DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Flight Medicine Provider
LOCATION: Davis-Monthan Air Force Base - Tucson, AZ 85756
HOURS: Monday through Friday - 9-hour shifts including 1-hour unpaid meal breaks between the hours of 6am to 6pm
SUMMARY:
Provide flight medicine services to military members, their families and retirees at a Military Treatment Facility.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Successful completion of an accredited Aerospace Medicine Residency and served as an Air Force Chief of Aerospace is preferred but physicians having served in a flight medicine billet for at least 1 year may be acceptable if approved by the Chief of Aerospace Medicine. Other DOD and civilian trained Flight Surgeons may be considered but require Chief of Aerospace Medicine approval.
  • Current board certification by one of the following boards: Aerospace Medicine Board, the American Board of Family Medicine, American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, American Board of Preventive Medicine, or board certified by the American Osteopathic Association through the American Osteopathic Board of Preventive Medicine or General Medical Officers with at least 1 year of flight medicine clinic experience assigned as a 48X duty AFSC or other branch equivalent will be considered. License cannot be under investigation nor have any adverse action pending from a State Board or national licensing/certification agency
  • Possess a current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Life Support (PALS) in accordance with 355 MDG policies.
  • Working knowledge of computer operations and proficiency in the use of basic word processing, data entry and automated medical records.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primarily responsible for assessing, diagnosing, treatment planning, and behavioral health treatment.
  • Provide appropriate military specific documentation such as (but not limited to) narrative medical summaries for Medical Evaluation Boards and medical profile paperwork.
  • The Chief, Flight Medicine Clinic will make specific duties/patient care assignments. All inpatients will be admitted as per the local MTF instructions.
  • Be capable of adequately diagnosing and treating a wide-range of adult acute and chronic diseases and injuries, including but not limited to, conditions of the:
    • Skin Pulmonary System
    • Head Gastrointestinal System
    • Eyes Musculoskeletal System
    • Ears Genitourinary System
    • Nose Reproductive System
    • Throat Lymphatic System
    • Neck Central Nervous System
    • Cardiovascular System Endocrine System
    • Psychiatric and Behavioral Health
  • Be capable of adequately diagnosing and treating a wide-range of pediatric (ages 2-18) acute and chronic diseases and injuries, including but not limited, to conditions of the:
    • Skin Pulmonary System
    • Head Gastrointestinal System
    • Eyes Musculoskeletal System
    • Ears Genitourinary System
    • Nose Reproductive System
    • Throat Lymphatic System
    • Neck Central Nervous System
    • Cardiovascular System Endocrine System
    • Psychiatric and Behavioral Health
    • Well Child Checks
    • Normal Age-Appropriate Development Assessments
  • Have sufficient experience to be able to adequately perform medical procedures to include, but not limited to the following:
    • Secure and maintain an adequate airway to include endotracheal intubation
    • Cardioversion of life-threatening arrhythmias
    • Simple minor surgical procedures: punch biopsies, excision of skin lesions
    • Simple abscess incision and drainage
    • Nail trephination
    • Sling or swath injuries
    • Lumbar puncture
    • Suture simple laceration
    • Suture removal
    • Cryotherapy
    • Nebulizer treatment
    • Cultures (throat, wound)
    • Remove ocular, nasal and ear foreign bodies
    • Clearing of ears by flush technique
    • Reduce simple dislocations and fractures, when appropriate
    • Bandaging of sprains, minor burns, and minor lacerations
    • Perform venous punctures for lab studies and interpret results
    • Administer intravenous, intramuscular and subcutaneous medications as appropriate
    • Stabilize and evaluate cervical spine injuries as appropriate
    • Splint and stabilize traumatic injuries to extremities
  • Ensure a safe work environment and employee safe work habits.
  • Prepare records and reports as required in support of services rendered in accordance with established procedures.
  • Attend and participate in patient care reports, patient care conferences, team conferences, professional staff conferences and other appropriate professional activities only to the extent that such attendance and participation is relative to his/her assigned cases and/or performance of services as determined by the supervisor.
  • Focus on primary health care requirements. Flight medicine providers may be used to sign Return-To-Fly 1042s, waivers, or fly preventive health assessments only if they meet the qualification criteria listed in the Civilian Flight Medicine Physician Performance Work Statement and approved by the Air Force Medical Operations Agency (AFMOA/SGPF). Flight medicine providers will not fly (as part of their duties), respond to in-flight emergencies, after-hours call or Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT). Flight medicine providers will not participate in exercises beyond the scope of medical care, will not deploy, and will not be utilized as Squadron Medical.

Job responsibilities are subject to change to meet Military Treatment Facility requirements. Additional immunization record, security and background check requirements are also considered as qualifying criteria.
