How much do aeronautical science jobs pay per year?
What is aeronautical science?
What are jobs in aeronautical science?
Aeronautical science encompasses the practical aspects of aviation and aeronautics. Jobs in this field focus on all aspects of the aviation industry. If you have a background in aeronautical science, you have a technical knowledge related to the design and operation of aircraft, the practices governing air safety, and navigation equipment and techniques. Pilots and flight instructors operate aircraft to transport passengers or cargo or teach aspiring pilots how to fly planes. Air traffic controllers manage airplanes during takeoff and landing, and ensure that flying aircraft remain a safe distance apart. Flight engineers design aircraft to meet design and safety requirements and regulatory standards. They may also oversee the production of planes. Aeronautical scientists perform research related to aviation, air safety, and plane design. Aircraft mechanics monitor and repair different types of aircraft.
What are the typical daily responsibilities in aeronautical science?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed in aeronautical science?
What is the difference between Aeronautical Science vs Aerospace Engineering?
| Aspect | Aeronautical Science | Aerospace Engineering |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's in Aeronautical Science or related field | Bachelor's or higher in Aerospace Engineering or related field |
| Work Environment | Aircraft operations, flight training, aviation industry | Aircraft design, spacecraft, research labs |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Airlines, flight schools, aviation agencies | NASA, aerospace firms, defense contractors |
While both fields focus on aircraft and flight, Aeronautical Science primarily prepares students for careers in aviation operations and flight training, whereas Aerospace Engineering emphasizes the design and development of aircraft and spacecraft. The choice depends on whether you want to work in aviation services or in designing cutting-edge aerospace technology.

We seek an accomplished scholar with an active research program that aligns with the mission of the FAA Center of Excellence for UAS (ASSURE)-a national coalition dedicated to advancing the safe integration of UAS into the U.S. National Airspace System, which includes TWU as the newest member.
This faculty member will play a key role in advancing AAM and UAS research, mentoring students, and collaborating with industry and government partners to address critical challenges in UAS safety, operations, policy, and technology development. The ideal candidate will have a strong record of research funding, publications, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Key Responsibilities

- Establish and maintain collaborations with government agencies (FAA, NASA, DoD), industry leaders, and academic partners.
- Engage in curriculum development and contribute to the continuous improvement of UAS and aeronautical science programs at TWU.
- Serve on university, departmental, and professional committees and contribute to outreach initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
- A Ph.D. in Aeronautical Science, Aerospace Engineering, Unmanned Systems, Aviation Technology, or a closely related field.
- A strong record of externally funded research and peer-reviewed publications in UAS operations, policy, safety, autonomy, human factors, or related areas.
- Experience with FAA regulations, airspace integration, and emerging UAS technologies.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentorship at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with academic, industry, and government stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- MS or BS in Engineering from ABET-accredited program.
- Active participation in ASSURE or other FAA/Industry-based UAS research initiatives.
- Expertise in UAS risk assessment, detect-and-avoid technologies, AI in aviation, or advanced UAS operations.
- FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate and experience with UAS flight testing.
- Experience in interdisciplinary research and securing competitive research grants.
Why Join Us?
- Cutting-Edge Research: Be part of a growing research program and collaborate with ASSURE, the FAA, and top-tier universities.
