While both roles involve sewing skills, alterations are usually quicker fixes, whereas tailoring involves more craftsmanship and design work.

What is an alteration?

Alterations refer to changes made to clothing to improve the fit, style, or function. This can include hemming pants, taking in or letting out seams, adjusting waistbands, or modifying sleeves and hems. Professionals who perform alterations, often called tailors or seamstresses, use sewing skills and tools to modify garments based on a client's needs. Alterations can be simple, like shortening a hem, or complex, such as resizing a wedding dress. They help ensure that clothes fit comfortably and look their best.
