Technologists work in surgical settings, Anesthesia Techs focus on preparing anesthesia equipment and assisting anesthesia providers, whereas Surgical Technologists assist during the surgical procedure itself. Both roles require certifications like CPR and work closely within hospital operating rooms, but their specific responsibilities and training differ.

How many years does it take to be an anesthesia tech?

Becoming an anesthesia tech typically requires completing a post-secondary education program, such as a certificate or associate degree in anesthesia technology or a related field, which usually takes 1 to 2 years. Additionally, some states or employers may require certification, such as the Certified Anesthesia Technologist (Cer.A.T.) credential, which involves passing an exam after gaining relevant work experience or completing training programs.

How much do anesthesia techs get paid?

Anesthesia technicians typically earn a median annual salary of around $40,000 to $55,000, depending on experience, location, and certifications. They work in hospital settings assisting anesthesiologists with equipment and patient care, often requiring knowledge of anesthesia machines and patient monitoring tools.

Job description

Pediatric Interventional Radiologist โ€“ CHOC Childrenโ€™s Hospital

Location: Orange County, California

Due to continued growth in clinical volume, expansion of our multidisciplinary programs, and a deep institutional commitment to faculty well-being and sustainability, the Section of Pediatric Interventional Radiology at CHOC Childrenโ€™s Hospital is recruiting a full-time Pediatric Interventional Radiologist.

About the Practice

Our team performs over 3,000 image-guided pediatric interventions annually, with year-over-year growth exceeding 20%. We are the only dedicated pediatric IR program in Orange County and serve as a critical hub for patients across the region.

CHOC is unique in that Interventional Radiology is an independent departmentโ€”purpose-built and equipped with dedicated capital investment, not repurposed from other service lines. The department was developed specifically for pediatric IR and opened in 2025 with entirely new infrastructure and technology. This institutional design reflects CHOCโ€™s deep commitment to the long-term success and autonomy of the IR service line, enabling strategic growth, programmatic development, and physician well-being.

The practice is now anchored by a new, purpose-designed IR department, located within the perioperative space, immediately adjacent to pre-op and post-op care areas. Pediatric anesthesiology is always available, ensuring seamless coordination and safety for both routine and complex cases.

Our facilities include:

  • Biplane and single-plane Philips Azurion suites with fully equipped, dedicated ultrasound units in each room.
  • Embedded reading rooms and back-office support for integrated longitudinal care.
  • Dedicated clinic space and staff provided in a new state-of-the-art on campus outpatient tower, ensuring a seamless patient and family experience from consult to intervention and follow-up.

We are supported by a multidisciplinary team that includes:

  • IR-dedicated APPs
  • Pediatric-trained anesthesiologists
  • A collaborative network of referring providers across CHOC's Centers of Excellence (e.g., Cancer, Neurosciences, and Heart Institutes)

Procedural Scope

We perform the full spectrum of pediatric interventional procedures, including:

  • Vascular access
  • Enteral and biliary interventions
  • Vascular malformation therapies
  • Embolization and angiography
  • DVT/PE thrombolysis
  • Craniofacial endovascular procedures
  • Image-guided musculoskeletal interventions

CHOC also supports a strong multidisciplinary Vascular Anomalies Center, where IR plays a foundational role in collaboration with hematology, plastics, dermatology, ENT, and genetics.

Academic & Institutional Environment

CHOC maintains strong academic affiliations with UC Irvine and supports teaching of residents, fellows, and medical students. Opportunities for research, innovation, and institutional leadership are abundant and encouraged. The IR section plays an active role in hospital-wide initiatives to improve value, patient experience, and faculty engagement.

What We Offer

  • A high-performing, mission-driven environment with strong IR leadership
  • Competitive compensation with productivity and growth incentives
  • Protected administrative and academic time
  • World-class location in the heart of Orange County, California, offering unmatched quality of life, schools, and recreation
