Alternative Protein information

What is an alternative protein?

An Alternative Protein job focuses on developing, producing, and commercializing protein sources that serve as sustainable alternatives to traditional animal-based proteins. This can include plant-based proteins, cultivated meat, fermentation-derived proteins, and other emerging technologies. Roles in this field span research and development, food science, bioprocessing, product management, and marketing. Professionals work to improve taste, texture, nutrition, and scalability of alternative protein products to meet consumer demand and environmental goals.

What are the typical responsibilities of someone working in an alternative protein position?

Professionals in an Alternative Protein role are usually responsible for conducting research and development of new protein sources, optimizing production processes, and ensuring compliance with food safety standards. Daily tasks may include designing experiments, running product trials, analyzing nutritional data, and collaborating closely with engineers, marketers, and regulatory teams. They also play a key role in scaling up laboratory concepts for commercial production and troubleshooting process challenges as they arise. This hands-on, cross-functional work environment provides ample opportunities for skill-building and career growth within the sustainable food industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the alternative protein position, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Alternative Protein role, you generally need a background in food science, biotechnology, or a related life sciences field, along with experience in research and product development. Familiarity with laboratory techniques, analytical instrumentation, and food safety regulations, as well as certifications in quality assurance or HACCP, are commonly used in this industry. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and project management skills help individuals excel when working with interdisciplinary teams to innovate new protein alternatives. These competencies are crucial for meeting industry demands, ensuring product safety and quality, and driving successful product launches in a rapidly evolving sector.

Job description

About us

EVERY™ is a leading VC-backed food tech ingredient company and market leader using precision fermentation to create animal proteins without the animal for the global food and beverage industry. EVERY™ is a team of passionate change-makers who are reimagining the factory farm model with a kinder, more sustainable alternative. Leveraging precision fermentation to produce hyper-functional and one-to-one replacement proteins from microorganisms, EVERY™ is on a mission to decouple the world's proteins from the animals that make them. We are a passionate, determined (and fun!) team with a vital objective, and we're on the lookout for like-minded people to join our mission. The Role:

This unique entry-level Research Associate I position offers the rare chance to work across two core teams, Analytics and Protein Science. You'll gain hands-on experience supporting protein development, purification, and analysis, while learning how these disciplines work together to drive innovation in precision fermentation.

This is a great opportunity for someone early in their career who thrives in the lab, loves variety, and wants to learn fast in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.

What you'll accomplish

  • Generate data through basic biochemistry/molecular biology techniques (including but not limited to BCA, SDS-PAGE)
  • Operate and maintain analytical equipment (e.g., HPLC-UV/RI and Combustion Analyzer, dynamic light scatterer, FPLC-UV, fluorescence/UV plate reader)
  • Support protein characterization workflows through lab-scale protein powder generation involving bench-scale downstream processing unit operations (microfiltration, ultrafiltration, diafiltration)
  • Prepare samples, reagents, and buffers to support cross-functional experiments
  • Collaborate with scientists and engineers across teams to troubleshoot and iterate quickly as part of our Design, Build, Test, and Learn pipeline
  • Present results to the technology organization in regular meetings of scientific teams
  • Maintain lab organization, cleanliness, and proper documentation

 What you bring (required)

    • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related field
    • Some hands-on lab experience (academic, internship, or industry), with an emphasis on analytical instrumentation familiarity
    • A detail-oriented mindset exemplified in experiment note-taking, report writing, and communication of experimental results to team members
    • Comfortable with basic wet lab techniques (especially pipetting with single and multichannel pipettes) and eager to learn new ones
    • Collaborative, organized, and enthusiastic about working across teams

Why you'll love it here:

  • Comprehensive benefits: 100% medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401k matching, and stock options
  • Tasty perks: Weekly catered lunches
  • Customizable options: FSA, LSA, Commuter, Pet Care, and additional life insurance
  • Work-life harmony: Flexible PTO and 10+ paid company holidays per year
  • Onsite conveniences: Free parking and unlimited gym access
  • Energizing refreshments: Unlimited sparkling water, granola bars, snacks, local coffee, and tea
  • Exciting socials: happy hours and quarterly company outings
  • Open communication: Monthly all-hands meetings and direct access to CEO and leadership
  • Ideal location: Close to Daly City BART
