What is an AI Developer Intern?

AI Developer Interns are students or recent graduates who assist in developing artificial intelligence solutions under the supervision of experienced engineers or data scientists. Their responsibilities often include data preprocessing, building and testing machine learning models, writing code, and participating in research or development projects. This internship provides hands-on experience with AI technologies and tools, helping interns gain practical skills for a career in artificial intelligence. Interns typically work with programming languages like Python, and frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an AI Developer Intern typically expect during their internship?

As an AI Developer Intern, you can expect to work on a range of projects such as building prototypes, supporting data pre-processing, and assisting with the development and testing of machine learning models. Interns often collaborate closely with data scientists, engineers, and product teams to integrate AI solutions into real-world applications. You may also be responsible for researching new algorithms, participating in code reviews, and presenting your findings to the team. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to the full AI development lifecycle and enhances your technical and teamwork skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AI Developer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AI Developer Intern, you need a foundational knowledge of programming (especially Python), mathematics, and machine learning concepts, often supported by relevant coursework or project experience. Familiarity with tools like TensorFlow, PyTorch, Jupyter notebooks, and version control systems such as Git is highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help interns collaborate and adapt in dynamic team environments. These skills are crucial for successfully contributing to AI projects and growing technical expertise in a fast-evolving field.

What is the difference between Ai Developer Intern vs Data Scientist Intern?

AspectAi Developer InternData Scientist Intern
Required CredentialsBasic programming skills, coursework in AI/ML, possibly some certificationsStatistics, programming, data analysis coursework, internships
Work EnvironmentTech companies, startups, research labs focusing on AI projectsData analysis teams, research groups, analytics departments
Employer & Industry UsageAI-focused companies, tech giants, startups developing AI productsFinance, healthcare, marketing, and tech firms analyzing data
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding roles in AI development, entry-level AI positionsExploring data analysis roles, entry-level data science positions

While both roles are entry-level and involve working with data and algorithms, an Ai Developer Intern primarily focuses on developing AI models and algorithms, whereas a Data Scientist Intern emphasizes analyzing data to extract insights. The choice depends on your interest in building AI systems versus analyzing data to inform decisions.

How to become an AI Developer Intern?

To become an AI Developer Intern, candidates typically need a strong foundation in programming languages such as Python, knowledge of machine learning frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch, and understanding of algorithms and data structures. Gaining relevant experience through projects, coursework, or certifications in AI and machine learning can improve chances, along with a bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, or related fields. Internships often require applying through company portals or job boards and may have specific prerequisites depending on the organization.

AI Engineer Intern

Location: New York City, SoHo (Fully In-Person)

About Besty AI

Besty AI is the leading AI-native operating system for the $1T+ short‑term‑rental and hotel industry. We’re a venture-backed seed stage startup backed by Ridge Ventures, Armory Squared Ventures, Grand Ventures, and Bungalow Capital.

We’ve raised over $6M from the heads of the Stanford & Berkeley AI labs and investors behind Discord, Fastly, Hugging Face, Covariant, and Replicate.

Besty was founded by a property manager who scaled from 0 to 30 listings in under 10 months, an AI scientist from Yale, and an all-star team of software engineers obsessed with shipping a product loved by hundreds of paying hosts. We’re proud to serve 10,000+ properties worldwide with practical AI applications to make their daily lives easier.

We're looking for an ambitious student ready to take end-to-end ownership, ship production AI, and learn how a fast-growing startup operates.

About the role

  • Work directly with the Head of AI and engineering team
  • Agentic development, LLM orchestration, and prompting experience is a plus
  • Minimum 20 hours per week (hiring both part-time and full-time)
  • We only work in-person at our office in SoHo, Manhattan. No remote candidates

Responsibilities

  • AI Agent Tooling: Develop and maintain internal agentic workflows, function-calling scripts, and custom automations
  • AI System Quality: Help senior engineers build AI-enabled systems through harnessed evaluation frameworks, benchmarking model performance, and debugging production LLM pipelines
  • Special Projects: Contribute to ad hoc initiatives related to AI systems and process improvements

You Might Be a Fit If

  • You're interested in startups and want to be a founder someday
  • You want to learn a lot and get in on the ground floor of a fast-growing AI startup
  • You have strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through
  • You're comfortable working in fast-moving, ambiguous environments with changing priorities
  • You're independent and high-agency

What We Offer

  • Ideal experience to learn a ton about startups and AI product development
  • Ambitious and supportive atmosphere

Next Steps

If you believe you are a strong fit for this role, please submit your application and optionally reach out directly to the hiring manager with a concise overview of your background and interest in the position.
