What is an aircraft designer CAD?

Aircraft Designer CAD professionals are specialists who use Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to create detailed plans, blueprints, and 3D models of aircraft components or entire airplanes. They play a crucial role in the aviation industry by translating engineering concepts and aerodynamic requirements into precise digital designs. Their work helps ensure that aircraft are structurally sound, meet safety standards, and are ready for manufacturing. These professionals often collaborate with engineers and other designers throughout the development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an aircraft designer CAD?

To thrive as an Aircraft Designer CAD, you need a strong background in aeronautical engineering, proficiency in CAD software, and a solid grasp of design principles, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with technical tools such as CATIA, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and simulation software, as well as knowledge of industry standards, is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help set exceptional candidates apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for creating safe, innovative, and efficient aircraft designs that meet rigorous industry requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by aircraft designer CAD professionals when collaborating with multidisciplinary teams?

Aircraft Designer CAD professionals often work closely with engineers, manufacturing experts, and project managers, which can present challenges related to communication and integrating feedback from multiple disciplines. Balancing design innovation with strict safety, weight, and cost requirements is another frequent hurdle. Additionally, synchronizing CAD models with evolving project specifications and ensuring design compatibility across systems requires strong organizational and collaboration skills. Effective teamwork and adaptability are key to overcoming these challenges and delivering high-quality aircraft designs.

What is the difference between Aircraft Designer Cad vs Aircraft Design Engineer?

AspectAircraft Designer CadAircraft Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering, proficiency in CAD softwareRequires a degree in aerospace engineering, often with additional certifications or experience in design
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, CAD labs, aerospace manufacturing facilitiesDesign offices, R&D departments, aerospace companies
Industry UsageUsed by aerospace companies for initial design and modelingInvolved in detailed design, analysis, and testing of aircraft components

Aircraft Designer Cad focuses on creating detailed 3D models and drawings using CAD software, primarily during the conceptual and preliminary design phases. Aircraft Design Engineers build upon these models, performing analysis, testing, and refining designs to meet safety and performance standards. Both roles are essential in the aircraft development process but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Job description

Description

Chrysalis is SHINE's flagship Molybdenum-99 production facility, designed to become the world's largest isotope production facility and a first-of-a-kind, nuclear-enabled chemical processing plant. Chrysalis will directly expand the supply of a critical medical isotope used in tens of millions of diagnostic procedures each year, at a moment when the global supply chain badly needs it.

The Designer (CAD) designs and documents plant systems, including process systems (piping, pressure vessels, pumps, valves, and similar components), HVAC, fire protection, civil and structural systems, cooling systems, electrical distribution, and architectural features. The 3D models produced in this Designer (CAD) role support coordination of design and construction activities, including interference identification, seismic evaluations, generation of piping isometrics, and drawings supporting construction and operations.

The annual base salary range for this position is $78,000.00 - $95,000.00 plus a comprehensive compensation package. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. This is an onsite position located in Janesville, WI.

What You'll Do

The following functions are essential to this position. An employee in this position must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily, with or without reasonable accommodation. This list is representative and not exhaustive.

Modeling and Design

โ€ข Design and document plant process systems using 3D modeling tools, including components, process skids, and facility plans covering mechanical, fire protection, plumbing, and electrical scopes, integrating information from a variety of vendors and CAD/BIM platforms.

โ€ข Create and modify Process Flow Diagrams (PFD), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID), and 3D plant and system piping in AutoCAD Plant 3D.

โ€ข Create and modify 3D models and associated detailed 2D drawings for structural and architectural design in Revit.

โ€ข Create and modify process skids in SolidWorks, incorporating reference geometry imported from external CAD platforms.

โ€ข Develop the design and drafting of complex piping drawings from baseline information such as P&IDs, General Arrangements (GA), piping specifications, and equipment arrangement drawings.

โ€ข Modify 3D models of tanks, vessels, piping, and equipment, and generate the associated detailed mechanical drawings.

โ€ข Design systems supporting the safe, efficient, and effective operation of the facility, equipment, and controls required for the production and processing of medical isotopes and fissile solutions.

Coordination and Model Integration

โ€ข Partner with engineers and stakeholders across multiple review formats to translate technical feedback and informal design notes into accurate model updates.

โ€ข Work across the engineering organization to identify and resolve design conflicts, updating the integrated model accordingly.

โ€ข Provide design recommendations to other designers and engineers.

Field Verification

โ€ข Conduct walkdowns of the plant site and installed systems to capture as-built conditions and reconcile them against the model of record.

Requirements

โ€ข Associate degree in engineering or a related discipline and three (3) to five (5) years of recent design experience, or a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline with recent design experience. (Relevant experience may be substituted for the degree requirement depending on the candidate.)

โ€ข Demonstrated proficiency using AutoCAD, Revit, or SolidWorks.

โ€ข Familiarity with drafting and design standards.

โ€ข Experience designing systems from the ground up, including responsibility for basic design considerations.

โ€ข Detail oriented, with the ability to communicate design rationale to designers and engineers.

โ€ข Proficiency with the AutoCAD Plant 3D toolset.

โ€ข Experience in pipe design.

โ€ข Experience with Navisworks Manage for model coordination and clash detection.
