Agentic Developers information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an agentic developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Agentic Developer, you need a solid background in software engineering, AI/ML concepts, and agent-based systems, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with frameworks such as LangChain, OpenAI APIs, and experience with cloud platforms and workflow orchestration tools are typically expected. Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this emerging field. These competencies enable Agentic Developers to design, build, and manage intelligent, autonomous agents that deliver innovative solutions and adapt to complex real-world tasks.

What is the difference between Agentic Developers vs Software Engineers?

Search & Comparison IntentYesYes

Agentic Developers and Software Engineers share similar credentials and work environments, often overlapping in tech companies and startups. However, Agentic Developers typically emphasize a proactive, autonomous approach to project execution, whereas Software Engineers focus more on designing, coding, and maintaining software solutions. Understanding these distinctions helps employers and job seekers align expectations and roles effectively.

How do agentic developers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement autonomous systems?

Agentic Developers often work closely with data scientists, UX/UI designers, and product managers to build and integrate autonomous agents within larger software systems. Collaboration usually involves regular sprint meetings, sharing progress on task automation, and aligning system behaviors with user and business requirements. This multidisciplinary teamwork ensures that agentic solutions are robust, user-friendly, and aligned with organizational goals. Open communication and a willingness to iterate on feedback are key to success in this role.

What is an agentic developer?

Agentic developers are software professionals who design, build, or work with systems that exhibit agency—meaning the system can make autonomous decisions and take actions to achieve specific goals. These developers often focus on creating advanced AI agents, multi-agent systems, or applications that integrate autonomous behaviors. Their work typically involves a mix of programming, machine learning, and system design to enable intelligent, proactive software. Agentic developers are increasingly in demand as AI-driven applications become more common across industries.

Job description

Define arrivia's multi-year vision for agentic engineering, and how we build, ship, and operate software at scale.

As a Principal Agentic Software Engineer, you are our foremost technical authority on agentic software development, a product-minded, full-stack engineer who defines how AI coding agents reshape the way we build and operate software at scale. Operating with full autonomy and company-wide scope, you set the multi-year technical vision and the engineering standards teams follow.

This role sets the technology direction behind arrivia, a leader in travel loyalty, membership, and cruise solutions, powering travel for millions of members.

You will make the highest-stakes architectural decisions that determine our competitive trajectory, and you will be the driving force behind our agentic engineering strategy, evaluating frontier models, designing human-agent collaboration patterns, and evolving our engineering culture.

You will partner directly with VP-level leadership to align technical strategy with business goals, represent arrivia's engineering externally, and serve as the final technical escalation point for our most complex challenges.

What You'll Own

  • Own the technical vision: Define and own the multi-year technical vision and architecture for our travel platform, aligned with product and business strategy.
  • Lead agentic strategy: Set the direction for how AI coding agents are adopted, governed, and optimized across all engineering teams.
  • Make the biggest calls: Make the highest-impact architecture and technology investment decisions, weighing scalability, reliability, security, cost, and speed with company-wide consequences.
  • Design the agentic framework: Evolve prompt libraries, MCP server ecosystems, agent governance, and quality gates for AI-generated code that set the standard for the whole organization.
  • Architect enterprise MCP: Define how AI agents securely interact with internal APIs, databases, infrastructure, and third-party services across the full lifecycle.
  • Evaluate the frontier: Assess frontier AI models and emerging frameworks, making build-vs-buy-vs-integrate recommendations that shape the roadmap.
  • Lead complex initiatives: Lead the most complex cross-cutting technical efforts across teams and domains, from concept through production.
  • Drive modernization: Define migration paths and patterns that transform legacy systems into scalable, cloud-native, agent-ready services.
  • Set reliability standards: Establish SLO frameworks and operational excellence practices that protect the platform through rapid growth.
  • Safeguard trust and governance: Define security architecture and partner with Risk, Security, and Compliance on AI governance and responsible-use policies.
  • Grow engineering leaders: Mentor senior and staff engineers and build the next generation of technical leadership.

What You'll Bring

  • 12+ years of full-stack development and architectural experience, with a track record of company-wide technical leadership.
  • Expert-level proficiency using AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot, with a track record of defining organizational adoption strategies.
  • Mastery of two or more of TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, or C#/.NET.
  • Deep expertise in modern web applications, RESTful API design, distributed systems, and microservices at scale.
  • A proven track record architecting enterprise-scale cloud-native solutions on AWS, Azure, or GCP, including multi-region and hybrid deployments.
  • Deep expertise in the Model Context Protocol (MCP), including enterprise MCP server architectures with secure, governed agent access.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and advanced CI/CD, including progressive delivery and feature flags.
  • A track record of developing engineering leaders and elevating an entire organization's technical capability.
  • Exceptional communication skills, translating complex technical concepts for executive, product, and business audiences.
  • An advanced degree is a plus, not a requirement. Demonstrated impact and depth of knowledge matter most.

Benefits & Perks

  • Unlimited PTO
  • Exclusive employee travel rates
  • Travel discounts through arrivia programs
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company participation
