What are some common challenges faced by Analog Sigma Delta engineers in designing high-resolution data converters?

Analog Sigma Delta engineers often encounter challenges related to minimizing noise and distortion to achieve high resolution and accuracy in data converters. Managing the trade-offs between power consumption, speed, and area while ensuring robust performance across process, voltage, and temperature variations is essential. Additionally, close collaboration with digital design, layout, and verification teams is required to optimize overall system performance and meet stringent specifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Analog Sigma Delta Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as an Analog Sigma Delta Design Engineer, you need a solid background in analog circuit design, signal processing, and semiconductor physics, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with EDA tools such as Cadence, SPICE simulators, and MATLAB, as well as familiarity with sigma-delta modulation architectures, is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and troubleshooting complex designs. These competencies enable the creation of high-performance, reliable analog-to-digital converters critical for modern electronics.

What is an Analog Sigma Delta (ΣΔ) engineer?

An Analog Sigma Delta (ΣΔ) engineer is a professional who specializes in designing and developing sigma-delta analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters (ADCs and DACs). These engineers work on circuits that use oversampling and noise-shaping techniques to achieve high resolution and accuracy in converting analog signals to digital data and vice versa. Their expertise is crucial in applications such as audio processing, instrumentation, and communication systems, where precise signal conversion is required. They typically work with mixed-signal integrated circuits and collaborate closely with digital and system engineers.

Our dedication to supplying quality products, on-time delivery, and superior support, has contributed to the success of our customers and the critical missions they serve.
This position is 100% onsite at our Bohemia, NY location.
The compensation for this role is $120,000 - $160,000 annually based on experience.
This position requires a U.S Person or a person who can qualify for a Department of State or Department of Commerce License.
Position Summary:
To continue to meet our customer's mission critical needs, PDC is seeking an Analog/Mixed Signal Design Engineer to join our dynamic, growing organization as a valued member of our team. The candidate needs experience in developing devices with active / passive signal converter & conditioning circuits and switching power control / driver circuits; designs are implemented either as a multi-chip & wire hermetically-sealed hybrids, or as SMT Circuit Card Assemblies (CCA's).
Responsibilities:
  • Key role: Take primary technical leadership in the design and support of our Synchro / Resolver to Digital, DATEL A2D & D2A mixed signal converter product lines, and our switched-mode multi-phase Brushless DC Motor (BLDC) driver & controller product lines. This requires a deep understanding of analog / mixed signal analysis and design techniques to ensure device specifications are met with robust margin. You will guide an interdisciplinary Engineering team through the phases of product life cycle development from requirements, architecture, & detailed design, through to device verification, qualification, and manage the transition to production. Our legacy models require continuous obsolescence review and at times may need redesign to support our mil- aero customer base.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; Graduate Engineering degree a plus.
  • 7+ minimum years of experience
  • Deep bench of Analog Circuit design experience in multiple A to D architectures (multiple pass SAR, Flash, Sigma Delta, Pipeline) and D to A (serial DACs, R2R, current steering, charge scaling). Experience should cover low noise and high dynamic range techniques, sample acquisition and hold circuits, Bandgap reference, Oscillators, Op-amps, Switched Capacitor Circuits, Active Filters, single ended & differential circuits, phase / frequency control loops and stability analysis.
