What is an AI engineer GIS?

AI Engineer GIS professionals are specialists who combine artificial intelligence (AI) techniques with geographic information systems (GIS) to analyze and interpret spatial data. They develop and implement machine learning models, automate geospatial data processing, and extract insights from maps, satellite images, and geolocated datasets. Their work enables organizations to make data-driven decisions in areas like urban planning, agriculture, environmental monitoring, and logistics. These professionals typically have expertise in programming, data science, geospatial technologies, and AI frameworks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AI engineer GIS?

To thrive as an AI Engineer in GIS, you need a strong background in computer science, machine learning, and geospatial analysis, typically supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with tools such as Python, TensorFlow, ArcGIS, and cloud platforms, as well as certifications in AI or GIS, is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication are critical soft skills for integrating AI solutions into geospatial projects. These skills ensure the development of innovative, accurate, and scalable AI-driven GIS applications that address complex spatial challenges.

How does an AI engineer GIS typically collaborate with other teams to develop geospatial solutions?

AI Engineers in GIS often work closely with data scientists, geospatial analysts, and software developers to design and implement intelligent mapping applications. Collaboration usually involves integrating AI models with GIS platforms, ensuring data accuracy, and optimizing performance for spatial analysis tasks. Regular communication with stakeholders is essential to align technical solutions with project goals, and team members often participate in interdisciplinary meetings to troubleshoot challenges and refine models. This collaborative environment fosters innovation and ensures that solutions are both technically robust and tailored to user needs.

What is the difference between Ai Engineer Gis vs Geospatial Analyst?

AspectAi Engineer GisGeospatial Analyst

Description
JSI invites you to join our team as a Manager, AI Products & GIS, where you'll play a critical role in advancing broadband and telecommunications initiatives that expand connectivity and drive digital inclusion - while advancing your career within a mission-driven, growth-focused organization.
About the Company:
JSI is a leading full-service consulting firm specializing in broadband solutions. For over 60 years, we have provided independent communications service providers with expert financial, engineering, management, operational, regulatory, and strategic guidance. Our extensive industry knowledge and proven track record of success have empowered clients to achieve sustainable growth and profitability. With clients nationwide and a powerful presence in markets across the United States, JSI empowers rural and regional broadband providers to expand, evolve, and excel in a rapidly shifting digital world.
Position Overview:
The Manager, AI Products & GIS is responsible for developing and delivering AI-enabled products, GIS solutions, and technology-driven workflow improvements that create measurable value for JSI and its clients. Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, this position combines hands-on product development, AI-enabled software development, GIS leadership, and project management.
The Manager will help translate business and technical needs into practical solutions, rapidly develop and test new concepts, and move successful solutions from prototype through production. The role will be a key contributor to JSI's product-development and innovation efforts, with particular emphasis on applying artificial intelligence, automation, software, and geospatial technologies to telecommunications engineering, consulting, managed services, and internal operations.
This is a hands-on technical leadership position intended for someone who can both build solutions and coordinate the people and resources required to deliver them.
Responsibilities
  • Develop AI-enabled applications, tools, and workflow automation using LLMs, APIs, RAG, agentic AI, MCP, and related technologies.
  • Build and test prototypes/MVPs, then scale successful ones into secure, production-ready applications.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership for JSI's GIS technology, data, and workflows, and identify opportunities to automate GIS/broadband engineering processes.
  • Support the CTO in shaping technology strategy into executable product initiatives, including roadmaps and business cases.
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams (developers, GIS professionals, engineers, consultants) and external technology partners/vendors.
  • Ensure applications are well-architected, secure, documented, and supportable.

Qualifications
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, GIS, data science, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of experience in software development, GIS, product development, or related technical disciplines.
  • Experience translating business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Working knowledge of APIs, databases, cloud platforms, and modern application architecture.
  • Experience with GIS platforms, geospatial data, or spatial analysis.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills.

Preferred:
  • Experience with AI-assisted development, LLMs, generative AI, RAG, or AI agents.
  • Proficiency in Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, or SQL.
  • Experience with Esri, ArcGIS, QGIS, PostGIS, or similar.
  • Experience with Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud; Git/CI/CD practices.
  • Background in telecommunications, broadband, or fiber network infrastructure.
  • Product/project management experience taking concepts from MVP to production.

Benefits & Compensation
  • Competitive salary + performance-based bonuses.
  • Comprehensive benefits package (medical, dental, vision, 401(k)).
  • Generous PTO and wellness opportunities.
  • Ongoing professional development and educational opportunities.
