What is an Android AOSP engineer?

Android AOSP Engineers are specialized software engineers who work with the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) to develop, customize, and optimize the Android operating system for various devices. They are responsible for modifying the Android source code, integrating new features, fixing bugs, and ensuring compatibility with device hardware. These engineers often collaborate with hardware manufacturers and other developers to create custom Android builds for smartphones, tablets, or other embedded devices.

What are some common challenges faced when developing and maintaining custom Android AOSP builds?

Android AOSP Engineers often encounter challenges related to hardware compatibility, integrating vendor-specific drivers, and keeping custom builds up-to-date with Google's frequent Android releases. Debugging device-specific issues can require deep collaboration with hardware teams and thorough testing across multiple device variants. Additionally, managing security patches and ensuring a reliable over-the-air (OTA) update process requires strong coordination with DevOps and QA teams. These challenges make strong problem-solving skills and cross-functional communication essential for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Android AOSP engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Android AOSP Engineer, you need strong proficiency in Java, C/C++, and a deep understanding of the Android operating system, along with a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, Android Studio, AOSP build tools, and debugging frameworks is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial for developing, customizing, and maintaining robust Android system-level features while collaborating efficiently with cross-functional teams.

What is the difference between Android Aosp Engineer vs Android Developer?

Job description

  • Location: Dearborn, Michigan

  • Job #105055

Android Full-Stack Engineer (AOSP / Android Framework)
Hybrid - 4 Days Onsite Per Week
Bachelor's Degree Required | Master's Preferred
Are you passionate about solving the toughest Android platform challenges? We are seeking an experienced Android Full-Stack Engineer with deep expertise in Android Framework, AOSP, middleware, and platform stability to join a high-impact engineering team.
This role is focused on the Android platform itself, not Android application development. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience working across the Android stack, including framework internals, native services, vendor layers, and system-level debugging.
What You'll Do
  • Design and develop Android middleware and background services that support platform-level functionality.
  • Debug and resolve complex Android stability and performance issues across framework, native, and vendor layers.
  • Analyze and modify Android Open Source Project (AOSP) source code.
  • Troubleshoot system_server components including Activity Manager, Window Manager, Package Manager, and Car Service.
  • Investigate and resolve boot failures, black screen issues, ANRs, crashes, and platform reliability concerns.
  • Perform root-cause analysis on difficult, ambiguous, and hard-to-reproduce issues.
  • Support Android OS upgrades, integrations, and platform migrations.
  • Resolve CTS, VTS, ATS, and STS compliance issues.
  • Work closely with cross-functional engineering teams to ensure platform robustness and long-term stability.

Required Qualifications
  • 3+ years of Android Platform or Android Framework development experience.
  • Strong experience with Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
  • Hands-on experience developing Android middleware and background/system services.
  • Strong programming skills in:
    • Kotlin
    • Java
    • C++
  • Experience working with Binder/AIDL interfaces.
  • Ability to debug and modify Android Framework and system_server components.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex platform-level issues across the Android stack.
  • Proven ability to perform deep technical investigations and root-cause analysis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Android Automotive OS (AAOS) experience.
  • Experience with Car Service and automotive platforms.
  • Knowledge of HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) and vendor integration.
  • Familiarity with SurfaceFlinger and Android graphics/display subsystems.
  • Experience with CTS, VTS, ATS, and STS compliance testing.
  • Experience using Logcat, Perfetto, Systrace, GDB, and LLDB.
  • Familiarity with Android build systems (Soong/Make).
  • Experience supporting Android platform bring-up and working with SoC/silicon vendors.

Important: What We're NOT Looking For
This is not an Android app development position.
Candidates whose experience is primarily focused on the following are unlikely to be a fit:
  • Android application development
  • Mobile UI development
  • Android SDK/API development
  • Jetpack Compose development
  • App-focused Kotlin/Java development
  • Front-end Android engineering
  • Application-level debugging without Android Framework or AOSP experience

Ideal Candidate
You are a highly technical Android engineer who enjoys investigating and solving complex platform problems that others cannot. You are comfortable working deep within Android Framework internals, can navigate AOSP source code confidently, and serve as a technical resource for challenging platform stability issues.
Automotive, embedded Android, and Android Automotive OS experience are highly desirable.
