Job description

The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center (AMC) in New York City invites applications for a full-time Veterinary Dermatologist to help develop and grow our Dermatology services as part of a collaborative, mission-driven, nonprofit veterinary teaching hospital. The successful candidate will provide advanced specialty care, teach and mentor house officers and rotating trainees, and work closely with other specialty and emergency teams to deliver exceptional, compassionate care for animals and the people who love them.

This role is designed for a board-certified or board-eligible dermatologist who thrives in a high-caseload, specialty-referral environment and values teaching and service. Position structure will be tailored to the candidate's experience and interests and may include a clinician-educator focus and participation in outcomes-driven clinical research and scholarly activity. The clinical position will be structured as an independent veterinary dermatology service that reports directly to the Chief Medical Officer.

Key ResponsibilitiesTeaching Duties
  • Provide clinical teaching to rotating interns, residents, and other trainees within the Dermatology and Otology Service, integrated with case management and client communication.
  • Participate in didactic teaching as assigned, including hospital rounds, resident seminars, and continuing education activities.
  • Mentor house officers in clinical reasoning, procedural skills (including otic diagnostics/therapeutics), professionalism, and effective communication.
Clinical Service and Outreach Duties
  • Deliver comprehensive specialty care for dermatologic and otic disease, including outpatient evaluation, diagnostic planning, medical and procedural management, and inpatient consultation as needed.
  • Provide outstanding client service in a high-acuity referral setting, including timely updates, shared decision-making, and clear written instructions.
  • Communicate effectively with referring veterinarians through consult reports, direct outreach, and collegial collaboration.
  • Partner with colleagues across specialties (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, oncology, emergency/critical care, diagnostic imaging) to coordinate complex case care.
  • Participate in community and professional outreach consistent with AMC's nonprofit mission, including educational events and public-facing initiatives as appropriate.
Research and Scholarly Duties

AMC supports outcomes-driven clinical research and scholarship that advances patient care and education.

  • Develop and/or participate in clinical research projects, case series, and quality improvement initiatives; disseminate findings through presentations and peer-reviewed publication.
  • Contribute to resident and intern scholarly work (e.g., mentorship on study design, abstracts, manuscripts).
  • Collaborate with clinical and research colleagues across AMC to support translational and educational innovation when relevant.

Education and Experience RequirementsRequired
  • DVM or equivalent degree.
  • Completion of an ACVD, ECVD, or AiCVD-approved residency in dermatology; board-certified or board-eligible.

  • Demonstrated excellence in patient care, client communication, and collaboration in a specialty referral setting.
  • Commitment to teaching and mentoring in a veterinary training environment.
Preferred
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in program/service development and building referral relationships.
  • Track record of clinical scholarship (e.g., publications, presentations, clinical trials, outcomes research) and/or an advanced degree or equivalent research experience.
  • Experience teaching and mentoring interns/residents and contributing to continuing education.
  • Interest in advanced otology diagnostics and procedures (e.g., video-otoscopy) and multidisciplinary management of complex ear disease.
