Job description

KaneComm is a multi-jurisdictional dispatch center responsible for the dispatch services for eight police departments, seven fire departments, Kane County Court Services, and the Kane County Office of Emergency Management. In 2025, KaneComm answered 119,189 emergency and non-emergency telephone calls and dispatched 96,135 calls for service.
As a 9-1-1 Telecommunicator, you will be the critical first point of contact for citizens requesting emergency assistance. This fast-paced position is responsible for answering 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls, gathering and documenting critical information, dispatching police, fire, and EMS personnel, monitoring radio communications and providing pre-arrival medical (EMD) instructions when needed.
Key Responsibilities
  • Answer and process emergency and non-emergency calls
  • Dispatch police, fire, and EMS units using a Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system
  • Monitor multiple radio channels and talk groups and maintain communications with fire and police personnel
  • Accurately document incident information and provide timely updates
  • Provide pre-arrival medical instructions in accordance with established protocols
  • Work effectively in a high-stress, team-oriented environment while maintaining professionalism,

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years of age at the time of hire
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to type 35 words per minute or greater
  • Successfully complete the hiring process, including applicant testing, oral interview, background investigation, psychological examination, physical examination, and drug screening.
  • Ability to obtain all required certifications during the training process.

KaneComm is a 24 hour, 7 days a week operation and all applicants must have the ability to work days, afternoons, midnights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.

Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment; stamina to remain seated for extended periods of time; strength to lift and carry up to 10 pounds; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person, over the telephone and over the radio. Work is performed in a high call volume emergency dispatch environment, where there is limited opportunity for physical movement and the dispatcher must remain alert and responsive while observing computer display screen for uninterrupted periods of time; may be subject to extended work periods without relief, periods of high call volume, and stressful situations.
