What does an after school science tutor do?

An After School Science Tutor helps students understand and excel in science subjects outside of regular class hours. They provide personalized instruction, assist with homework, reinforce classroom learning, and often prepare engaging experiments or activities to make science fun. Their goal is to improve students’ comprehension, boost their confidence in science, and support their academic achievement.

How to become an after school science tutor?

To become an after school science tutor, typically you need a strong understanding of science subjects, often demonstrated through relevant coursework or a degree. Many tutors gain experience by volunteering or working with students, and some certifications in tutoring or education can enhance credibility. Good communication skills and patience are essential for working with students in an after school setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an after school science tutor, and why are they important?

To excel as an After School Science Tutor, you need a solid understanding of science subjects, experience in tutoring or teaching, and at least a bachelor's degree in a related field. Familiarity with digital learning platforms, interactive teaching tools, and curriculum materials is highly beneficial. Strong communication, patience, and the ability to motivate and engage students are essential soft skills. These qualifications and abilities are crucial for effectively supporting students’ learning, fostering curiosity, and improving academic outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced by after school science tutors, and how can they be effectively managed?

After School Science Tutors often encounter challenges such as varying student engagement levels, limited resources, and balancing diverse learning needs within a group setting. To manage these, tutors can employ interactive hands-on activities, tailor lessons to different learning styles, and foster a supportive, inclusive environment. Effective communication with parents and school staff also helps in addressing specific student needs and tracking progress. Building rapport and continuously adapting instructional strategies are key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring student success.

Job description

MATCHBOOK LEARNING

Middle School Science Teacher
Middle School - Departmentalized Science, Grade TBD (6, 7, or 8)
1 Position Available | Salary Range: $51,500 - $83,000 | Full-Time
Our Vision
At Matchbook Learning, our vision is simple: every child is known, loved, and flourishing. We are a tuition-free public charter school proudly rooted in the Haughville neighborhood of Indianapolis, serving K-8 students at Wendell Phillips School 63. Our students come with high needs and extraordinary potential - and our staff shows up every day to meet both.
Half of our student population are Multilingual Learners. We serve students with a wide range of learning needs and we are proud to be in this community. You will be surrounded by a visible, supportive administration, a strong instructional coaching team, a dedicated MLL director, a large restorative team, and colleagues who put kids first.
About This Role
We are seeking a Middle School Science Teacher to join our departmentalized middle school team, assigned to one grade level - either 6th, 7th, or 8th grade - determined collaboratively based on the candidate's strengths and best fit. This is a content-focused role for someone who knows science - or is strong enough in science to be coached to teach it exceptionally well.
You do not need years of classroom experience. What you do need is solid science content knowledge, the ability to internalize the provided curriculum, and a genuine willingness to be coached on delivery. Elevate Science is our primary curriculum and you will be fully equipped to teach it. Our students gained 13 percentile points in science growth last year. You will help continue that trajectory.
Key Responsibilities
  • Teach science to one assigned middle school grade level (6th, 7th, or 8th - placement determined collaboratively based on best fit)
  • Deliver instruction using Elevate Science curriculum with 100% fidelity - all materials are provided
  • Use IXL data to inform daily and weekly instruction
  • Participate in weekly/bi-weekly data cycles - always know exactly where students are and what they need next
  • Implement SIOP-aligned strategies to support Multilingual Learners in all science instruction
  • Conduct student conferencing to build individual relationships and academic accountability
  • Maintain a structured, high-expectation classroom environment using PBIS systems
  • Actively participate in coaching cycles, walkthroughs, and professional development
  • Communicate proactively with families about student progress
  • Collaborate with flex teachers, instructional coaches, and school leadership to support student growth

Qualifications
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree - a background in science, engineering, or a quantitative field is strongly preferred
  • Strong science content knowledge at the middle school level
  • Valid Indiana teaching license OR enrolled in / willing to enroll in a state-approved transition-to-teaching program
  • Genuine growth mindset and openness to coaching and instructional feedback
  • Commitment to high expectations for all students, including students with high needs

Preferred:
  • Prior experience teaching or tutoring science at the middle or high school level
  • Familiarity with Elevate Science and IXL, or similar platforms
  • Experience working with Multilingual Learners or students with learning differences
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus

Professional Development & Support
Matchbook Learning invests deeply in its teachers. Our professional development is intentional, ongoing, and directly connected to what happens in classrooms every day. You will receive:
  • Weekly or bi-weekly data cycles - every teacher always knows exactly where students are and what comes next
  • Structured coaching and feedback from instructional coaches and a highly visible administration
  • SIOP-aligned training to effectively teach and support our large Multilingual Learner population
  • Robust bilingual support throughout the school - bilingual staff, resources, and systems to fully serve our Spanish-speaking students and families
  • Classroom management systems, PBIS support, and positive behavior reinforcement frameworks
  • Student conferencing structures - building authentic relationships with every student
  • Morning circle coaching and support (K-8) launching 2026-2027
  • PGP credits available for license renewal
  • Full support for educators enrolled in, or willing to enroll in, a state-approved transition-to-teaching program

You will not go it alone. Our leadership and support structure includes:
  • Assistant Principal of Academics & Tier 1 Instructional Systems
  • Assistant Principal of Student Supports & Tier 3 Behavior
  • Two School Counselors
  • Director of Competency-Based Learning
  • Data & Assessment Coordinator
  • Dean of Students
  • Dedicated Restorative Team
  • MLL Director with dedicated ongoing language support
  • Large bilingual staff throughout the building - a genuinely welcoming environment for Spanish-speaking students and families
  • Engagement & Events Coordinator
  • Instructional Coaches embedded throughout the school
  • Two MLL Academic Specialists providing push-in support for Multilingual Learners
  • Special Education Coordinator and a large, dedicated Special Education team
  • Instructional Assistant dedicated to producing and collecting materials for teachers

A Whole-Child School
All students K-8 at Matchbook Learning receive Music, Physical Education, PLTW (Project Lead The Way), and College & Career Readiness classes as part of their school day. Our students graduate eighth grade having already chosen a career pathway - entering high school with purpose, direction, and skills ready for today's workforce.
What We Offer
• $51,500 starting salary for new teachers
• PGP credits for license renewal
• 5% 401(k) match - dollar for dollar, vested at 90 days
• 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM school day
