What is an AMD software engineer?

AMD Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and optimize software that works with AMD hardware products, such as CPUs and GPUs. They work on drivers, firmware, software development kits (SDKs), and tools that enable developers and end-users to get the best performance from AMD products. Their work often involves low-level programming, performance tuning, and collaborating closely with hardware engineers to ensure seamless integration between hardware and software. Key areas include graphics drivers, machine learning frameworks, and gaming technologies.

How does an AMD software engineer typically collaborate with hardware teams during the development process?

As an AMD Software Engineer, you will often work closely with hardware engineers to ensure seamless integration between software and hardware components. This collaboration may involve reviewing hardware specifications, participating in joint debugging sessions, and providing feedback on hardware-software interfaces. Regular cross-functional meetings and documentation reviews are common to align both teams, resolve compatibility issues, and optimize performance. This collaborative environment enhances your problem-solving skills and broadens your understanding of both hardware and software domains.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AMD software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AMD Software Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, programming languages like C/C++ and Python, and an understanding of computer architecture, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with AMD-specific tools, graphics APIs such as DirectX and Vulkan, and GPU driver development are typically required, along with experience in version control systems like Git. Analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills that help address complex technical challenges and collaborate on large-scale projects. These skills ensure efficient development and optimization of AMD software products, contributing to robust performance and innovation in the competitive semiconductor industry.

What is the difference between Amd Software Engineer vs Amd Firmware Engineer?

AspectAmd Software EngineerAmd Firmware Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related field; programming skills in C++, PythonBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering; experience with embedded systems
Work EnvironmentDevelops software applications, tools, and systems for AMD productsDesigns and tests firmware for hardware components like CPUs and GPUs
Industry UsageCommonly employed in software development teams within AMD and tech companiesTypically found in hardware and embedded systems teams at AMD and manufacturing firms

While both roles require technical expertise and collaboration within AMD, the Software Engineer focuses on developing software applications, whereas the Firmware Engineer specializes in creating low-level firmware for hardware components. Understanding these differences helps candidates target their skills and career goals effectively.

Job description

We're looking for a Hardware Engineer to join our Hardware team in Granada, Spain.

Our Technology:

We're the world leader in Resilient Positioning, Navigation and Timing (R-PNT) solutions that improve the reliability, performance and safety of critical applications,
and high-risk operations, even in GPS/GNSS denied environments. We provide virtually fail-safe GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) and PNT (Positioning, Navigation and Timing) solutions for military and commercial applications worldwide.

The position:

We are looking for a Hardware Engineer who is highly motivated to work with a talented and diverse engineering team to address hardware design and system integration with software and testing to deliver end customer products. As a Hardware Design Engineer, you will be an integral member of the Hardware Engineering team designing custom boards from scratch. These boards will include high-end FPGAs, SoCs, memories, DACs, ADCs, high-speed interfaces (PCIe, 10G ethernet ...), being used in high-performance and critical applications within scientific facilities such as particle accelerators. The ideal candidate for this role is someone who is able to work proactively and closely with other cross-functional engineering groups such as industrial design, product design, production test, FPGA and software engineering.

What you'll be doing:

  • Work with a friendly and positive team to design new high-performance electronic equipment (schematic capture and PCB layout) and sustain/support existing products.
  • Test prototype designs to guarantee they meet requirements, identifying potential issues before they reach production.
  • Collaborate with Software, FPGA, and Mechanical Engineers to ensure the hardware works for its intended purpose.
  • Provide technical support to the Production team and ensure compliance to time frame, quality and cost targets.
  • Coordinate with product development teams to perform Design for Testability (DFT) on design cycle.
  • Collaborate with contract manufacturer partners to ensure timely supply of systems and devices in accordance with the specifications.
  • You will use your critical thinking and problem-solving skills to ensure the highest quality for the results in accordance with the allotted schedule, effort, and budget.
  • You will work on international projects for scientific facilities as well as the latest and greatest in Resilient PNT and deterministic technologies!

What You Bring To Our Team:

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering.
  • Experience with schematics capture and PCB layout using Altium Designer.
  • Experience with components selection for new designs.
  • Design and routing of low speed serial communications as RS422, RS232, SPI, I2C, CAN...
  • Familiarity with low noise power supply circuits (DC-DC and linear regulators).
  • Knowledge of AMD-Xilinx FPGAs and SoCs.
  • Testing and troubleshooting experience using basic equipment such as network analyzers, spectrum analyzers and oscilloscopes.
  • Minimal experience required: 2 years.
  • Good written and communication skills in English.

Desirable skills. The company will positively consider knowledge and experience working with:

  • High speed and low noise PCB layout:
  • Stack-up design.
  • Impedance calculations and routing rules definition.
