What is an AFAA?

An AFAA job typically refers to a fitness professional certified by the Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA). These professionals may work as personal trainers, group fitness instructors, or other fitness-related roles. Their responsibilities include designing workout programs, leading fitness classes, and helping clients achieve their health and fitness goals. Many AFAA-certified professionals work in gyms, studios, or as independent trainers.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an AFAA certified group fitness instructor?

As an AFAA Certified Group Fitness Instructor, your day-to-day responsibilities will include designing well-structured class plans, leading group exercise sessions, and ensuring participant safety by providing proper modifications and coaching correct technique. You'll often prepare music playlists, set up and maintain exercise equipment, and motivate participants to help them achieve their fitness objectives. Additionally, you may spend time interacting with clients before and after classes, gathering feedback, and continuously updating your knowledge on the latest fitness trends. Working closely with gym staff and sometimes collaborating with personal trainers and wellness professionals also forms a key part of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the AFAA position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) Certified Group Fitness Instructor, you need a solid understanding of fitness principles, exercise physiology, and class instruction techniques, typically backed by an AFAA certification and CPR/AED credential. Familiarity with fitness equipment, group exercise formats, and music-mixing systems is essential for effective class delivery. Motivational energy, strong communication, and adaptability are standout soft skills for maintaining participant engagement and managing diverse class dynamics. These skills are crucial for creating safe, dynamic, and enjoyable workout experiences that encourage ongoing participation and achievement of fitness goals.

Are you interested in becoming a personal fitness trainer? BODY20 is a great way to gain entry to the fitness industry.
BODY20 is a new boutique fitness studio offering personal training with FDA-cleared Electric Muscle Stimulation (EMS) technology. One 20 minute workout is equivalent to hours in the gym so you can build muscle and burn calories without the need for heavy weights and impact on the joints.
Our entry level personal trainer roles do not require you to obtain a personal training certification (in fact you'll get discounts if you want to pursue a NASM or AFAA cert), or require previous fitness experience. The main requirement is a friendly disposition, some personal experience with fitness, and passion to help members improve their lives through fitness!
If you want to be at the intersection of fitness and technology and work for a rapidly growing brand on the cutting edge of the market, this may be the exact career opportunity you have been looking for.
Benefits and Perks
  • Your FOCUS is on training members -- you won't need to wander the gym floor soliciting your own book of business
  • Consistent schedule - we schedule you for a shift and our members will book themselves into the timeslots
  • Free Studio Membership
  • Product discounts
  • Fitness casual dress-code
  • Paid company training
  • Significant discounts for NASM & AFAA fitness training certifications
  • Access to a specialized medical plan with low premiums
  • Positive and collaborative work environment
  • Opportunity for promotion and career growth as the studio grows and more studios are opened

Responsibilities
  • Help members and prospective members suit up in our EMS wearables, and guide them through personal training sessions. During the workout, provide encouragement and positive energy, solicit member feedback and adjust EMS device settings as appropriate, and monitor / educate members on correct exercise form
  • Provide a high level of personalized attention to members, adjusting workouts accounting for injuries and goals
  • Document notes on workout progress and member observations to ensure a personalized and consistent experience
  • Prepare member progress reports and deliver progress reports and recommendations
  • Prepare for member appointments by preparing EMS suits and equipment
  • Clean and maintain the studio and equipment
  • Generate referrals by providing world class service and asking the members to bring their friends
  • Administer InBody (Bioelectric Impendence Analysis scale) evaluations
  • Obtain and maintain the required EMS certification - all training provided to you - no out of pocket cost for the EMS certification. The certification is a national EMS certification and may be accepted as continuing education credits for some national fitness certification organizations, making it much easier to maintain your certification there
  • May be called upon to assist with some sales and other activities if the training schedule is not fully booked
  • Essential Physical Requirements -- Must be able to perform all essential physical aspects of the position which may include standing, sitting, running, walking, jumping, squatting, bending, and reaching, as well as pushing, pulling and lifting up to 50 lbs in the course of normal studio operations and/or demonstrate the workouts to members
