Job Title: Traffic Engineer

Location: Carson, CA 90745

Rate: Depends on experience

Position Overview

The Traffic Engineer will support day-to-day municipal traffic engineering activities under the direction of Public Works/City Engineer leadership. Work spans field investigations, traffic operations analyses (including signal timing/coordination and LOS/capacity reviews), neighborhood traffic management concepts, and development/plan check review for compliance with standards (e.g., CA MUTCD and local requirements). Deliverables include concise technical memos, updated timing plans, plan-check comments, and practical, data-driven recommendations aligned with City policy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct field reviews of intersections/corridors (signing, striping, pavement markings, and signal operations); document findings with photos, notes, and recommended corrective actions.
  • Respond to citizen and staff requests related to safety and operations; perform site visits and prepare summary memos.
  • Review and optimize traffic signal timing/coordination; prepare/update timing plans with supporting analysis.
  • Perform intersection/corridor operational analyses (capacity/LOS) and recommend improvements.
  • Develop concepts for traffic calming and neighborhood traffic management strategies.
  • Support evaluation of traffic control requests and collision history reviews.
  • Complete development review/plan checks (traffic signals, signing & striping, other traffic-related improvements), ensuring multimodal accessibility (ped/bike/transit) and conformance with City standards and policies.
  • Maintain regular communication with the client’s project lead and provide periodic status updates; submit deliverables in PDF and editable formats as requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Active California Traffic Engineer (TE) and/or Professional Engineer (PE) license; TE preferred (both desirable).
  • 5+ years of experience in traffic engineering/transportation planning or related public works, ideally with municipal/local government projects.
  • Demonstrated proficiency applying CA MUTCD, City Standards, and related engineering guidelines; familiarity with traffic modeling/analysis tools, GIS, and traffic signal software.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience preparing traffic calming concepts and neighborhood traffic management plans.
  • Strong technical writing for memos, plan-check comments, and recommendation briefs.
