The Work You Will Do:

State Bridge Maintenance & Repair Engineer

Structure Maintenance, Office of Maintenance

This position requiring registration as a Professional Engineer under Florida Statute 471, is responsible for developing and overseeing policies, procedures, standards, and methods for the statewide bridge repair and scour evaluation programs. The role ensures district compliance with federal and state regulations through quality assessment reviews and coordination with District Maintenance Offices on workload allocation and funding for bridge repair and replacement. It also provides technical support to the State Aluminum Structures Shop, conducts inspections of temporary bridge installations, and prepares the department’s official deficient bridge list when helping prioritize statewide bridge replacement needs. Additional duties include supporting bridge management system development, maintaining the bridge maintenance and repair manual, contributing to research and training, preparing reports for internal and external stakeholders, monitoring statewide scour evaluation activities, coordinating required reports to FHWA, and performing other assigned responsibilities.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

This position requires registration as a Professional Engineer in accordance with Florida Statute 471 and is responsible for developing policies, rules, procedures and standards for the bridge repair program that is a specialized phase of highway engineering and monitoring the districts' conformance to these policies and procedures. General duties include development of methods, practices, procedures, and policies for the bridge repair program, scour evaluation program, and review district operations for compliance with Federal and State requirements and regulations. Work performed under the general direction of the State Structures Maintenance Engineer.

Work with the District Maintenance Offices and the Work Program Office to determine route bridge maintenance workload allocation for bridges, allocate bridge replacement and repair (BRRP) funds, and review the development of the tentative work program.

Develop policies, rules, procedures, and standards required to implement and operate bridge replacement and repair program.

Perform district quality assessment reviews on bridges for compliance with state and federal requirements and regulations.

Coordinate issues and provide technical assistance to the State Aluminum Structures Shop (SASS), including the coordination of the delivery of temporary bridge components between the SASS and Contractors, and perform inspections of temporary bridge installations, as needed.

Prepare department’s official deficient bridge list, project needs, and prioritize statewide bridge replacement projects. Provide support to the bridge management system (BMS) development.

Develop and maintain the bridge maintenance and repair manual. Initiate and participate in bridge repair, maintenance, research, and training.

Preparation and distribution of status and data reports on bridge needs, repairs, and replacement for a broad range of users inside and outside the department.

Monitor the statewide scour evaluation program. Oversee and coordinate the districts scour reports sent to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

Oversee and record the monthly critical deficiency reports sent to FHWA.
