Job description

AI & Automation Intern - IP Operations

Hybrid (Remote Considered) | Full-Time Internship | Wayne, PA

At Novocure, we're working to extend the lives of patients battling some of the most aggressive forms of cancer. As part of our Intellectual Property Operations team, you'll have the opportunity to apply emerging AI technologies to real business challenges - building intelligent solutions that connect data, systems, and workflows.

This is a technical internship focused on applied AI, AI agents, automation, and systems integration. While the position sits within our Intellectual Property organization, no prior legal or intellectual property experience is required.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a hands-on IP Operations AI Intern to help us design, build, integrate, test, and improve AI-powered solutions supporting our internal operations.

You'll work directly with the Head of IP Operations on AI agents and automation initiatives that interact with business systems, internal data, documents, and workflows. Some solutions are already underway - your job won't simply be to build something from scratch. You'll also help us understand why an AI system isn't working as expected and determine how to make it better.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys turning ideas into working systems, experimenting with emerging AI technologies, and independently solving technical problems.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Design, build, and improve AI agents and agentic workflows that support real-world business processes
  • Develop and refine Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions using internal documents, data, and knowledge sources
  • Connect AI solutions with existing business applications through APIs, webhooks, databases, and workflow automation tools
  • Help develop integrations between AI solutions and platforms used within IP Operations
  • Test and troubleshoot AI-agent behavior, including hallucinations, context retention, response consistency, retrieval accuracy, and tool/API calling
  • Refine prompts, system instructions, agent logic, and workflows to improve performance and reliability
  • Develop evaluation methods to measure the quality and consistency of AI-generated outputs
  • Implement appropriate safeguards, validation processes, and data privacy considerations
  • Identify technical bottlenecks and creatively troubleshoot issues across AI and data workflows
  • Explore automation opportunities using platforms such as Airtable, Power Automate, n8n, Zapier, Make, or similar technologies
  • Document solutions, technical decisions, and recommendations to support future development
  • Bring new ideas and perspectives to how AI and automation can improve the way we work

ABOUT YOU

You're a builder and problem-solver who enjoys figuring out how systems work - and why they sometimes don't.

You're comfortable being given a problem rather than a step-by-step set of technical instructions. You enjoy experimenting, troubleshooting, researching solutions, and turning ideas into working applications.

You don't need to be an AI expert or graduate-level researcher. We're looking for someone with a strong technical foundation who has already started applying AI technologies through internships, coursework, research, hackathons, or personal projects and is eager to take those skills into a real-world business environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Software Engineering, Engineering, or another related technical field
  • Hands-on programming experience with Python
  • Experience building or contributing to an application involving LLMs, AI agents, RAG, automation, or API integrations
  • Understanding of APIs and how applications exchange and use data
  • Strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently, learn new technologies quickly, and communicate technical ideas effectively

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with one or more of the following is a plus:

  • Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
  • LLM APIs such as OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, or similar
  • Agentic frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, LlamaIndex, AutoGen, or similar
  • REST APIs, webhooks, and third-party system integrations
  • Vector databases, embeddings, or semantic search
  • Prompt engineering and agent orchestration
  • AI testing, evaluation, hallucination detection, or guardrails
  • Workflow automation tools such as Airtable, n8n, Power Automate, Zapier, Make, or similar
  • Software development and data-processing workflows
  • Experience working with technical documents or enterprise data

Experience with Airtable is especially helpful but not required.

No prior legal or intellectual property experience is required for this role.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

By the end of the internship, you will have:

  • Built or meaningfully improved working AI agents and automated workflows
  • Helped connect AI solutions with real business systems and data
  • Improved the accuracy, reliability, and usefulness of existing AI solutions
  • Identified and resolved technical issues affecting agent or workflow performance
  • Helped establish more scalable approaches to AI automation within IP Operations
  • Demonstrated the ability to independently investigate problems, propose solutions, and turn ideas into working technology

HOW YOU'LL WORK

  • Paid internship
  • Full-time internship with ability to work part time during school semester
  • Remote work flexibility
  • Direct collaboration and mentorship from the Head of IP Operations
  • Opportunity to work on AI initiatives that may have applications beyond the IP Operations organization

WHAT YOU'LL GAIN

  • Paid Internship of $25/hr.
  • Hands-on experience building real-world enterprise AI solutions
  • Practical experience with AI agents, RAG, APIs, automation, and systems integration
  • Exposure to the challenges of deploying reliable AI within a regulated healthcare environment
  • Experience working with real business data, documents, applications, and workflows
  • Opportunity to experiment with emerging AI technologies while solving meaningful operational problems
  • Direct mentorship and exposure to how AI can transform business processes
  • Experience working at the intersection of technology, innovation, healthcare, and intellectual property
