What is an android contractor?

Android contractors are professionals who are hired on a temporary basis to develop, maintain, or enhance Android applications for businesses. Unlike full-time employees, they usually work on specific projects or for a set period of time, providing expertise in Android app development. Android contractors may work independently or through staffing agencies, and they often bring specialized skills to help companies meet deadlines or address specific technical challenges. Their responsibilities can include writing code, fixing bugs, implementing new features, and ensuring apps meet quality standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an android contract developer?

To thrive as an Android Contract Developer, you need strong proficiency in Java and Kotlin programming, solid understanding of Android SDK, and experience with app development lifecycles, typically backed by a relevant degree or extensive project portfolio. Familiarity with tools like Android Studio, Git, RESTful APIs, and possibly certifications such as Associate Android Developer are often expected. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and communication skills help you efficiently deliver projects and collaborate with clients or teams. These skills ensure high-quality, maintainable apps and successful project outcomes within tight deadlines.

What are some common challenges faced when working as an android developer on a contract basis, and how can they be managed?

As a contract Android developer, you may encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to different codebases, aligning with varying client expectations, and managing tight project deadlines. Building strong communication skills and proactively clarifying requirements can help smooth collaboration with permanent team members. Additionally, familiarizing yourself with common development tools and documentation practices used across the industry will help you ramp up efficiently and deliver value from the start.

Job description

As one of the first pioneers of earned wage access, our passion at EarnIn is building products that deliver real-time financial flexibility for those with the unique needs of living paycheck to paycheck. Our community members access their earnings as they earn them, with options to spend, save, and grow their money without mandatory fees, interest rates, or credit checks.

We’re fortunate to have an incredibly experienced leadership team, combined with world-class funding partners like A16Z, Matrix Partners, DST, Ribbit Capital, and a very healthy core business with a tremendous runway. We’re growing fast and are excited to continue bringing world-class talent onboard to help shape the next chapter of our growth journey.

POSITION SUMMARY

We’re looking for a passionate Android Engineer to join the Live Pay team at EarnIn. In this role, you’ll build and polish features in our flagship Android app—the primary way many customers experience our product. You’ll collaborate closely with teammates across engineering, product, and design to ship high-quality, user-centered experiences and contribute to the health of our mobile codebase. This position will be hybrid from our Vancouver, BC office, as part of our expanding site, although remote work can also be considered. EarnIn offers excellent benefits, including healthcare, internet and cell phone reimbursement, a learning and development stipend, and potential opportunities to travel to our headquarters in Mountain View. The Canada-based salary range for this role is $169,830 to $207,570, plus equity and benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Build, ship, and maintain Android product features that improve the customer experience.
  • Contribute to mobile architecture and platform improvements by implementing components using established patterns and participating in technical discussions.
  • Work with backend engineers to integrate performant, reliable APIs; provide feedback on API design and contract changes.
  • Partner with Product and UX to deliver thoughtful, accessible, and polished user interfaces.
  • Uphold engineering best practices through code reviews, readable code, and maintainable abstractions.
  • Own execution for well-scoped projects: break down tasks, surface risks early, and deliver incrementally.
  • Write unit and UI tests; help keep CI/CD pipelines green and releases stable.
  • Use analytics and experimentation (e.g., A/B tests, metrics) to evaluate the impact of features and iterate.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Proficiency in Kotlin and modern Android development, including Coroutines/Flow (RxJava experience is a plus).
  • Practical experience with Android app architectures (e.g., MVVM, MVI, MVP, Clean Architecture) and Jetpack components.
  • Solid understanding of Android UI—XML layouts and Jetpack Compose—and how to build responsive, accessible, and performant screens.
  • Working knowledge of software engineering best practices across the SDLC: coding standards, code reviews, Git workflows, CI/CD, automated testing, and mobile release operations.
  • 3+ years of industry experience building, shipping, and maintaining Android applications at scale.
  • Interest in or exposure to security/privacy considerations in consumer apps; fintech experience is a plus.
  • Nice-to-have: familiarity with iOS or cross-platform frameworks (React Native, Kotlin Multiplatform).

At EarnIn, we believe that the best way to build a financial system that works for everyday people is by hiring a team that represents our diverse community. Our team is diverse not only in background and experience but also in perspective. We celebrate our diversity and strive to create a culture of belonging.
