What is an air medical pilot?

An Air Medical Pilot is responsible for flying helicopters or airplanes to transport critically ill or injured patients to medical facilities. They work closely with medical teams to ensure safe and efficient air transportation, often responding to emergency calls. These pilots must have extensive flight experience, specialized training in aeromedical operations, and knowledge of safety protocols. They typically operate in challenging conditions, such as bad weather or remote locations, to provide life-saving transport services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an air medical pilot?

To thrive as an Air Medical Pilot, you need extensive flight experience, an FAA Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot certificate, and expertise in aviation safety procedures. Familiarity with advanced navigation systems, night vision goggles, and patient transport equipment is typically required. Outstanding decision-making, calmness under pressure, and excellent communication with medical and dispatch teams are crucial soft skills. These abilities are vital because Air Medical Pilots must ensure safe, efficient patient transport in high-stress, time-sensitive situations while collaborating seamlessly with healthcare professionals.

What are the typical work schedules and hours for air medical pilots?

Air Medical Pilots often work non-traditional hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, due to the around-the-clock nature of emergency medical services. Shifts can range from 12 to 24 hours, with pilots remaining on standby until a mission is dispatched, sometimes working several days on followed by several days off. Flexibility is essential, as flight assignments can be unpredictable and may occur in various weather conditions or during high-stress emergencies. The dynamic schedule allows for periods of downtime at the base but requires pilots to be prepared and alert at all times. This structure ensures rapid response to medical emergencies and supports critical patient care in regional or remote locations.

  • Opportunity to participate in community outreach
Important Bonus Details

California candidates may be eligible for a sign-on bonus of up to $37,500. Once overtime and double-time hours are calculated, additional wages may generate extra compensation, potentially making the total bonus value worth up to $75,000, depending on total overtime and double-time hours worked.

Key Responsibilities

As a VFR Helicopter Pilot, you will:

  • Perform line pilot duties in accordance with company operating procedures.
  • Operate aircraft safely and efficiently in support of air medical missions.

  • Maintain compliance with FAA, CAMTS, company, and customer requirements.
Required Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:

  • First Class Medical Certificate
  • Minimum 2,000 total flight hours
  • Minimum 1,500 helicopter hours
