Is ML a high paying job?

Machine Learning (ML) roles, including those in algorithm research, are generally well-paid due to the high demand for specialized skills in data analysis, programming, and statistical modeling. Salaries vary based on experience, location, and industry, but advanced ML positions often offer competitive compensation compared to other tech roles.

What is algorithmic research?

Algorithm research involves studying and developing new algorithms to solve computational problems efficiently. It requires understanding theoretical concepts, analyzing algorithm performance, and often involves programming and testing in environments like Python or C++. This work supports advancements in fields such as artificial intelligence, data analysis, and software development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Algorithm Researcher, and why are they important?

To excel as an Algorithm Researcher, you need a strong background in mathematics, computer science, and algorithm design, often supported by an advanced degree such as a master's or PhD. Proficiency with programming languages (like Python, C++, or Java), machine learning frameworks, and version control systems is essential. Analytical thinking, creativity, and effective communication are crucial soft skills that set top performers apart in this field. These skills are vital for developing innovative, efficient solutions and collaborating within interdisciplinary teams to solve complex computational problems.

Which 3 jobs will survive AI?

Algorithm research jobs are likely to persist because they involve developing new algorithms and understanding complex data, tasks that require human creativity and critical thinking. Roles in healthcare, such as medical professionals, and skilled trades like electricians or plumbers, are also expected to remain in demand due to the need for hands-on expertise and human judgment. These jobs often require specialized knowledge, certifications, or physical skills that are difficult for AI to replicate fully.

Is AI replacing algorithms?

Algorithm research involves developing and improving algorithms, which are fundamental to AI systems. AI often relies on algorithms to process data and make decisions, but it does not replace the need for algorithm development; instead, AI advances can lead to new algorithmic techniques and improvements. Researchers in this field focus on creating efficient, effective algorithms that support AI applications and other computational tasks.

What is Algorithm Research?

Algorithm research involves studying, designing, analyzing, and optimizing algorithms to solve complex problems efficiently. Researchers in this field explore new computational methods, improve existing algorithms, and evaluate their performance in various contexts. This work is fundamental in areas like computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, and cryptography, driving technological advances and innovation.

What are the typical challenges faced by professionals in Algorithm Research roles and how can they best address them?

Algorithm Research professionals often encounter challenges such as bridging the gap between theoretical solutions and practical implementation, staying updated with rapid advancements in the field, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to integrate research outcomes into real-world products. To address these challenges, it is helpful to maintain strong communication with engineering teams, participate in continual learning through academic papers and conferences, and adopt an iterative approach to testing and refining algorithms. Building a habit of documenting experiments and results also streamlines collaboration and future development.

What is the difference between Algorithm Research vs Data Scientist?

AspectAlgorithm ResearchData Scientist
Required CredentialsAdvanced degrees in CS, Mathematics, or related fieldsDegree in CS, Statistics, or related fields; certifications like SAS or Python
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, R&D departments, academiaBusiness environments, analytics teams, tech companies
Industry UsageDeveloping new algorithms, theoretical researchAnalyzing data, building predictive models, insights generation
Common Search/ComparisonYesNo

Algorithm Research focuses on developing and testing new algorithms, often in research or academic settings, requiring advanced technical credentials. Data Scientists analyze data to generate insights and build models, working primarily in business environments. While both roles involve data and programming, their core objectives and work settings differ significantly.

Company Description

Keen Decision Systems provides an AI-driven marketing platform that empowers marketing leaders and finance teams to make data-driven, future-focused business decisions. Our platform connects marketing investments to P&L performance, transforming marketing into a profitability driver.

Keen is different. As a Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Private Company and a Triangle Business Journal Top 10 Best Place to Work, we're growing quickly. But our growth isn't the only thing that differentiates us.

At Keen, we are proponents of a Conscious Culture. Conscious Culture is an environment built on purpose. A Conscious Culture means that time and effort have been invested into making sure that how our company operates is as important as our business outcomes. Because we work smarter Monday-Thursday, we're able to offer all employees a three-day weekend.

Job Description

What is a Senior Algorithms Engineer?

At Keen, the Senior Algorithms Engineer develops, deploys and improves the algorithms that run in Keen AI Cortex . You're a software engineer first, with the understanding of mathematics, data, and inference to read a model spec, question it, and suggest changes the Principal Algorithms Architectย  hadn't considered. You'll work directly with the Lead Engineer, and Principal Algorithms Architect, taking modeling ideas from prototype to production code and contributing to the algorithms when you see a better path.

What you'll do as the Senior Algorithms Engineer:

  • Own algorithmic features end-to-end across the next generation of Keen's AI Cortex. Design, implement, test, ship, and watch them run in production.

  • Pitch in on adjacent Python backend projects (Django and FastAPI APIs, AWS infrastructure) when a piece of work spans more than one service. ย ย  ย

  • Keep the engineering practices tight: code review, tests, CI gates, documentation, and a clean ticketed workflow. ย ย  ย

  • Use AI coding tools with judgment. Fast iteration is the point. So is catching the moments when the model is confidently wrong.

  • Develop algorithms from business ideas and turn them into production code

  • Collaborate with others in the development of the solutions, including the ability to effectively push back when the implementation can be improved .

  • Communicate clearly across Product, Research, and Engineering. Write the design doc, name the tradeoff, get the decision made.

Qualifications

What expertise do the best Senior Algorithms Engineers for Keen have? ย ย  ย

  • 7+ years shipping production Python on a team

  • Knowledge of inference methods, particularly in economics and business domains including time-series models (or more generally state-space modeling), probability modeling, and multivariate systems.

  • Comfortable with the engineering basics: tests, CI, code review, documentation, and working out of tickets ย ย  ย

  • Hands-on experience with AWS, Docker

  • Operates independently. Scopes own work, talks to stakeholders, makes judgment calls when no one else is available to make them

  • Writes and speaks clearly

  • Math foundation in linear algebra, probability, and statistics. Demonstrated ability to read and write mathematical specifications, interpret and improve documented solutions.ย ย

  • Working knowledge of pandas and NumPy, with understanding of the use of these packages in implementing algorithms.ย ย

Nice-to-have:

  • Marketing Mix Modeling (MMM) or another econometricย  background

  • Bayesian inference experience

  • Optimization exposure

  • A track record of developing mathematical algorithms into shipped production systems.

Benefits of Working with Keen:ย ย  ย  ย ย  ย

  • Mentoring and training from people who've been doing this for years

  • Hands-on work on Bayesian models, optimization, and the data engineering behind them, applied to a product real customers use

  • A seat in conversations across departments and at company-wide meetings

  • 4-day work week with 3-day weekends

  • Fully remote within the United States

Additional Information

Please read the following before submitting your resume for this position.ย

MUST be authorizedย to work in the United States. Keen is not able to provide sponsorship at this time. We hope to be able to do so in the near future!ย

MUST be able travel within the United States 1-3 times a year.ย

MUST haveย a reliable, everyday remote work desk station.ย

NOTE:ย ย If you are a candidate for a job here at Keen and have not interacted with a reputable recruiting firm or directly with a Keen team member with an "@keends.com" email domain, please block and/or report those contacts as spam.ย  Thank you for your time and we look forward to connecting!
