What do aerospace engineers do?

Aerospace Engineers manufacture and design aircraft, satellites, missiles, aeronautical and astronautical products and technologies for development, research, defense, and commercial use. They document and evaluate the production of aircraft and aircraft technologies, including commercial and military airplanes, propulsion systems, navigation systems, instrumentation, communication, and thermodynamic and aerodynamic materials used in flight. Aerospace Engineers use highly complex computer systems and software to model, design, evaluate, and simulate parts, products, and vehicles in order to determine if proposals are financially feasible and whether designs will meet regulatory and safety standards. They confer with each other on large-scale projects that require group input, completing a multitude of tasks on a single project through the shared duties of many engineers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an aerospace engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Aerospace Engineer, you need a solid background in aerodynamics, propulsion, materials science, and systems engineering, typically backed by a bachelor's or master's degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools like MATLAB or ANSYS, and industry certifications such as a Professional Engineer (PE) license are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you excel in collaborative and innovative environments. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing safe, efficient, and cutting-edge aerospace systems that meet rigorous industry standards.

What are some common challenges aerospace engineers face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Aerospace engineers often collaborate with professionals from fields like electrical, mechanical, and software engineering, which can present communication and coordination challenges. Navigating different technical languages, aligning project goals, and integrating diverse components require strong teamwork and adaptability. Successful aerospace engineers proactively build cross-functional relationships, participate in regular project meetings, and stay open to feedback to ensure seamless integration of all systems. These collaborative skills are just as essential as technical expertise in bringing complex aerospace projects to completion.

What is the difference between Aerospace Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectAerospace EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in aerospace or aeronautical engineering; often a Professional Engineer (PE) licenseBachelor's in mechanical engineering; PE license optional
Work EnvironmentDesigning aircraft, spacecraft, satellites; working in labs, design offices, and manufacturingDesigning machinery, engines, HVAC systems; working in factories, labs, and offices
Industry UsageAerospace, defense, space explorationAutomotive, manufacturing, energy, robotics
Common Search/ComparisonYesNo

In summary, aerospace engineers specialize in designing and developing aircraft and spacecraft, often requiring specific aerospace credentials and working in specialized environments. Mechanical engineers have a broader focus on machinery and systems across various industries, with more general credentials. The key difference lies in their industry focus and the types of projects they handle.

What kind of jobs do aerospace engineers do?

Aerospace engineers design, develop, and test aircraft, spacecraft, satellites, and missiles. They work on improving aerodynamics, propulsion systems, and materials, often using computer-aided design (CAD) software and adhering to safety and industry standards. Their work can involve research, manufacturing, and testing in laboratories or on production floors.

Job description

PhysicsX is a deepโ€‘tech company with roots in numerical physics and Formula One, dedicated to accelerating hardware innovation at the speed of software.

We are building an AIโ€‘driven simulation software stack for engineering and manufacturing across advanced industries. By enabling highโ€‘fidelity, multiโ€‘physics simulation through AI inference across the entire engineering lifecycle, PhysicsX unlocks new levels of optimization and automation in design, manufacturing, and operations โ€” empowering engineers to push the boundaries of possibility. Our customers include leading innovators in Aerospace & Defense, Materials, Energy, Semiconductors, and Automotive.

Who We're Looking For

You have spent your career inside aerospace and defense โ€” in engineering programs, advanced development, or technical consulting and can hold a substantive conversation with a chief engineer or a VP. You are energized by the challenge of turning a customer relationship into a growing program โ€” identifying what's next, building the coalition to get there, and then delivering it.

You understand how aircraft development, defense acquisition, and advanced manufacturing work: how decisions get made, where the hard problems live, and what matters to both leaders and workingโ€‘level engineers.

You have enough ML and data science depth to lead conversations with potential customers, work with technical experts to scope work, and lead crossโ€‘functional delivery teams. You know the simulation domain well, ideally with handsโ€‘on experience. You communicate clearly and read people well. You are highly selfโ€‘directed: you determine your own priorities and own the followโ€‘through.

You may already have a visible presence in the A&D community โ€” at technical conferences, in professional networks, or through published work. If not, you're building it.

You have 8+ years of experience in A&D in commercial, product, program, or engineering roles.

Note: Due to the nature of our aerospace and defense work, this position is open to US Persons only per applicable U.S. export control laws and regulations (US citizens or Greencard holders).

This Role

This is a highโ€‘profile leadership role in our US Delivery organization โ€” with one foot in business development and one in execution. You will lead business development conversations with engineering and manufacturing leaders at A&D players โ€” and close them. Youโ€™d own the commercial outcomes, the customer relationships, and the delivery results that follow.

In practice, this means:

  • Driving new business development across A&D โ€” proactively identifying and qualifying opportunities through your network, industry events, and via direct engagement with prospective customers
  • Helping to shape our A&D goโ€‘toโ€‘market strategy โ€” events, content, customer references, and relevant capabilities
  • Leading initial proposal and discovery conversations with senior engineering/ manufacturing/ program leaders
  • Leading proposal development and scoping in partnership with commercial stakeholders
  • Leading delivery projects at enterprise customers: establishing and executing technical plans, overseeing teams, and keeping focus on customer outcomes and adoption
  • Owning strategic relationships with senior customer stakeholders, creating and executing account plans, and driving customer retention and footprint expansion
  • Synthesizing customer needs into actionable product feedback; working with the Product team to shape how the PX Platform evolves based on what you see in the field
  • Maintaining a visible presence at major A&D industry events, building PhysicsX's reputation in the domain
  • Traveling to customer sites and industry events, on average 1โ€‘2 weeks per month.

This role is based in New York; hybrid arrangements are possible.
