What is an algorithmic trading developer?

An Algorithmic Trading Developer is a software professional who designs, builds, and maintains computer programs (algorithms) that automatically execute trades in financial markets. These developers combine knowledge of programming, quantitative analysis, and financial markets to create strategies that can analyze market data and place trades faster and more efficiently than human traders. Their work often involves working with large datasets, optimizing code for speed, and ensuring low-latency execution. They may also collaborate with traders and quantitative analysts to implement and test new trading ideas.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an algorithmic trading developer?

To thrive as an Algorithmic Trading Developer, you need strong programming skills (especially in Python, C++, or Java), a solid grasp of quantitative finance, and typically a degree in computer science, mathematics, or related fields. Expertise in trading platforms, financial data APIs, and familiarity with machine learning libraries and version control systems is common, alongside relevant certifications like CFA or CQF. Exceptional analytical thinking, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These capabilities enable developers to design, test, and optimize trading algorithms that perform reliably and profitably in dynamic financial markets.

What are some common challenges algorithmic trading developers face when deploying new trading strategies?

Algorithmic Trading Developers often encounter challenges such as ensuring low-latency execution, accurately backtesting strategies with real-world data, and managing the risks of live trading. Deployment requires close collaboration with quantitative analysts, traders, and IT teams to validate models and maintain robust infrastructure. Additionally, developers must monitor for unexpected market conditions and quickly address any system failures or regulatory changes that could impact trading performance.

What is the difference between Algorithmic Trading Developer vs Quantitative Analyst?

AspectAlgorithmic Trading DeveloperQuantitative Analyst
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Finance, or related fields; programming skillsDegree in Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, or Economics; strong analytical skills
Work EnvironmentDevelops trading algorithms, codes, tests, and implements trading systemsBuilds models, analyzes data, and provides trading insights
Employer & Industry UsageFinancial firms, hedge funds, trading firms focusing on system developmentInvestment banks, hedge funds, asset managers focusing on data analysis

While both roles work within the finance industry and require quantitative skills, Algorithmic Trading Developers primarily focus on coding and implementing trading algorithms, whereas Quantitative Analysts analyze data and develop models to inform trading strategies.

How to become an algorithmic trading developer?

To become an algorithmic trading developer, you typically need a strong background in computer science, mathematics, or finance, with proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C++, or Java. Knowledge of financial markets, trading strategies, and experience with data analysis, algorithm design, and trading platforms are essential. Gaining relevant certifications or completing specialized courses can also enhance your qualifications.

Job description

THE POSITIONOur roster has an opening with your name on it
Our Account Vertical is responsible for Registration, Authentication, User Identity and Verification journeys. Basically, if you've registered, logged-in, and managed your account on our platform, our engineering teams own this and more. You will be working specifically in our Access pillar, building a world class login experience while maturing how we make sure accounts across our platform (Sportsbook, Casino, Racing, DFS) are safe and secure by detecting and preventing unauthorized activities. Some of the technologies we use are Java, Typescript (React), Python, Terraform on AWS (K8s, EKS, Lambdas, RDS Aurora, SNS, SQS).
We're looking for passionate technologists, strong communicators, and those with a commitment to continuous improvement. The ideal candidate will have the confidence to propose pragmatic solutions to complex problems and be eager to learn from and educate others. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will work in empowered, multidisciplinary teams, autonomously tackling complex challenges that provide the very best experiences and products for a growing community of millions of players.
You use technology to solve straightforward problems, seeking input and guidance from team members. You may create or have responsibility to improve or invent small tools or applications. You can take defined design and turn it into code and deliver it on schedule, applying appropriate technologies and current software engineering best practices. You write secure, stable, testable, maintainable code with minimal defects. You are proficient in a broad range of data structures and algorithms, knowing when it is appropriate to use them and when it is not. You make appropriate implementation trade-off decisions. You participate in team design, scoping, and prioritization discussions. You seek to learn the business context and technologies behind your team's software. You work effectively with other team members & identify any opportunities/problems arising from technical decisions. You invent, refine, and develop your solutions to ensure they are meeting customer needs and team goals. You are a passionate advocate for your customer.
In addition to the specific responsibilities outlined above, employees may be required to perform other such duties as assigned by the Company. This ensures operational flexibility and allows the Company to meet evolving business needs.
THE GAME PLAN
Everyone on our team has a part to play
Your work is consistently of high quality. You solve difficult problems, applying appropriate technologies and best practices. You work with your team to invent, design, and build software that is stable and performant. You are proficient in a broad range of design approaches and know when it is appropriate to use them and when it is not. Your solutions are pragmatic. You consider the legacy of the code you produce and write code that an Engineer unfamiliar with the system can understand. You limit the use of short-term workarounds. You do things with the proper level of complexity the first time (or at least minimize incidental complexity). You create flexible software without over-engineering. You make appropriate trade-offs, re-use where possible, and are judicious about introducing dependencies. You are efficient with resource usage (e.g., system hardware, database, memory/CPU, etc.).
  • You own parts of product and technology & strive to become a subject matter expert.
  • You write simple and extendable code following standards and best practices. You test your code thoroughly. You help balance customer requirements with the team requirements.
  • You are able to lead projects and mentor more junior Engineers across FanDuel.
  • You help your team evolve by actively participating in the code review process, design discussions, team planning, and support ticket reviews.
  • You take on projects and make software enhancements that improve the team software and processes.
  • You work to resolve the root cause of complex problems, leaving software better and easier to maintain than when you found it.
  • You estimate stories/tasks accurately and deliver them in time. You keep yourself up to date with industry tools, utilities, and open-source frameworks.
  • Most importantly, you are humble, pragmatic, self-managed, thirsty for knowledge, never satisfied and always challenging the norm. Responsible for the state of the code you both inherit and produce

THE STATS
What we're looking for in our next teammate
  • BA/BS degree in Computer Science or related software engineering field, or 4+ years of relevant work experience preferred.
  • Deep experience and passion working with web libraries and frameworks, such as React and Typescript.
  • Strong experience writing distributed, highly scalable, and available backend systems & APIs using Java, Python or similar programming languages.
  • Experience with AI tools such as Cursor, Claude AI, or Microsoft Copilot.
  • Experience with full stacks, single-page applications and/or micro frontends.
  • Experience working with cloud-based infrastructure and technologies, preferably AWS.
  • Understanding DevOps concepts such as containers (e.g., Docker), orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes), and Infrastructure as Code (e.g., CloudFormation and/or Terraform).
  • Familiarity with observability/monitoring tools (e.g., Datadog).
  • A fundamental understanding of data structures and algorithms.
  • Strong sense of ownership, urgency, and drive.
  • Demonstrated abilities driving operational excellence and software best practices.
  • Expertise with testing concepts, test tools, and integrating testing and best practices in the SDLC.

Nice to Have:
  • Experience with native mobile development on iOS and/or Android (e.g., Swift, Kotlin, React Native).
  • Experience with experimentation/product analytics tools (e.g., Amplitude).

Don't check all the boxes? That's okay! We encourage you to still apply if you feel like you possess an adjacent skill set and are interested in learning more about this position.
