What is an alternative investments analyst?

Alternative investments analysts are finance professionals who evaluate and manage investment opportunities outside of traditional assets like stocks, bonds, and cash. Their work focuses on alternative assets such as private equity, hedge funds, real estate, commodities, and infrastructure. They perform market research, analyze financial data, assess risks, and help firms or clients make informed investment decisions. These analysts play a crucial role in diversifying investment portfolios and seeking higher returns or lower volatility compared to conventional investments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an alternative investments analyst?

To excel as an Alternative Investments Analyst, you typically need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of financial markets, and a degree in finance, economics, or a related field. Familiarity with financial modeling software, Bloomberg Terminal, and certifications like CFA are highly valued. Exceptional attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for accurately assessing investment opportunities and conveying insights to stakeholders, ultimately driving informed investment decisions.

What are some common challenges faced by alternative investments analysts when evaluating non-traditional assets?

Alternative Investments Analysts often encounter challenges such as limited transparency, complex valuation methods, and less standardized data when analyzing assets like private equity, hedge funds, or real estate. These investments may lack readily available market prices, requiring analysts to use specialized models and conduct extensive due diligence. Additionally, coordinating with legal, compliance, and portfolio management teams to assess risk and ensure regulatory compliance is a key part of the role. Developing strong research skills and attention to detail is essential for overcoming these challenges and providing actionable insights.

Job description

About Rockefeller Capital Management

Rockefeller Capital Management was established in 2018 as a leading independent financial advisory services firm. Originally founded in 1882 as the family office of John D. Rockefeller, the Firm has evolved to offer strategic advice to ultra- and high-net-worth individuals and families, institutions, and corporations from offices in 33 markets throughout the United States, as well as an office in London. The Firm oversees $224 billion in client assets as of June 30, 2026.

Position

The Alternative Investments Reporting Operations role will sit on the Investment Reporting team, collaborating with the Head of Investment Reporting Operations, the Head of Client Reporting & Alternative Investment Services, and the Performance and Alternative Reporting teams. This is a dual-function position that combines core performance reporting responsibilities with specialized support for alternative and specialty asset reporting.

  • Performance Reporting: Provides core platform and field support for the Addepar performance reporting platform-maintains the accuracy of performance data, calculations, and reporting, and serves as the primary contact for training, inquiries, and escalations between advisors and the vendor.
  • Alternative Investment Reporting: Owns the operational management, data quality, reconciliation, and reporting of client-held investments not supported through traditional custodial feeds or standard market data providers. This function also performs data quality analysis across Rockefeller's alternative investment data ecosystem and assists with on-platform alternative investment integrations.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organized, and an effective communicator with a strategic mindset. They demonstrate strong time management skills, approach challenges with speed and precision, and are committed to continuous learning and professional growth. Success in this role requires the ability to thrive both independently and as a collaborative team member, while building strong relationships and navigating effectively across a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee the entire investment performance data cycle, from collection to quality review to report creation. Support the accuracy of alternative and specialty asset data utilized in client reporting and investment performance calculations.
  • Support the Addepar performance reporting platform, serving as a core platform resource for configuration, reporting, performance calculations, and related advisor inquiries.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between advisors/internal stakeholders and performance and data vendors - fielding inquiries and escalations and resolving data discrepancies to keep operations running smoothly.
  • Track, manage, and resolve field inquiries, including support for quality reviews and follow-ups on non-responsive incidents.
  • Train and educate private advisors and their teams on performance and reporting systems, calculations, and concepts.
  • Develop and maintain support metrics to analyze incident trends, measure vendor responsiveness, and identify opportunities for workflow improvement.
  • Investigate performance outliers and anomalies related to alternative and specialty assets, assist in reconciliation and ensuring records align with reporting standards and internal governance requirements.
  • Process position, transaction, valuation, and cash flow activity for off-platform investments.
  • Coordinate with advisors, vendor partners, fund managers, and custodians to obtain required data and supporting documentation.
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly reconciliations and data-validation checks across source documents, vendor platforms, and internal systems - identifying, investigating, and resolving data anomalies.
  • Validate capital activity between manager statements, capital activity statements, custodian feeds, and internal systems; verify manager marks versus custodian placeholder values.
  • Monitor data quality controls and ensure adherence to established operating procedures.
  • Communicate data defects, trends, and remediation progress to leadership and key stakeholders.
Qualifications
  • BA/BS degree in Finance, Mathematics, Accounting, Economics, Statistics, Data Analytics, Business, or a related field; non-finance majors with relevant experience are welcome to apply.
  • 2-5+ years of experience across investment operations, performance reporting, alternative investment operations, reconciliation, portfolio accounting, or wealth management operations.
  • Prior client service experience within the financial industry, or equivalent experience, preferred.
  • Experience managing financial accounts, reconciliation, and performance reporting cycles.
  • Prior experience with alternative investment operations and alternative investment reporting, including supporting private equity, hedge funds, private credit, real estate investments, and other non-traditional investment products.
Skills
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and Excel skills.
  • Experience with portfolio accounting, reporting, and data management platforms.
  • Knowledge of alternative investment products, structures, cash flow events, and performance reporting.
  • Ability to perform complex reconciliations and ensure data accuracy across multiple systems.
  • Experience with data quality controls, exception management, and operational reporting.
  • Familiarity with platforms such as Addepar, Tamarac, iCapital, Mirador, Arch, or similar investment reporting systems preferred. Understanding of portfolio reporting concepts, benchmarks, market data, and investment terminology.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and commitment to data integrity.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated, intellectually curious, and able to thrive both independently and in a team-oriented environment.
Compensation Range

The anticipated base salary range for this role is $75,000 to $90,000. Base salary for the role will depend on several factors, including a candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience, and may fall outside of the range shown.
