What is an AI Platform Engineer?

AI Platform Engineers are technology professionals who design, build, and maintain the infrastructure that supports the development, deployment, and scaling of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models. They work closely with data scientists and software engineers to ensure that AI solutions can run efficiently and securely in production environments. Their responsibilities often include managing cloud or on-premises platforms, automating workflows, and implementing best practices for model versioning, monitoring, and resource optimization.

How does an AI Platform Engineer typically collaborate with data scientists and software engineers in a project environment?

AI Platform Engineers often serve as a bridge between data scientists and software engineers, ensuring that machine learning models are seamlessly integrated into scalable, production-ready systems. They work closely with data scientists to understand model requirements and deployment needs, and with software engineers to embed these models within applications and services. This collaboration involves frequent communication, joint troubleshooting, and participation in code reviews to maintain a robust and efficient AI infrastructure.

What is the difference between Ai Platform Engineer vs Data Engineer?

Campminder

Job description

Ideal start timeline: July 2026

Role status: Exempt

Compensation: Our target hiring range is $175,000-$215,000 plus participation in our Annual Bonus Program with eligibility for $12,000 bonus. Actual compensation will be commensurate with experience and skills.

Campminder's Flexible Working Location: Our employees have the option to work 100% remotely within the United States or their choice of days at home and at our office in Boulder, Colorado. We host a variety of all-company hybrid meetings and social events. We require anybody working remotely to have a very reliable, high-speed internet connection.

We know the best people can choose to work anywhere.

Here's a few reasons why 100+ of them choose Campminder:

  • With 20+ years experience of serving the industry through its digital transformation, we're stable, profitable, and have developed a loyal customer base (that continues to grow).
  • We build software for summer camps, an industry that enables meaningful experiences for kids.
  • We work on interesting, ambitious projects that create real value for our clients.
  • We know our team members feel their work has an impact on the organization's purpose.
  • At the same time, we are genuinely committed to work/life balance. Our team members feel they have the flexibility to take time off when needed and feel supported in making use of flexible working arrangements.
  • We invest in emerging technology and cutting-edge leadership and are proud to take an "AI-Enabled" approach in our solutions.
  • We've been listed on Outside Magazine's 50 Best Places to Work for 8 consecutive years for our values-led culture and employee experience.

This role's mission & overview: We are looking for a Senior AI Platform Engineer to join our AI Platform team, which owns AI enablement internally across Campminder, and externally to our customers. As a senior engineer on the team, you will be partnering directly with our executive leadership team to identify the greatest needs for AI enablement and AI tooling across all of Campminder, and then working with teams across the company to co-build AI solutions that improve efficiency and empowerment for those teams. You will also be partnering with our product team to build AI platform solutions that will empower external customers and internal engineers to use agentic coding tools to customize Campminder products. This will be a highly visible role, focused on partnering with stakeholders across the business to bring Campminder at the leading edge of AI enablement and AI platforms.

Candidates should be solid in at least two of the following three areas: AI expertise, AI enablement of technical and non-technical teammates, and building scalable software — with a genuine eagerness to grow in the third.

This is a high-impact, high-autonomy role for someone who thrives on solving hard technical problems that unlock a whole new way of working at Campminder, while being in close collaboration with people across the entire company.

As a Senior AI Engineer on our AI Platform team, you will:

  • Partner with executives to identify areas at Campminder that would benefit most from AI enablement
  • Partner with teams across Campminder to define clear business metrics that you can improve with the help of AI, and then enable teams to build and maintain AI-powered tools that achieve those goals
  • Partner with product to design and build AI platform and harness engineering tooling, that can be used by both internal engineers and external customers to expand on the Campminder platform
  • Design AI best practices across all of Campminder, and build platform functionality to make it easy and automated to follow those best practices
  • Partner with our DevOps team to roll out AI-first development and CI/CD flows, that scale to the needs of high-velocity agentic coding
  • Be a mentor and collaborator for people across all of Campminder, teaching people how to build AI-powered tools that make their lives better and help them be more effective

We think a successful candidate will bring:

  • Hands-on experience building AI-powered tools used by internal teams of varying skill levels and technical backgrounds
  • Experience with RAG, prompt engineering, context engineering, and LLM evals
  • Experience building production AI observability, including prompt/input/output logging, token spend tracking, and regression evaluations
  • Experience extending or building on agentic coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, MCPs, custom agents, skills/plugins) for use in customer-facing development workflows
  • Excellent product judgment about where AI belongs in a product and where deterministic code is the better answer
  • Actively tracks the AI tooling landscape and actively experiments to form informed opinions on what works best for different use cases
  • Experience teaching non-engineers practical, targeted AI adoption
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with executive leadership and individual contributors at any skill level, translating AI concepts appropriately for each audience
  • Exceptional communication skills, with an ability to communicate effectively with executives on AI strategy tied to clear business outcomes
  • Growth mindset, with a desire to constantly learn and improve themselves

Our Interview Process:

  1. 45 min - interview with People & Culture
  2. 60 min - interview with Hiring Manager
  3. Phase 3
    1. 60 min - technical interview with engineering team members
    2. 30 min - cultural interview with engineering team peers
    3. 30 min - peer interview with product and business operations
    4. 30 min - interview with CTO

A few of the benefits we are proud to offer:

  • Robust medical, dental, and vision coverage options with generous employer contributions, plus a $500 employer HSA contribution for HSA-compatible plans
  • Ability to choose where you work - remotely, in the office, or a mix!
  • A variety of resources to support mental health and emotional well-being
  • 12 weeks of 100% paid parental leave for all new parents, including via adoption, surrogacy, and foster care
  • 401(k) with 4% company matching
  • Trust-Based (flexible) PTO (and yes, we use it!)
  • $900/year wellness allowance
  • Company-paid subscriptions, training, and support for using AI professionally and personally. We have a team dedicated to enabling our AI capabilities for our team members and our customers!

We encourage people of all backgrounds to apply:

We're actively taking steps to make sure our culture is inclusive and that our processes and practices promote equity for all, including people of color, people from working-class backgrounds, women, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. We welcome and encourage applications from people with these identities or members of other historically marginalized groups.

Research shows that women and people of color tend not to apply to jobs unless they believe they are 100% qualified and apply to fewer senior-level positions. With that in mind, we encourage you to apply if you're not sure whether you meet our qualifications. We'd love to have the opportunity to consider you!

We encourage applications from parents, parents-to-be, and those responsible for the caretaking of others. We offer paid parental leave for birthing and non-birthing parents (including for adoption, surrogacy, and foster care placement) and paid loss leave to recover from miscarriage or stillbirth. The company's HSA and wellness allowance contributions may be used toward childcare, eldercare, adoption fees, and fertility treatments like IVF, among other expenses.
