Job description

Puente del Pueblo After School Elementary Teacher - 3rd/4th Grade
Status: Part-time, hourly, 18-20 hours per week (Monday-Friday, 2:00-6:00 PM) while school is in session
Wheaton Bible Church is seeking someone with a heart to serve the residents of the Timberlake Apartments and to build into children there in a way that will impact their futures. This part-time Elementary Teacher for the after-school program of Puente del Pueblo at Wegner Elementary School will be responsible for building relationships with students, academic tutoring, life skills instruction, and teaching Christian education. This person will facilitate group work with students involving experiential learning, as well as plan and implement community service activities, communicate with parents, and coach volunteers. The teacher is also responsible for maintaining Puente’s standard of classroom behavior during program time.
Responsibilities
Academic Oversight
  1. Facilitate learning in a class of up to 15-20 elementary age students in a daily after-school program including homework completion, academic enrichment and skill building, and life skills.
  2. Assess and monitor student progress at regular intervals with Elementary Program Coordinator.
  3. Develop and enforce standards for behavior management for your classroom in accordance with Puente’s behavior management plan.
  4. Support, encourage and resource the volunteer tutors working with your students so that they grow in effectiveness.
  5. Facilitate and oversee daily recreational activities (in the gym and outside) for students, with attention to behavior management; equip volunteer gym helpers.
Other Program Duties
  1. Supervise and monitor Northern Illinois Food Bank snack delivery and distribution in accordance with NIFB training.
  2. Contribute to the planning and implementation of two program-wide events each year (Christmas and Graduation Celebrations).
  3. Participate in the planning and improvement process as needed, contributing feedback to improve program effectiveness.
  4. Complete all required paperwork.
  5. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements
  1. Bachelor’s degree in elementary education or a related field.
  2. Previous classroom teaching or group experience with early elementary age students.
  3. Passion for working with elementary-age students.
  4. Demonstrates personal interest in the academic progress and home life of students.
  5. Sensitivity to the needs of students from low-income, high-risk families and culturally diverse background.
  6. Bilingual in English and Spanish highly preferred.
  7. Well-developed office-based computer skills such as use of Microsoft and Outlook.
  8. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  9. Strong interpersonal skills; team player.
  10. Proven initiative and resourcefulness.
  11. Proven record of outstanding organization and time management skills.
  12. Ability to walk up and down a flight of stairs several times daily.
  13. Ability to carry and transport boxes weighing 20+ pounds daily.
  14. Ability to walk, run, and play with children, including helping students cross the street.
  15. Ability to direct and oversee students’ recreation activity, including outdoors in winter.
  16. Exhibits spiritual giftedness in administration, encouragement and helps.
  17. Willing and able to commit through the end of the academic year (early June).
