What is an Android engineer?

Android Engineers are software developers who specialize in designing, building, testing, and maintaining applications for devices running the Android operating system. They use programming languages like Java and Kotlin, as well as Android development tools, to create mobile apps that are user-friendly, secure, and efficient. Android Engineers often collaborate with designers, product managers, and other engineers to deliver high-quality mobile experiences. Their work involves not just coding, but also problem-solving, debugging, and optimizing app performance.

How does an Android engineer typically collaborate with designers and backend developers during the app development process?

Android Engineers frequently work closely with UX/UI designers to translate design mockups into functional, visually appealing interfaces, ensuring that user experience is seamless and meets platform guidelines. They also coordinate with backend developers to integrate APIs and manage data flow, often participating in regular stand-up meetings and code reviews to align on features and troubleshoot issues. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as successful app development relies on synchronizing efforts across different specialties within the team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Android engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Android Engineer, you need strong proficiency in Java and Kotlin, experience with Android SDK, and a solid understanding of mobile app architecture, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools like Android Studio, Git, and knowledge of RESTful APIs, as well as experience with testing frameworks, is highly valuable. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for excelling in this role. These skills ensure the development of high-quality, reliable Android applications that meet user needs and business goals.

Job description

At eBay, we're more than a global ecommerce leader - we're changing the way the world shops and sells. Our platform empowers millions of buyers and sellers in more than 190 markets around the world. We're committed to pushing boundaries and leaving our mark as we reinvent the future of ecommerce for enthusiasts.
Our customers are our compass, authenticity thrives, bold ideas are welcome, and everyone can bring their unique selves to work - every day. We're in this together, sustaining the future of our customers, our company, and our planet.
Join a team of passionate thinkers, innovators, and dreamers - and help us connect people and build communities to create economic opportunity for all.
This opening is with the Buyer Destination Team. We're focused on improving the experience of buying and selling specialty items on ebay, and work closely with our business team to identify niche markets, unusual features, partnerships, and emerging technologies to help our customers.
The Job
As an Android Engineer on the Buyer Destination Team, you should already have an established foundation in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, as well as fluency in Agile engineering practices and delivery.
We follow the Scrum framework and focus on continual improvement in our practices, driven from the ground up. We expect you to advocate for improvements in code and culture, and to support your colleagues in the same.
We enjoy TDD, pairing, code reviews, and other techniques to maintain high-quality code and resiliency as a team. Quality is more than just code coverage, and everyone is responsible for keeping the bar high.
We work with geographically dispersed teams, so excellent communication and remote collaboration skills are necessary for our projects to succeed.
Who are we looking for?
During our interviews, expect to discuss and demonstrate that you're able to meet these qualifications:
  • 7+ years of professional software development, working in teams with a mix of engineers and non-engineers.
  • 5+ years developing Android applications using Kotlin, preferably with a focus on e-commerce and service-driven architecture.
  • Strong experience building modern Android applications using JetpackCompose and familiarity with Android architecture components (MVVM/MVI), Coroutines, Flow, and dependency injection frameworks such as Hilt or Dagger.
  • Experience consuming RESTful APIs and building scalable, maintainable mobile applications.
  • Please provide links to any apps you've published on the Google Play Store or open-source projects you've contributed to-we're excited to see what you've built!
  • Evidence that you can deliver on challenging, long-term projects. A degree is great, but not necessary for most of the work we do. We'll happily consider equivalent professional experience.
  • Interest and enthusiasm about making eBay a better marketplace for everyone, everywhere.

What do we offer? When we take care of good people, we produce great products. When we hire people with diverse experiences, backgrounds, abilities, and talents, we're able to understand and better serve more buyers and sellers. eBay offers competitive salaries and benefits at all levels, including parental leave, flexible work hours, extensive health benefits and insurance. We are committed to accessibility, diversity, and inclusion -- for our employees and our customers.
