Job description

Duties Description Under the supervision of the Principal Engineering Technician, SG-16, the Trades Generalist, SG-12 will perform journey-level work in the primary trade of operating heavy equipment. Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Operate and maintain a variety of construction equipment including, but not limited to asphalt pavers, rollers, cold planers, heavy dump trucks, front end loaders, skid steer loaders, backhoes, excavators, bulldozers, and tractor w/low boy trailer.
• Performs the safe, efficient operation of machinery to spread, level, and smooth asphalt or other materials ensuring proper grade, thickness, and compaction.
• Assist others in maintenance, repair, installation and construction activities related to equipment and road/highway infrastructure.
• Participate in project planning, including laying out procedures, reading blueprints, and coordinating assigned projects.
• Purchase necessary materials and supplies for equipment operation and maintenance.
• Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as cleaning, changing oil, fuel, spark plugs, air and hydraulic filters.
• Check fluid levels, tire pressure, safety devices and control mechanisms of machines before operation.
• Ensure the safe and efficient operation of equipment.
• Conduct performance checks and routine maintenance and repairs on machines.
• Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities and equipment performance.
The work involves medium to heavy manual labor and daily travel.
Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience in heavy equipment under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
*If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.
Additional Comments Operating Needs:
Must be available to work a variable schedule that includes weekends, holidays and/or evening shifts.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license that allows the candidate to operate a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
Must possess a valid ***Class A Commercial Driver's License or obtain one within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.
Must be able to work in hot, cold, and inclement weather conditions.
******Under the provision of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (1991), this position has been designated Safety Sensitive. The incumbent is required to participate in pre-employment, random and post-accident drug and alcohol testing.
