What is an Airflow developer?

Airflow Developers are professionals who design, build, and maintain data workflows using Apache Airflow, an open-source platform for orchestrating complex computational workflows and data processing pipelines. They are responsible for writing, scheduling, and monitoring tasks (DAGs) that automate data movement and transformation across systems. Airflow Developers work closely with data engineers, analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure reliable and efficient data pipeline automation. Their expertise includes Python programming, Airflow configuration, troubleshooting, and best practices for scalable workflow management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Airflow developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Airflow Developer, you need strong programming skills in Python, experience with data pipelines, and a solid understanding of workflow orchestration concepts. Familiarity with Apache Airflow, cloud platforms (like AWS or GCP), and version control systems such as Git are typically required, along with knowledge of containerization tools like Docker. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are key soft skills for collaborating with data teams and troubleshooting complex workflows. These competencies ensure reliable, scalable, and maintainable data pipeline solutions that support organizational data needs.

What are some common challenges Airflow developers face when managing complex data pipelines, and how can these be addressed?

Airflow Developers often encounter challenges such as managing dependencies between tasks, handling large-scale workflows, and ensuring reliable pipeline execution. To address these, it's essential to design modular DAGs (Directed Acyclic Graphs), implement robust error handling, and use features like sensors and retries strategically. Collaboration with data engineers and stakeholders is also key for troubleshooting and optimizing workflows. Effective monitoring and logging practices further help in quickly identifying and resolving issues.

What is the difference between Airflow Developer vs Data Engineer?

AspectAirflow DeveloperData Engineer
Required CredentialsKnowledge of Apache Airflow, Python, SQLData modeling, SQL, Python, cloud platforms
Work EnvironmentFocus on workflow orchestration, automationData pipeline development, storage, processing
Industry UsageTech, finance, healthcare for workflow automationBroad industries for data infrastructure

While both roles involve working with data and Python, an Airflow Developer specializes in designing and maintaining workflow automation using Apache Airflow. In contrast, a Data Engineer builds and manages data pipelines and infrastructure across various tools and platforms. The roles often overlap but differ mainly in scope and focus.

Does Airflow require coding?

Airflow developers typically need to have programming skills in Python, as workflows are defined using code. Coding knowledge is essential for creating, maintaining, and troubleshooting data pipelines in Airflow.

Is Airflow part of DevOps?

An Airflow Developer works with Apache Airflow, a platform used to programmatically author, schedule, and monitor workflows. While Airflow is often employed within DevOps environments to automate data pipelines and deployment processes, it is not inherently part of DevOps but complements DevOps practices by enabling automation and orchestration. Knowledge of CI/CD tools and infrastructure management is beneficial for such roles.

Job description

About Us

QISG leverages Quanta's comprehensive resources to deliver collaborative solutions for our partners' energy infrastructure needs. We use in-house talent, expertise and resources to plan, design, engineer, manage, conduct maintenance on and construct projects.

Our turnkey service capabilities provide our customers with efficiency, consistency, attention to detail and safe execution. The QISG team brings together Engineering, Safety, Quality, Material Procurement, QA/QC, Right-of-Way Acquisition, Scheduling, Environmental Planning, Permitting, Title and Land Management expertise that ensure outstanding results for our clients.

About this Role

Dynamic Systems (DSI), LLC is seeking a Pipe Stress, Hydraulic & CFD Engineer to support the design, analysis, and optimization of industrial process piping and HVAC/airflow systems. This role combines pipe stress analysis, hydraulic system modeling, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) including airflow and thermal performance modeling for critical environments such as data centers, cleanrooms, and industrial facilities - to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient system operation. Analytical results inform design decisions made across mechanical, process, and controls engineering teams.

What You'll Do

General

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, including mechanical and controls engineers
  • Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications, and visualizations summarizing modeling results for internal and client review
  • Stay current on modeling software, industry standards, and best practices in piping, hydraulic, and airflow/thermal analysis

Pipe Stress & Hydraulic Analysis

  • Perform pipe stress analysis and flexibility evaluations using CAESAR II, AutoPIPE, ROHR2, or equivalent software
  • Perform hydraulic modeling and flow analysis using PIPE-FLO
  • Analyze pressure drop, flow distribution, control valve performance, pump sizing, and system operating conditions
  • Evaluate piping systems for thermal expansion, sustained loads, occasional loads, vibration, wind, and seismic effects
  • Evaluate equipment nozzle loads and develop support recommendations

CFD & Airflow/Thermal Analysis

  • Build and run CFD models to evaluate airflow, temperature distribution, and thermal performance of HVAC systems and building spaces
  • Analyze and validate design assumptions for critical environments (data centers, labs, cleanrooms)
  • Translate CFD results into actionable design recommendations for the engineering team
  • Support commissioning by comparing as-built performance to modeled predictions
What You'll Bring

We are actively seeking both early-career engineers with approximately 2+ years of relevant experience and experienced technical leaders with 10+ years of expertise. Candidates at all qualified experience levels are encouraged to apply.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience in one or more of the following: pipe stress analysis, hydraulic modeling, or CFD analysis (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, Siemens STAR-CCM+, CAESAR II, AutoPIPE, ROHR2, PIPE-FLO, or similar)
  • Strong understanding of fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and piping/HVAC system behavior
  • Ability to communicate complex analytical findings clearly to non-specialist engineers and project managers
  • Relevant experience level: approximately 2+ years (early-career) or 10+ years (senior/technical lead) -candidates at all qualified levels encouraged to apply

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience modeling mission-critical facilities (data centers, cleanrooms, pharma)
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Scripting/automation experience (Python, MATLAB) for modeling workflows
  • Experience supporting semiconductor, life sciences, or advanced manufacturing projects

  • Competitive base salary commensurate with experience
  • 401(k) plan with company match
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Paid holidays, vacation, and personal time
  • Training, professional development, and support for licensure/professional association dues
