Job description

Analytics Engineer
Department: Sales & Marketing
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Washington, DC
Compensation: $120,000 - $130,000 / year
Description
About The Bulwark
We're building one of the most engaged communities in American media.
The Bulwark exists to help readers, listeners, and viewers make sense of a rapidly changing world through sharp analysis, independent thinking, and compelling journalism. More than one million subscribers have joined that mission, creating a community that actively engages with our work across newsletters, podcasts, video, live events, and membership experiences.
That community has helped us build something increasingly rare in media: a profitable, independent, and growing business supported directly by its audience. While many media companies are focused on proving a model, we've built one with significant room to scale.
We're now focused on what comes next: accelerating consumer revenue growth, launching new products and experiences, sharpening our messaging and marketing, and understanding our audience and business more deeply than ever. That's where this role comes in, we're seeking The Bulwark's first Analytics Engineer to establish the analytics foundation that powers decision-making across the business.
About the Role
As The Bulwark's first Analytics Engineer, you'll build the foundation for how we use data across the company. This is a rare opportunity to build an analytics function at the intersection of data engineering, analytics, and business strategy, ideal for someone who enjoys building data infrastructure as much as uncovering the insights that drive business decisions.
You'll connect data across subscriptions, newsletters, podcasts, video, live events, marketing, finance, and audience platforms to create trusted reporting, shared metrics, and a unified view of the business. From building pipelines and data models to creating dashboards and answering strategic questions, your work will directly influence how we grow subscribers, launch products, invest in marketing, and make decisions across the company.
We're looking for someone who's energized by building from the ground up, thrives in entrepreneurial environments, and wants to shape the future of analytics at one of the fastest-growing independent media companies in the country.
What You'll Do
Build The Bulwark's analytics function
  • Establish the foundations, metrics, and reporting standards that will shape how the company uses data as we continue to grow.
  • Establish best practices for analytics, documentation, and data governance that enable our analytics capabilities to scale alongside the business.
  • Build and maintain integrations between Snowflake and third-party platforms to ensure reliable, scalable access to business data.

Build and maintain our data foundations
  • Audit existing data sources and ingestion pathways across Snowflake, Substack, web/app analytics, financial systems, and marketing platforms.
  • Design and maintain a source-of-truth schema spanning subscriber, engagement, revenue, and product data.
  • Build and refine ingestion and transformation pipelines using Snowflake SQL (and adjacent tooling).

Deliver analysis that drives decisions
  • Partner with Growth, Finance, Editorial, and external platform partners to answer the company's highest-priority business questions.
  • Analyze subscriber acquisition, retention, churn, engagement, and lifetime value to identify opportunities for consumer revenue growth.
  • Design measurement frameworks and analytics to support pricing strategy, promotional campaigns, subscription offers, and experimentation.
  • Build the reporting and data architecture needed to evaluate A/B tests, pricing changes, and new growth initiatives.
  • Measure the effectiveness of marketing campaigns, promotional offers, lifecycle programs, and acquisition channels.
  • Develop dashboards and executive reporting that provide timely visibility into business performance and key growth metrics.
  • Perform ad hoc analyses that uncover opportunities to improve revenue, engagement, and operational efficiency.
  • Develop scalable audience and content taxonomies that improve targeting, personalization, reporting, and subscriber experiences across our products.

About You
You Bring:
  • 6+ years of hands-on experience across analytics engineering, data engineering, or analytics, ideally within subscription media, digital media, or B2C businesses.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience working with Snowflake.
  • Experience with modern ELT tools such as dbt, Fivetran, or equivalent technologies.
  • Experience building dashboards and self-service reporting in Metabase or similar BI platforms.
  • Experience designing subscriber attribution, cohort analyses, and LTV, retention, or churn models.
  • Experience supporting consumer revenue growth through pricing, experimentation, lifecycle marketing, or subscription optimization.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage AI tools to automate analytics workflows, accelerate insight generation, and improve the efficiency and quality of reporting and decision-making.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A builder's mindset, an entrepreneurial spirit, and excitement about establishing the analytics foundation for a fast-growing business.

What We Offer
We want people at The Bulwark to thrive. We provide:
  • Full employer-sponsored health plans
  • 401(k) plan with employer match
  • Generous vacation and paid time off
  • Commuter benefits and Employee Assistance Program

This role is based in Washington, DC, where our team works together in person five days a week. We're mission-driven, collaborative, and direct-and we value people who bring ideas and energy to the table.
Interested? We'd love to hear from you. Submit your resume and a brief cover note.
