Job description

Are you ready to lead safety infrastructure for Amazon's first self-performing material handling equipment integration program? As Principal Risk Manager for One MHS Integration & Deployment within the Workplace, Health & Safety organization, you'll build and operationalize the complete safety program that enables Amazon to safely execute MHE installations across its fulfillment network. You will do this by partnering with WHS Construction Safety, ONE MHS I&D Leadership, GES Construction, and third-party labor providers to ensure every site has the policies, training, and compliance systems required to protect workers from day one.
You will own the entire safety infrastructure for ONE MHS Integration & Deployment - every policy, procedure, training standard, compliance framework, and operational safety system - with increased scale year over year. You will do this by designing and authoring the complete ONE MHS safety policy framework, building course training curriculum across multiple role types, managing the Go/No-Go readiness process, and driving a five-tier safety metrics framework that spans lagging indicators through cultural benchmarking. You will analyze safety performance data across simultaneous project sites and present strategic recommendations to senior leadership including Directors and VPs.
Drive Prevention through Design at scale: You will establish the ONE MHS safety policy architecture from scratch - bridging Amazon's existing WHS operational policies, WHS Construction Safety standards (SSC V3/V4), and the unique requirements of an internal MHE integrator performing construction-adjacent work in operational facilities. You will author procedures across policy areas including electrical safety (NFPA 70E), fall protection, LOTO/control of hazardous energy, confined space entry, rigging and lifting, hot work, PIT/MEWP operations, and scaffolding. Your objective: build the infrastructure that makes self-performing integration safe before operations begin.
Influence cross-functional stakeholders at all levels: You will build trust across WHS Construction Safety, WHS RME, WHS FEC, ONE MHS I&D Leadership, GES Construction, and third-party providers by communicating complex technical requirements clearly and effectively. Your ability to earn credibility across organizations with competing priorities - speed, standards, and operational handoff - will embed safety into every phase of the ONE MHS program.
Build and Scale: You will design the system, stand it up, prove it works, and scale it across the network - all while the work is happening around you. You will manage the transition from consulting support to fully internal capability, develop the distributed safety leadership model, and continuously refine policies and training based on field feedback, incident data, and evolving Amazon standards.
This role requires travel of 40-60% to conduct site visits, lead Go/No-Go readiness assessments, and oversee safety program execution across multiple simultaneous facility launches. You are building Amazon's first internal MHE integrator safety program.
Key job responsibilities
Safety Policy & Procedure Architecture
• Design, author, and implement the complete ONE MHS safety policy framework across all policy areas including electrical safety (NFPA 70E), fall protection, LOTO, confined space, hot work, rigging and lifting, PIT/MEWP operations, and scaffolding
• Author the ONE MHS Safety Code of Conduct, site mobilization safety checklist, pre-task planning procedures, and Go/No-Go readiness criteria
• Develop the ONE MHS incident investigation protocol defining escalation paths, root cause analysis methodology, and corrective action tracking
• Bridge Amazon's existing WHS operational policies and SSC V3/V4 Construction Safety standards with the unique requirements of internal MHE integration work
Training & Competency System
• Own the end-to-end training curriculum for all ONE MHS role types covering courses across general safety, energy/electrical, work at heights, equipment operations, and emergency response
• Build the training tracking and compliance system ensuring 100% completion verification before any personnel access any site
• Establish competency verification processes for high-risk activities - not just course completion, but demonstrated proficiency
• Manage the upstream training interface with third-party labor providers, defining pre-arrival requirements and on-site delivery in coordination with site WHS teams
Compliance & Governance
• Own SSC V3/V4 compliance for all ONE MHS projects - ensuring every site, every shift, and every activity meets Amazon Special Safety Conditions
• Manage the Go/No-Go process for ONE MHS sites - developing criteria, conducting readiness assessments, and making recommendations to WHS Construction Safety
• Build the internal and third-party safety audit program including scheduled and unannounced inspections, finding classification, corrective action tracking, and closure verification
• Design and implement the ONE MHS five-tier safety metrics framework spanning lagging indicators, process indicators, leading indicators, cultural indicators, and industry benchmarking
• Establish reporting cadence from daily incident reports through quarterly executive summaries to VP WHS and annual comprehensive program reviews
Third-Party & Contractor Safety Management
• Own the safety interface with third-party QA Site Safety Manager providers - selection criteria, performance standards, contract requirements, and ongoing performance management
• Manage third-party labor provider safety partnerships including upstream training requirements, on-site safety verification, and escalation protocols
• Oversee consulting engagement deliverables and manage transition to fully internal capability

- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
- 10+ years of progressive experience in occupational safety, construction safety, or safety program management in industrial, manufacturing, or construction environments
- 5+ years of experience building safety programs from the ground up - designing policy frameworks, training systems, and compliance structures where none previously existed
- Direct experience with high-risk construction or industrial activities: electrical work (NFPA 70E), work at heights/fall protection, LOTO/control of hazardous energy, confined space entry, rigging and lifting, and hot work
- Experience managing safety across multiple simultaneous project sites with both employee and contractor workforces
- Demonstrated ability to author safety policies and procedures that are operationally executable - tools that field teams actually use
- Experience with OSHA construction standards (29 CFR 1926), general industry standards (29 CFR 1910), and contractor safety management
