Data & Solutions Engineer

Location: Hybrid - Salt Lake City, Utah

We are seeking a Data and Solutions Engineer to join our growing technology team. The role brings together three responsibilities:

• Hands-on development across the core systems that run our business,

• Ownership of the data those systems depend on,

• Partnership with the executive team to define, design, and improve the solutions our departments rely on every day.

We operate on Salesforce, NetSuite, Avalara, and our proprietary platform, with data moving continuously between them. Salesforce is where much of the work lives, and it is where this role will spend the majority of its development time. Alongside that, we are building out the data foundation those systems share and the integrations that connect them. The engineer we are looking for can write a Flow or an Apex class in the morning, model a data structure or build an integration in the afternoon, and sit with a department lead to understand a business problem in between.

The ideal candidate leans toward building, maintains strong administrative fundamentals, and treats data quality as a discipline they own rather than a cleanup task handed to them. Above all, we are looking for an engineer who works smarter, not harder. AI-assisted development is the operating philosophy of this role. We expect this person to live in tools like Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude, and ChatGPT to accelerate every part of the work, from requirements gathering and solution design to coding, testing, documentation, and user training. Candidates should be able to demonstrate, not just describe, how they have used these tools in production to ship better work in less time.

This role reports to the Director of Business Technology and works alongside a Salesforce developer who is the leasing-business subject-matter expert on the team. Time is expected to split roughly evenly across three areas: development and administration, data engineering and stewardship, and requirements gathering, solution design, and architecture. The balance will shift by project. This position collaborates closely with Sales, Operations, Pricing, Documentation, Accounting, and Tax to translate business needs into practical, scalable solutions that support our continued growth.

Essential Duties:

Development

• Design and build Salesforce solutions using Flows, Apex, and other platform tools, with a focus on scalable, best-practice development.

• Build and maintain applications, scripts, and automations beyond the Salesforce platform where that is the right tool for the problem, including integrations, data shuttles, reporting utilities, and internal tooling.

• Use AI-assisted development tools (Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT, and similar) as a core part of the daily workflow to accelerate coding, code review, refactoring, and debugging.

• Generate, maintain, and run automated tests with AI assistance, accounting for the full business process behind each automation, and help raise and hold Apex test coverage to deployable standards.

• Work within source control and defined deployment practices, using sandbox environments and change gates so that configuration and code changes are built and tested before they reach production.

Data Engineering and Stewardship

• Serve as our data specialist — designing databases, modeling data structures, and defining the canonical fields, naming conventions, and data standards the business runs on.

• Own an ongoing Salesforce data cleanup and remediation program: completeness backfills, record ownership reassignment, stale pipeline and record hygiene, duplicate identification and merge, and report and dashboard rationalization.

• Serve as the standing data steward for the business, establishing recurring hygiene reviews, completion targets, and preventive controls — validation rules, duplicate rules, and automated activity capture — so that data quality holds once it is achieved.

• Build and maintain the data flows and integrations that move information between Salesforce, NetSuite, our proprietary Fleet platform, and downstream systems, and drive the Fleet integration to ensure clean, reliable data in both directions.

• Evaluate, recommend, and where approved build the data layer that supports reporting and integration at scale, including a clear build-versus-buy recommendation on warehouse and synchronization tooling.

• Build and maintain dashboards and reports that give the team and leadership trustworthy visibility into key data and business metrics.

• Support data security and access practices, including field-level security, sharing models, encryption of sensitive fields, and safe handling of production data in lower environments.

Solution Design and Architecture

• Partner with cross-functional teams and department leaders to understand business processes and pain points; gather and document requirements, define scope, and design effective solutions.

• Apply AI tools to requirements gathering and solution design — synthesizing team conversations, drafting user stories, generating solution options, and producing first-pass technical specs.

• Present solution options to the executive team and recommend the best approach, balancing platform best practices with broader system architecture.

• Make and defend build-versus-buy recommendations, including cost, risk, maintainability, and the internal capacity required to support the outcome.

Business Systems and Automation

• Prioritize clearing the current Salesforce backlog, then expand focus into NetSuite and broader data and systems work.

• Own the NetSuite side of the business, including the data shuttles moving data in and out of it.

• Expand use of Avalara to streamline and automate tax reporting and replace manual tax and business license processes with reliable, auditable automation. This is expected to be an early project for this role.

• Identify high-friction manual processes across the company and automate them, including through AI agents and workflow automation where appropriate.

• Continuously evaluate and improve existing workflows and systems to reduce friction and increase efficiency.

Documentation, Support, and Enablement

• Use AI to keep documentation current — configuration notes, data dictionaries and standards, business logic, runbooks, and training materials — without it becoming a separate project.

• Help train and support users on new processes, data standards, and system functionality.

• Communicate clearly and concisely with the team.

• Other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:

• 4+ years of hands-on development and administration experience across business systems, including strong Salesforce proficiency with Flows and Apex. We will consider an exceptional candidate with less experience who can demonstrate unusual range and throughput, particularly through AI-assisted development.

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, or a related field, or combined experience with education.

• Demonstrated data engineering capability: data modeling, database design, SQL, ETL or integration work, and data quality remediation at scale.

• Candidates should be able to describe a data set they cleaned up, the standards they put in place, and how they kept it clean afterward.

• Demonstrable, daily use of AI-assisted development tools (Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT, or equivalents) in a production setting. Candidates should be able to walk through specific examples of how they have used these tools to ship higher-quality work faster.

• Solid understanding of the Salesforce data model, security, and permissions. No direct ownership of user setup is required.

• Experience integrating systems through APIs and building or maintaining data pipelines between platforms.

• Development experience beyond the Salesforce platform — for example Python, JavaScript, or a comparable general-purpose language — and comfort working in source control.

• Proven ability to gather requirements and contribute to solution architecture.

• Strong quality assurance and test automation skills, with the ability to factor the surrounding business process into test design.

• Experience working with executive team members across multiple departments to translate business needs into system solutions.

• Salesforce Administrator and Platform Developer I certifications preferred; Platform Developer II a plus.

• Exposure to ERP or financial systems, ideally NetSuite, and to tax automation platforms such as Avalara is a plus.

• Experience in financial services, equipment leasing, or a related B2B industry is a plus but not required.

• Adherence to laws and best practices regarding dealings with financial service customers and data.
