Job description

Bastrop County Emergency Services District #3 (BCESD#) is seeking a full-time Lead Paramedic. Bastrop County ESD #3 is assuming direct provision of EMS service in Bastrop County to over 110,000 residents across approximately 900 square miles. Bastrop County is a rapidly growing suburban/rural county located just east of Austin/Travis County Texas.
The Lead Paramedic (LP) is the paramedic in charge of patient care during assigned shifts and maintains the highest level of credentialing. The LP performs a wide variety of clinical interventions, tasks, and functions, applying professional skills and knowledge in the emergency response, scene assessment, patient assessment, prioritizing and organizing patient care interventions, coordinating emergency scenes and working closely with area first responders.
Essential Functions
The following duties are intended to serve as a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities of the position. The incumbent may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional duties not included in this description.
The desired candidate will have a demonstrated history in emergency medical services in a clinically current, primary 911 system with a broad variety of clinical situations. Specific attributes include, but are not limited to:
  • Respond promptly to emergency calls and provide medical assistance at the scene.
  • Adhere to, promote, and educate others about safety and infection control policies.
  • Assess patient condition and determine appropriate treatment.
  • Lead and direct others involved in patient assessment and care.
  • Assume the lead role in patient care scenarios.
  • Administer emergency medical care including CPR, defibrillation, wound care, and medication.
  • Safely transport patients to medical facilities while monitoring clinical condition.
  • Communicate professionally, effectively, and respectfully with dispatch, hospital staff, and other emergency personnel.
  • Maintain accurate and timely patient care reports and documentation.
  • Inspect and maintain ambulance equipment and supplies.
  • Always be clean and professional in uniform while on-duty.
  • Advocate for patients in need of assistance.
  • Create as safe an environment as possible for patients, responders, and bystanders.
  • Adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations and protocols.
Minimum Qualifications/ Requirements
Required
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Current Texas Paramedic certification/licensure
  • Current valid Class C State of Texas Driver License or ability to obtain
  • One (1) year of paramedic experience in emergency medical services or patient care delivery in an emergency department or specialty care facility at the paramedic level in a primary 911 role or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of experience in emergency medical services or patient care delivery in an emergency department or specialty care facility at the EMT level or higher.
  • Must be able to complete Bastrop ESD #3 provisional credentialing within 2 weeks of employment and full clinical credentialing within 3 months of employment.
Preference may be given to the following qualifications/experience
  • Documentation of completion of a two (2) or four (4) year degree program (preferred) in emergency medical services, emergency management administration, or related field.
  • Two or more years of paramedic experience in emergency medical services or patient care delivery in an emergency department or specialty care facility at the paramedic level in a primary 911 role or equivalent.
  • Four (4) or more years of experience in emergency medical services in a primary 911, nursing, or in a related field.
  • Previous specialty operations, emergency management deployment or tactical medical programs experience.
  • Critical care certification or equivalent critical care experience.
  • Registered Nurse with critical care or emergency room experience
  • Nationally recognized cardiac, trauma, pediatric or medical life support certification, or equivalent local credential(s)
  • NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800
The position requires proficiency in:
  • Business English, spelling, punctuation and mathematics.
  • Ability to supervise and coach personnel and effectively work in a team.
  • Medical recordkeeping.
  • Preparation of reports.
  • Effective written and oral communication.
  • Ability to operate radio communications equipment.

  • Ability to read, understand, and follow clinical guidelines.
  • Ability to work well with others and have a positive leadership attitude and interact with the public in a respectful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to maintain timely attendance and work extended hours when required.
  • Ability to manage complex medical situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse socio-economic and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to assess situations and determine priorities with minimal direction or supervision.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in person, via radio, video, or using messaging tools.
  • Must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking the English language fluently. Strong skills in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure are essential for accurate and effective medical documentation.

Visual and fine/gross motor skills is required enabling the use of medical equipment, conducting medical assessments, and administering medical interventions such as administering medications and performing procedures like intubation or IV insertion.

Must be available to work 24-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays. Duties will be performed in a variety of settings, including EMS stations, designated post locations, ambulances, and both indoor and outdoor environments. Work may occasionally involve exposure to harsh weather conditions and physically demanding situations at emergency scenes or other assignments. Exposure includes potentially hazardous materials such as bodily fluids, blood, and infectious diseases.
Other Requirements
Must pass the Bastrop County Emergency Services District #3 suitability examination, drug and alcohol testing, background investigation, and possess no felony convictions, no misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude or pattern of misdemeanor convictions; no pending misdemeanor or felony charges; no use of illegal drugs in the past ten years; and never sold illegal drugs.
