What is an algorithmic trader?

An algorithmic trader is a financial professional who uses computer algorithms to automate trading strategies in financial markets. These traders develop, test, and implement mathematical models that analyze market data and execute trades at speeds and frequencies impossible for humans. Algorithmic traders work in environments such as investment banks, hedge funds, and proprietary trading firms, and their goal is often to maximize returns while managing risk. They typically need strong skills in programming, quantitative analysis, and finance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an algorithmic trader?

To thrive as an Algorithmic Trader, you need a strong background in mathematics, statistics, programming (often Python, C++, or R), and a solid understanding of financial markets, usually supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with trading platforms, backtesting frameworks, and data analysis tools, plus certifications like CFA or FRM, are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure are vital soft skills for success in this fast-paced environment. These skills enable traders to develop effective, automated strategies that capitalize on market opportunities while managing risk efficiently.

What are some typical challenges faced by algorithmic traders in their day-to-day work?

Algorithmic traders often encounter challenges such as maintaining and updating trading algorithms to adapt to rapidly changing market conditions, ensuring low-latency execution, and managing the risks associated with automated trading. Collaborating closely with quantitative analysts, software engineers, and risk managers is essential to refine strategies and troubleshoot technical issues. Staying compliant with regulatory requirements and monitoring for unexpected market behaviors or system errors are also important aspects of the role.

The roles often overlap but differ mainly in their focus on trading execution versus model development.

How do you become an algorithmic trader?

To become an algorithmic trader, you typically need a strong background in mathematics, programming, and finance, often holding a degree in a related field such as computer science, engineering, or finance. Developing skills in programming languages like Python or C++, understanding trading strategies, and gaining experience with trading platforms and data analysis are essential steps. Many algorithmic traders also pursue certifications or advanced degrees to enhance their knowledge and credibility.

What does an algorithmic trader do?

An algorithmic trader develops and implements automated trading strategies using computer algorithms to execute trades at high speed and volume. They analyze market data, optimize algorithms, and monitor trading systems, often using programming languages like Python or C++ and trading platforms. The role requires strong quantitative skills and understanding of financial markets.

What We'll Bring:

At TransUnion, we are dedicated to finding ways information can be used to help people make better and smarter decisions. As a trusted provider of global information solutions, our mission is to help people around the world access the opportunities that lead to a higher quality of life, by helping organizations optimize their risk-based decisions and enabling consumers to understand and manage their personal information. Because when people have access to more complete and multidimensional information, they can make more informed decisions and achieve great things.
Every day TransUnion offers our employees the tools and resources they need to find ways information can be used in diverse ways. Whether it is helping businesses better manage risk, providing better insights so a consumer can qualify for their first mortgage or working with law enforcement to make neighborhoods safer, we are improving the quality of life for individuals, families, communities and local economies around the world.

What You'll Bring:

We are looking for product leaders who can operate in complex data-driven environments and drive improvement in foundational systems.

  • 5-8+ years of product management experience with proven ability to define OKRs and KPIs, define roadmaps, prioritize work, write clear requirements and user stories, drive release readiness and acceptance criteria, and deliver outcomes in cross-functional teams.

  • 5+ years of experience with data-intensive systems involving large datasets, data hygiene, standardization, identity resolution, and analytical processes; multi-region product development experience is a plus. Identity resolution experience is desirable (name, address, IP, device IDs, cookies, etc.).

  • Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills, including diagnosing data and system issues, proactively identifying algorithm changes and data shifts, breaking down complex systems, and identifying practical improvements.

  • Ability to work across technical and non-technical teams, translating between engineering, data science, and business stakeholders, and partnering with legal and compliance teams to ensure capabilities meet regulatory and contractual obligations.

  • Ownership mindset in comfortably operating in ambiguous environments, setting direction, and driving results without clear precedents in a matrixed environment; hold cross-functional partners accountable through clear plans, operating cadence, and escalations when needed.

  • Effective communication in clearly explaining complex topics, influencing decisions across stakeholders, and presenting to senior leaders.

  • Experience with Agile delivery and tools such as Jira and Confluence.

  • Nice to have familiarity with data matching, deduplication, or entity resolution concepts, and experience with regulated data environments.

Impact You'll Make:

We are hiring a Product Manager to lead our company's core identity platform. You will own the critical capability of identifying individuals accurately and building consumer profiles over time. You are accountable for continuously improving the quality, performance, and business value of this data platform, with a focus on identity-related capabilities such as search, match, and profile management.

This role has priority-setting authority for the platform, aligning to global standards and enterprise governance. You will operate at the intersection of data, technology, and product, working across teams to ensure this foundational capability evolves in line with business and customer needs. Where delivery capacity is shared, you will drive alignment on scope, sequencing, and release acceptance criteria, and escalate tradeoffs and risks through senior leadership and governing bodies.

  • Own the roadmap and continuous improvement of identity capabilities by defining and prioritize end-to-end lifecycle enhancements on data quality, linkage accuracy, system performance, and downstream business outcomes.

  • Drive measurable performance improvements by establishing and managing KPIs/OKRs and performance targets (e.g., algorithm quality and accuracy), and build proactive monitoring, alerting, and investigation routines. Champion a structured backlog and iterative enhancement program, aligning stakeholders on trade-offs, driving execution, and defining release readiness and success criteria.

  • Lead cross-functional execution by working across teams to convert business needs into clear technical direction, requirements, and priorities, ensuring coordinated delivery in a complex, shared environment. Establish a regular operating cadence to improve performance, resiliency, and responsiveness, including post-incident reviews and follow-through on corrective actions.

  • Operationalize the system for scale and reliability by building and maintaining documentation (capabilities, known behaviors, monitoring playbooks, controls, troubleshooting guides) to enable repeatable investigations, consistent stakeholder communications, and audit-ready traceability.

  • Represent the capability and drive alignment across the organization and the industries we serve. Support client requests and ensure industry-wide adoption of standards and best practices. Communicate effectively with stakeholders, including senior leadership.

  • Connect regional needs to global evolution by ensuring regional priorities and learnings are reflected in global product development by partnering with the Centre of Excellence, adopting shared standards, and contributing insights to enterprise-wide improvements.
