What are Amazon Owner Drivers?

Amazon Owner Drivers are independent contractors who use their own vehicles to deliver packages for Amazon. They typically partner with Amazon’s delivery programs, such as Amazon Flex, to pick up parcels from Amazon facilities and deliver them to customers. Owner Drivers have the flexibility to set their own schedules, but are responsible for their vehicle expenses, insurance, and meeting Amazon’s delivery standards. This role is ideal for individuals seeking flexible work hours and the ability to be their own boss. Compensation is generally based on the number of deliveries completed and routes covered.

What are some common challenges Amazon Owner Drivers face and how can they be addressed?

Amazon Owner Drivers often encounter challenges such as route optimization, time management, and vehicle maintenance. Navigating unfamiliar delivery areas and managing a high volume of packages within tight deadlines require strong organizational skills and adaptability. To succeed, many drivers use route planning apps, maintain open communication with dispatch teams, and schedule regular vehicle check-ups. Building good rapport with customers and consistently meeting delivery targets can also lead to more route opportunities and better reviews.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Amazon Owner Driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Amazon Owner Driver, you need a valid driver's license, safe driving record, and strong knowledge of local routes, often supported by commercial vehicle insurance and, in some regions, specific delivery certifications. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, route optimization apps, and Amazon's delivery management software is typically required. Excellent time management, customer service skills, and reliability help drivers stand out in this role. These skills ensure timely and accurate deliveries, high customer satisfaction, and compliance with Amazon’s operational standards.

Job description

Amazon's Global Engineering Services (GES) North America Design & Construction team is seeking a Construction Manager to serve as Amazon's owner's representative in the delivery of built facilities and infrastructure supporting our logistics network. In this role, you will manage the full construction lifecycle - from design review and contractor procurement through construction execution and operational handover - for new builds, retrofits, expansions, and program initiatives across your assigned region.
You will be the primary point of interface between Amazon and its external partners, including developers, general contractors, design engineers, and regulatory authorities, while serving as the key integrator between construction and the internal Amazon teams responsible for equipping, furnishing, and operating our facilities. Projects range from targeted renovations to large-scale new facility builds, including fulfillment centers, sortation centers, delivery stations, and auxiliary buildings.
This role requires strong technical construction expertise, sharp commercial acumen, and the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects independently. You will bring a disciplined approach to safety, budget management, schedule oversight, contract execution, and stakeholder communication - all in service of delivering world-class facilities for Amazon's customers.
This role requires 60% regional travel and availability to work from a corporate office when not traveling. Candidates should either live near or be willing to relocate within a reasonable commuting distance of the office. Relocation assistance may be provided.
Key job responsibilities
Serve as Amazon's owner's representative and primary construction integrator across all assigned projects
• Manage multiple concurrent projects from design phase through construction completion and operational handover
• Conduct detailed reviews of contractor bid packages, budgets, and schedules; identify and resolve discrepancies
• Own comprehensive budget tracking, cashflow forecasting, and cost management
• Negotiate construction, procurement, and labor contracts with developers and general contractors
• Audit contractor performance to ensure skills, competencies, and resources meet project requirements
• Coordinate with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for permitting, regulatory compliance, and approvals
• Review construction documents and ongoing work for conformance to Amazon's building specifications and design standards
• Identify and resolve design conflicts, schedule clashes, and coordination gaps across Amazon execution teams
• Coach and guide project teams - developers, design engineers, contractors, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders - throughout the project lifecycle
• Champion Amazon's safety programs and hold all project stakeholders accountable to a safety-first culture
• Maintain clear, concise, and transparent communication with all internal and external stakeholders
• Assess project performance through KPIs for safety, quality, cost, schedule, and sustainability
• Partner with teams responsible for facility transition, base building management, and turnover documentation
• Identify value engineering and design enhancement opportunities in collaboration with internal engineering partners
• Seek sustainable, environmentally responsible solutions throughout the construction process
A day in the life
Each day, you act as Amazon's owner on the ground - ensuring the safe, on-time, and on-budget execution of construction projects across your region. Your day may include:
• Coordinating with general contractors on project status, upcoming milestones, and emerging risks
• Reviewing and responding to RFIs, submittals, change order requests, and schedule updates
• Participating in AOC meetings and driving accountability across the project team
• Conducting site visits to verify construction quality and safety compliance
• Updating Amazon's project management systems with current budget, schedule, and status information
• Collaborating with internal stakeholders on facility readiness, equipment coordination, and operational handover planning
• Reviewing design documents and providing feedback to engineering and design partners
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field

- 5+ years of experience negotiating construction, procurement, and/or labor contracts
- 5+ years of proficiency with AutoCAD and/or BIM, and scheduling software (Primavera, MS Project, or similar)
- Position includes travel up to 60%. Travel involves air travel to regional airports and driving to site locations. A valid driver's license is required due to project assignments in areas with limited public transportation and rideshare options.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in General Contracting, Owner's Representation, Commercial Development, Engineering & Design
- Demonstrated success communicating project requirements to diverse audiences including senior leadership, public officials, vendors, and operational teams
- Experience in facilities management, including planning, design review, implementation, and project controls
