What is an Airbnb host?

Airbnb hosts are individuals or property managers who offer their homes, apartments, or other types of accommodations for short-term rental on the Airbnb platform. Hosts are responsible for setting up their listings, communicating with guests, and ensuring a positive experience by providing clean and comfortable spaces. They can rent out entire properties, private rooms, or shared spaces, and are expected to meet Airbnb's standards for hospitality and safety. Being a successful Airbnb host often involves good communication, attention to detail, and responsiveness to guest needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Airbnb host, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Airbnb Host, you need strong hospitality skills, attention to detail, and a basic understanding of property management, often supported by experience in customer service or hospitality roles. Familiarity with the Airbnb platform, calendar management tools, and cleaning or maintenance services is important. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and adaptability help hosts create positive guest experiences and handle unexpected situations. These skills ensure high guest satisfaction, positive reviews, and a successful, sustainable hosting business.

What are some common challenges faced by Airbnb hosts and how can they be addressed?

Airbnb hosts often encounter challenges such as managing guest expectations, handling last-minute bookings or cancellations, and maintaining property cleanliness. Effective communication with guests and setting clear house rules can help prevent misunderstandings. Many hosts find it helpful to automate routine tasks, such as messaging and check-ins, using Airbnb’s platform tools. Additionally, building relationships with reliable cleaning and maintenance services ensures that the property remains in top condition, which is crucial for positive guest reviews and repeat bookings.

Job description

The Community You Will Join:

Our Product Managers imagine the ideal experience for our community and work backwards, creating innovative products that delight our guests and hosts. They deeply understand the needs of our users and translate these into a strategy that combines strong product thinking and deep research. They partner with talented cross-functional team members across engineering, design, operations, data science, and more, leading teams to execute a shared vision. They are incredibly detail-oriented and hands on.

The Difference You Will Make:

Airbnb is seeking an exceptional product manager to reimagine how guests search on Airbnb. Search is the front door to the entire guest experience - the moment someone tells us what they want and we have to understand it, then show them the right options in the right order. Today that means query understanding, filtering, and ranking. Tomorrow it means next-generation AI capabilities that let guests search more naturally, get better matches with less effort, and trust that Airbnb understood what they were actually looking for.

In this role, you will own the vision and roadmap for the future of search at Airbnb - pushing beyond keyword and filter-based search toward more intelligent, conversational, and personalized ways for guests to find their perfect stay. You'll partner closely with engineering, design, and data science teams to bring new AI-powered search capabilities from concept to guests.

This is a high-visibility role building one of the most consequential surfaces in the guest experience, and will regularly interface with senior engineering and leadership stakeholders.

A Typical Day:

  • Define and drive the long-term vision and roadmap for the future of search on Airbnb, including next-generation AI capabilities like natural language and conversational search, query understanding, and intelligent ranking.
  • Own how guests search on Airbnb end to end - from the moment they express intent to the moment they find the right option.
  • Partner closely with engineering, applied ML, and data science teams to design, prototype, and ship AI-powered search experiences.
  • Use quantitative analysis and experimentation (A/B testing) to validate that new search capabilities improve relevance, conversion, and guest satisfaction.
  • Translate ambiguous guest problems into clear product requirements, prioritized against business impact and technical feasibility.
  • Collaborate with design and research to understand how guests search, filter, and decide today - and where AI can remove friction.
  • Work cross-functionally with Host-side and Trust teams to ensure smarter search continues to surface the right inventory fairly and accurately.
  • Communicate roadmap, results, and trade-offs clearly to engineering partners and leadership.

Your Expertise:

  • 10+ years of consumer product management experience, with a track record of owning a product area end to end.
  • Experience working on search, discovery, ranking, or recommendation systems is strongly preferred.
  • Genuine excitement about applying modern AI and ML capabilities (LLMs, semantic search, conversational interfaces) to consumer product problems.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to use data, research, and experimentation to drive product strategy and decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with ML/data science teams and understand the trade-offs of model-driven products.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills across engineering, design, data science, and other cross-functional teams.
  • A user-centered mindset - you dig into how guests actually search and where they get stuck, not just metrics dashboards.

Your Location:

Due to the nature of this position, there is a strong preference for the successful applicant will need to be based in San Francisco, CA to be able to conduct their work. Currently, employees can not be located in: Alaska, Indiana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Delaware And Rhode Island.
