Are Android devs in demand?

Android developers are in high demand due to the widespread use of Android devices and the growth of mobile app development. Skills in Java, Kotlin, and familiarity with development tools like Android Studio increase employability in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Android Contract Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Android Contract Developer, you need strong proficiency in Java and Kotlin programming, solid understanding of Android SDK, and experience with app development lifecycles, typically backed by a relevant degree or extensive project portfolio. Familiarity with tools like Android Studio, Git, RESTful APIs, and possibly certifications such as Associate Android Developer are often expected. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and communication skills help you efficiently deliver projects and collaborate with clients or teams. These skills ensure high-quality, maintainable apps and successful project outcomes within tight deadlines.

What are some common challenges faced when working as an Android developer on a contract basis, and how can they be managed?

As a contract Android developer, you may encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to different codebases, aligning with varying client expectations, and managing tight project deadlines. Building strong communication skills and proactively clarifying requirements can help smooth collaboration with permanent team members. Additionally, familiarizing yourself with common development tools and documentation practices used across the industry will help you ramp up efficiently and deliver value from the start.

What are Android contractors?

Android contractors are professionals who are hired on a temporary basis to develop, maintain, or enhance Android applications for businesses. Unlike full-time employees, they usually work on specific projects or for a set period of time, providing expertise in Android app development. Android contractors may work independently or through staffing agencies, and they often bring specialized skills to help companies meet deadlines or address specific technical challenges. Their responsibilities can include writing code, fixing bugs, implementing new features, and ensuring apps meet quality standards.

This position will operate on a remote, freelance basis.
Android Police is expanding its freelance roster and hiring multiple experienced features writers to deliver sharp, authoritative stories across the Android universe. โ€ข Amazon Fire tablets, Fire TV, and Kindle lineup
โ€ข E Ink hardware (e-readers, note-takers, displays)
โ€ข Android OS updates, features, and hidden tricks
โ€ข Productivity apps and workflows
The Role
โ€ข Hands-on writing: Freelance contract with a minimum set of published stories per month.
โ€ข Pitch-driven: You own your ideas. Submit strong pitches weekly.
โ€ข Quick-response availability: Pitch and file same-day or next-day pieces on breaking news, OS drops, or viral trends.
โ€ข No commerce, affiliate, or sponsored content-100% editorial.
โ€ข Mix of formats: A healthy chunk of first-person pieces, plus reported features, how-tos, and analysis.
Requirements
โ€ข Proven experience: 3+ years writing features for established tech/consumer outlets (prior bylines required).
โ€ข Deep knowledge of at least one beat above; bonus for multiple.
โ€ข Hardware on hand: Current Android devices (Android 14+) and any smart home/E Ink gear you'll cover.
โ€ข US or Canada-based preferred. We'll consider exceptional writers elsewhere if you can reliably work within an Eastern time zone.
โ€ข Passion for your beat and a drive to deliver fresh, original takes.
Big Plusses
โ€ข Solid media contacts for exclusives and sourcing
โ€ข Bylines at outlets like Android Authority, 9to5Google, 9to5Mac, XDA, Pocket-lint, How-To Geek, or similar
โ€ข Strong social-media presence and engaged following
โ€ข Familiarity with Android Police's voice and audience
How We Work
โ€ข Payment: Timely bi-monthly or monthly payments via PayPal, or Payoneer. Competitive per-story rates, paid on publication.
โ€ข Process: Every piece goes through professional copy edit; we create custom art; your work is promoted across our social channels and newsletters.
โ€ข Quality bar: Excellent, well-sourced writing (we fact-check everything).
โ€ข Long-term home: Most writers stay for years. We run training workshops, offer growth paths to fixed base roles, product-review gigs, and more.
Application Requirements
  1. Three relevant previously written articles (at least one hands-on)
  2. Brief note on your primary beat + hardware setup
  3. Fresh pitch idea tailored to Android Police
  4. Links to your social profiles / portfolio

We will get back to you as soon as possible if we think you'd make a solid addition to the team.
