What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an airspace driver?

To succeed as an Airspace Driver, professionals generally need strong spatial awareness, exceptional hand-eye coordination, and a thorough understanding of aeronautical navigation and airspace regulations, often supported by a commercial pilot's license or specialized UAV/drone operator certification. Familiarity with advanced flight management systems, real-time air traffic control communications, and navigation software is crucial. Attention to detail, calm decision-making under pressure, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for this position. These abilities are critical for ensuring safe, efficient operations and compliance with safety standards in controlled airspace environments.

What are some common challenges faced by airspace drivers, and how are they typically addressed?

Airspace Drivers often encounter challenges such as rapidly changing weather conditions, complex airspace coordination with other operators, and strict adherence to safety protocols. Staying updated on airspace restrictions and maintaining clear communication with air traffic control helps address many of these issues. Employers typically provide recurring training and simulate potential scenarios to prepare drivers for in-flight contingencies. Collaborating closely with flight planners, maintenance crews, and regulatory authorities ensures smooth operations and helps mitigate risks. Adaptability and attention to detail are essential for effectively handling these challenges and maintaining safety.

How do you become an airspace driver?

To become an airspace driver, candidates typically need a valid driver's license, a clean driving record, and may require specialized training or certification depending on the specific vehicle or environment. Some roles may also require knowledge of airspace regulations, safety protocols, and operating equipment in controlled or aerial environments.

Job description

Radar Reinvented.

Echodyne offers the world’s first compact solid‑state true beam‑steering radar for a wide range of industries and applications. Our high‑performance radars work in all weather and are designed for autonomous vehicles, uncrewed aircraft & drones, and security of borders, critical infrastructure, and smart cities. The company combines the patented technology of metamaterials with powerful software to create a radar sensor with unprecedented performance at commercial price points. Echodyne offers its radars to companies working in Automotive, Transportation, Critical Infrastructure Protection, Border Security, Smart Cities, Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS), and Airspace Management including Urban Air Mobility (UTM).

Echodyne is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, IoT Platform, to join our fast‑growing team. Who You Are

You are a technical, hands‑on lead engineer who thrives at the intersection of edge computing and cloud‑native integration. You lead by example—writing clean, high‑performance code while mentoring the engineers on your team. You are comfortable going deep into on‑device logic while simultaneously navigating AWS services to ensure a seamless "edge‑to‑cloud" connection. You are a builder and a driver, ensuring that the components living on the radar are built with clarity, reliability, and real‑world mission constraints in mind.

Required Experience
  • Hands‑on Edge Development: Strong proficiency in high performance languages like Rust or C++, with a focus on building middleware or services that live directly on hardware/client devices. Python experience a nice to have.
  • AWS API & Service Expertise: Deep experience working with AWS IoT Core, AWS SDKs, and RESTful APIs. You understand how to leverage cloud services (e.g., Kinesis, S3, Lambda) from an edge perspective to manage telemetry and state.
  • Technical Leadership: Experience as a Lead or Senior Engineer (3+ years in leadership) with a track record of driving a small team to meet delivery commitments.
  • Security Fundamentals: Solid understanding of secure coding practices and the implementation of AuthN/AuthZ (e.g., X.509 certificates, IAM roles) and data privacy on edge devices.
  • Full‑Stack Visibility: Understanding of the tiered software stack, from on‑device telemetry and middleware to the cloud‑side ingestion layers.
  • Bias for Action: Proven ability to move fast and maintain sound engineering judgment in 0 → 1 or rapid R&D environments.
What Sets You Apart
  • The Integration Specialist: You don't just write code for the device; you understand the entire data journey, ensuring that edge logic and AWS APIs work in perfect harmony.
  • Architectural Empathy: You understand the unique constraints of the edge (latency, bandwidth) and can translate those into actionable integration requirements.
  • Low‑Ego Ownership: You operate with an impact‑driven mindset, taking full accountability for the technical success and reliability of the device‑side software.
What You Do
  • Develop & Integrate: Act as a technical driver for components living on the edge, specifically focusing on how those components interact with AWS cloud services and APIs.
  • Shepherd Local Innovation: Drive the design and implementation of robust interfaces that ensure reliability in "disconnected" or high‑latency environments.
  • Collaborate in Tandem: Work closely with the Principal Cloud Tech Lead to implement the contracts and protocols required for secure, high‑throughput device‑to‑cloud communication.
  • Mentor & Coach: Support the growth of engineers on the edge team, ensuring high standards for code quality, AWS integration best practices, and pragmatic development.
  • Anticipate Challenges: Use your hands‑on engineering background to identify technical risks early and ensure the edge‑to‑cloud bridge is durable and secure.

Echodyne’s technology is export controlled by the U.S. Government and we must evaluate an applicant’s eligibility to handle export‑controlled information or obtain required Government authorizations. Therefore, we will ask you as part of the application process to identify whether you are a U.S. Citizen or green card holder, or have asylum/refugee status in the U.S.

WHAT WE OFFER This is an exempt role.

The expected annual salary range for this role is $137,196—$205,382 USD

We offer competitive compensation and benefits to our full‑time, US‑based employees, including:

  • RSU (Restricted Stock Units)
  • Generous Benefits:
    • Fully‑paid medical, dental, and vision insurance premiums for you
      • Choice of PPO or HDHP/HSA

      • Employee Assistance Program
  • Mental Health coverage through Springhealth & Talkspace (Premera)
  • Travel Assistance Insurance
  • Company Paid Life Insurance
  • Company Paid Short & Long Term Disability
  • Flexible PTO (exempt) / 15 days per year (non‑exempt)
  • 401(k) match
  • Pet Insurance
  • Prepaid Legal Program
  • Commuter Benefits
  • Paid Company Holidays
