Aggregate Quality Technician Jobs (NOW HIRING)

Position Summary

The Quality Control Technician is responsible for implementing and maintaining quality assurance methods and procedures to ensure that aggregate products are produced in full conformance with applicable specifications, regulatory requirements, and customer expectations. This position performs laboratory and field testing of aggregate materials produced at quarry and processing operations, monitors production quality, and provides technical support to plant personnel and management.

The Quality Control Technician plays a critical role in maintaining product consistency, supporting operational efficiency, ensuring compliance with state DOT and industry specifications, and protecting the company's reputation for delivering high-quality construction materials. In addition to quality control responsibilities, this position is expected to support quarry and aggregate production operations through the safe operation of mobile and fixed equipment as directed. Equipment operation duties may be performed during periods when quality control activities have been completed or when operational needs require additional support.

This position is primarily focused on aggregate quality control and testing; however, successful candidates must be willing and able to support production operations through the safe operation of heavy equipment as business needs require. The incumbent should expect to divide time between laboratory testing, field quality control activities, and operational support functions to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the quarry and aggregate production facilities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The following duties are considered essential functions of this position. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Performs aggregate testing in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, state DOT, and company quality control standards.

2. Collects representative samples from stockpiles, conveyors, processing equipment, haul trucks, railcars, and customer locations to evaluate product compliance.

3. Conducts laboratory and field testing including gradation analysis, moisture content, specific gravity, absorption, fractured faces, flat and elongated particles, Los Angeles Abrasion, Micro-Deval, soundness, sand equivalent, and other required aggregate quality tests.

4. Monitors production processes and product quality throughout crushing, screening, washing, and stockpiling operations to ensure specification compliance.

5. Performs routine inspections of stockpiles and material handling practices to identify and prevent contamination, segregation, and product degradation.

6. Maintains quality control test schedules and performs daily testing of production materials to verify compliance with customer and regulatory requirements.

7. Selects, prepares, and submits samples requiring third-party laboratory testing or certification and tracks results to completion.

8. Investigates quality-related concerns and customer complaints by evaluating test data, production records, plant conditions, and field performance; identifies root causes and recommends corrective actions.

9. Provides technical guidance and support to plant managers, supervisors, equipment operators, and production personnel regarding quality standards, product specifications, and material performance.

10. Maintains accurate and timely records of testing activities, certifications, calibration logs, inspections, corrective actions, and quality reports in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.

11. Monitors laboratory equipment for proper operation and performs routine maintenance, calibration, and verification of testing instruments.

12. Assists in evaluating new material sources, production methods, and process improvements designed to enhance product quality and operational efficiency.

13. Maintains laboratory, testing equipment, vehicles, and work areas in a safe, clean, organized condition.

14. Safely operates quarry and plant equipment, including but not limited to front-end loaders, haul trucks, excavators, skid steers, water trucks, dozers, or other assigned mobile equipment, to support production, stockpile management, material handling, housekeeping, and operational activities when quality control duties have been completed or business needs require additional operational support.

15. Conducts pre-operational inspections of assigned equipment, reports maintenance or safety concerns, and complies with all company safety policies, operating procedures, and MSHA requirements.

16. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

1. Current, valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

2. Aggregate Technician certification(s) applicable to the operating region, or the ability to obtain required certifications within one year of hire.

3. Demonstrated ability to perform aggregate testing in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, DOT, and company standards.

4. Effective interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to interact professionally with customers, inspectors, regulatory agencies, and internal stakeholders.

5. Ability and willingness to work up to 65 hours per week and on Saturdays as operational needs require.

6. Ability to travel independently among quarry, plant, and customer locations on a regular basis.

7. Ability to safely work around quarry operations, heavy equipment, crushing and screening plants, and elevated work areas.

8. Ability to safely operate, or successfully complete training to operate, mobile heavy equipment used in quarry and aggregate production operations.

9. Ability to obtain company qualification and authorization to operate assigned equipment in accordance with company safety standards and MSHA requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Prior experience in aggregate production, quarry operations, mining, construction materials testing, or quality assurance.

2. State DOT Aggregate Technician certification or equivalent industry certification.

3. Working knowledge of ASTM, AASHTO, and state transportation specifications relating to aggregates.

4. Previous experience operating loaders, haul trucks, excavators, skid steers, water trucks, crushers, screens, or other aggregate production equipment.

5. Experience working in quarry, mining, aggregate, or heavy construction environments.

6. Experience with quality management software, laboratory information systems, or aggregate quality databases.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent required, with demonstrated mathematical competency. An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position will also be considered.

Associate degree or technical training in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Materials, Geology, Mining Technology, or a related field is preferred.

The incumbent regularly works in quarry, processing plant, stockpile, and customer project environments and is subject to varying weather and temperature conditions.

✔ Indoor Laboratory Setting

A portion of work is performed in a laboratory environment utilizing aggregate testing equipment, scales, ovens, sieves, and related instruments.

✔ Exposure to Dust and Particulates

Regular exposure to airborne dust, crushed stone, sand, and aggregate materials is expected in both field and plant settings.

✔ Exposure to Heavy Equipment

The incumbent routinely works around haul trucks, loaders, crushers, screens, conveyors, and other quarry equipment; strict adherence to all safety procedures is required.

✔ Mobile Equipment Operation

The incumbent may regularly operate mobile equipment in active quarry and production environments and is required to maintain constant awareness of personnel, traffic patterns, changing site conditions, and operating hazards while performing assigned duties.

✔ Uneven Terrain

Field assignments frequently involve walking and working on uneven ground, active stockpiles, quarry benches, plant surfaces, and construction sites.
