What is algorithm research?

Algorithm research involves studying, designing, analyzing, and optimizing algorithms to solve complex problems efficiently. Researchers in this field explore new computational methods, improve existing algorithms, and evaluate their performance in various contexts. This work is fundamental in areas like computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, and cryptography, driving technological advances and innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an algorithm researcher?

To excel as an Algorithm Researcher, you need a strong background in mathematics, computer science, and algorithm design, often supported by an advanced degree such as a master's or PhD. Proficiency with programming languages (like Python, C++, or Java), machine learning frameworks, and version control systems is essential. Analytical thinking, creativity, and effective communication are crucial soft skills that set top performers apart in this field. These skills are vital for developing innovative, efficient solutions and collaborating within interdisciplinary teams to solve complex computational problems.

What are the typical challenges faced by professionals in algorithm research roles and how can they best address them?

Algorithm Research professionals often encounter challenges such as bridging the gap between theoretical solutions and practical implementation, staying updated with rapid advancements in the field, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to integrate research outcomes into real-world products. To address these challenges, it is helpful to maintain strong communication with engineering teams, participate in continual learning through academic papers and conferences, and adopt an iterative approach to testing and refining algorithms. Building a habit of documenting experiments and results also streamlines collaboration and future development.

What is the difference between Algorithm Research vs Data Scientist?

AspectAlgorithm ResearchData Scientist
Required CredentialsAdvanced degrees in CS, Mathematics, or related fieldsDegree in CS, Statistics, or related fields; certifications like SAS or Python
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, R&D departments, academiaBusiness environments, analytics teams, tech companies

Job description

2026 Fall Intern, Digital Health Algorithms

Samsung Research America Digital Health Algorithms Team collaborates with top universities, hospitals, and healthcare-industry partners to collect large-scale data and develop novel AI/ML algorithms to transform how healthcare is delivered. We use design thinking to address some of healthcare's toughest challenges, from improving care and producing better outcomes, to reducing costs and expanding access.

Focusing on wearable, mobile, and cloud-based form factors, our multi-disciplinary team develops innovative technologies that we then turn into groundbreaking commercial products to support clinicians, patients, and consumers. We use advanced sensor technology to capture physiologic responses and make use of our AI/ML framework to build algorithms for developing digital biomarkers and digital interventions. We employ data analytics to supplement clinical care and facilitate remote patient monitoring, thereby helping patients make behavioral changes that improve their health and daily lives. Our work has been internationally recognized with 70+ peer-reviewed publications and 10 design awards.

Our portfolio of digital health algorithmic solutions are important tools in helping clinicians and their patients monitor and manage serious health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, and cancer; as wells chronic illnesses including mental health, diabetes, hypertension, depression, sleep disorders, and obesity. Our work encompasses the entire range of processes, from ideating, developing, and incubating; to designing and delivering market-ready products; to supporting and evolving currently released products.

We are looking for Ph.D. candidates with solid ML/AI/GenAI technology background and digital health-related research project experiences in multi-modal physiological health algorithm development, large-scale wearable data analytics, and physiological signal processing. By leveraging smartphones, wearables, and hearables in health/wellness domain, your work will significantly benefit real-world consumers, patients, the elderly, physicians, and caregivers.

Samsung's unique advantage in the consumer electronics market and growing focus on digital health will provide you with unprecedented large data sets and healthcare analytics challenges.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Work with an experienced digital health algorithm research team to develop novel and disruptive algorithms towards digital health services and solutions.
  • Design, implement, and optimize advanced AI models, including self-supervised learning, for health applications.
  • Work with large-scale time-series datasets to train and fine-tune ML/DL models using AWS AI services, ensuring scalability and efficiency.
  • Contribute to the development of novel AI methodologies to address complex healthcare challenges.

Required Skills:

  • Currently pursuing PhD degree in computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering or related areas
  • Solid coding skills with prototyping experience in AI model development, data science, and machine learning
  • Experience in physiological signal processing, large-scale time-series data analytics in digital health domain
  • Strong knowledge and experience in developing AI/ML foundation models and their finetuning approaches
  • Programming using languages such as Python, R, C/C++, Java, Android
  • Experience with cloud infra services like AWS, SageMaker Studio, GCP, SQL, and collaboration tools like github
  • Good communication/presentation skills and teamwork/collaboration spirit
  • Publication in top-tier journals and conferences
