Job description

Chief Medical Officer, BC Children's Hospital

PROVINCIAL HEALTH SERVICES AUTHORITY

PHSA has a unique role in BC’s health authority system: to ensure that BC residents have access to a coordinated provincial network of high-quality specialized health care services. BC Children's Hospital (BCCH) is a world-renowned institution providing expert care for the province’s most seriously ill or injured newborns, children, youth, and young adults. BCCH also delivers a diverse range of specialized and one-of-a-kind tertiary mental health and substance use services for children, adolescents, and young adults across the province. BCCH works in partnership and cooperation with the province’s health authorities and health care professionals to improve access to evidence-informed practice and support optimal health outcomes for children and families living in British Columbia.

PHSA’s work is guided by its purpose to inspire and unite specialized teams to create a healthier province for all, as well as its vision to createan equitable, anti-racist, and culturally safe health care system where everyone thrives. The work of PHSA is guided by the Coast Salish Teachings gifted to the organization by Coast Salish Knowledge KeeperSiem Te Ta'in(Shane Pointe).

Reporting to the Executive Vice-President, Clinical Service Delivery (EVP) and the Vice President of Medical and Academic Affairs (VPMAA) and working in full partnership with the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is the most senior medical leader within BC Children's Hospital. Supporting physicians, nurse practitioners, and dentists, the CMO ensures all programs and services are delivered to the highest quality and standard of medical care. Together, the CMO and COO provide leadership for the human, financial, and material resources required to support the goals, policies, and vision of BCCH and PHSA. The CMO also holds executive accountability for research programs and champions a highly innovative and intellectual research culture. In addition, the CMO works closely with counterparts across the campus to ensure integration and continuity of care.

The ideal candidate is a highly regarded clinician and seasoned medical leader who can oversee a broad portfolio and manage a multitude of critical relationships and initiatives. They bring the ability to balance long-term vision with day-to-day operational needs, along with a deep commitment to patient-centered care, clinician wellness, clinical excellence, and anti-racism. They have a track record of developing and implementing strategies that enhance clinical quality, provider wellness and safety, and patient outcomes through collaboration with clinical, academic, and research partners. They possess exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, enabling them to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams and a broad range of specialties within the children's health environment. Experience managing and mentoring physicians, and ideally other providers such as Nurse Practitioners, is essential. They are known for fostering a culture of continuous learning and promoting evidence-based practices. A practicing physician in an aligned discipline is strongly preferred, as is current registration with the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons, or eligibility for registration.

Candidates should bring deep clinical credibility and established relationships within pediatric health care. Experience and credibility in pediatrics, pediatric subspecialties, child and youth mental health, or a closely related specialty would be highly valued. The successful candidate will possess the clinical stature and leadership capability to engage, influence, and inspire a broad and diverse medical staff community.

The starting salary for this position will be determined with consideration of the successful candidate's relevant education, experience and clinical expertise, and in alignment with the provincial compensation frameworks for medical leaders. It will also be supplemented by a competitive benefits package.
