What is an advanced practice respiratory therapist?

An Advanced Practice Respiratory Therapist (APRT) is a highly trained healthcare professional who specializes in advanced assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with respiratory and cardiopulmonary disorders. APRTs hold advanced degrees and certifications that allow them to perform tasks beyond those of a standard respiratory therapist, such as ordering diagnostic tests, prescribing therapies, and collaborating with physicians on patient care plans. Their role is expanding in many healthcare settings to improve patient outcomes, particularly for those with complex respiratory needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an advanced practice respiratory therapist?

To thrive as an Advanced Practice Respiratory Therapist, you need advanced clinical expertise in cardiopulmonary care, strong assessment abilities, and typically a master’s degree or higher along with relevant state licensure and certifications such as RRT-ACCS. Familiarity with mechanical ventilators, pulmonary function testing equipment, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is essential. Key soft skills include critical thinking, leadership, and effective communication for managing complex cases and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills are vital for ensuring high-quality respiratory care, optimizing patient outcomes, and advancing clinical practice in acute and critical care settings.

How does an advanced practice respiratory therapist typically collaborate with physicians and other healthcare team members?

Advanced Practice Respiratory Therapists (APRTs) work closely with physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals to provide comprehensive respiratory care. They often participate in interdisciplinary rounds, contribute to developing patient care plans, and may have expanded responsibilities such as ordering diagnostic tests or initiating therapies. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as APRTs frequently serve as a bridge between patients, families, and the broader care team, ensuring that respiratory interventions are coordinated and evidence-based.

Job description

Practice With Purpose in a Town Where the River Slows Time and the Community Moves With Heart
If you're a board-certified Nurse Practitioner ready to lead care with empathy, expertise, and independence, this is your opportunity to make a lasting impact in a place that truly values your presence. You'll join a team of dedicated providers who believe healthcare should be rooted in compassion, supported by evidence, and centered around the patient. Whether you're managing chronic conditions, delivering preventive care, or offering guidance during a pivotal health moment, you'll be trusted to lead with both skill and heart.
Here, your role goes beyond protocols - it's about building relationships that make people feel heard and cared for. You'll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team that values your input, and you'll have the space to practice at the top of your license, supported by technology, mentorship, and a workplace culture that treats you like the asset you are.
What You'll Be Doing
In this full-time role, you'll conduct comprehensive assessments, order and interpret diagnostics, and develop personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient's goals and lifestyle. You'll manage both acute and chronic health concerns, prescribe medications and therapies, and support your patients in navigating their care plans with confidence. You'll also provide education, preventive services, and ongoing wellness support, all while documenting with precision and staying compliant with best practices and regulatory standards.
Whether you're working alongside physicians or guiding a patient through long-term disease management, you'll bring clarity, kindness, and clinical excellence to every interaction. Your scope may include follow-ups on chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, COPD, and anxiety, or urgent needs like infections, minor injuries, and lifestyle consults. You'll be entrusted to balance autonomy with teamwork-confident enough to lead, collaborative enough to listen.
Beyond direct patient care, your role may include mentoring nursing staff, engaging in community wellness outreach, or contributing to performance improvement initiatives that help elevate the standard of care. You're not just practicing medicine-you're shaping how it's delivered.
Why You'll Love the Team - and the Setting That Grounds You
You'll be joining a healthcare organization that puts people first - starting with our team. Our leadership encourages continuing education, certification reimbursement, and opportunities to explore areas of specialty or leadership. Whether you're refining your clinical scope or stepping into mentorship yourself, you'll be surrounded by colleagues who support your path forward.
You'll be backed by responsive administration, approachable physician partners, and a clinical support team that actually lightens your load. We believe our Nurse Practitioners should be able to focus on patient care, not bureaucracy-and we structure our systems accordingly.
And then there's the town itself - nestled along the Mississippi River, flanked by bluffs, and full of charm that's as natural as the landscape. This southeastern Minnesota gem blends small-town warmth with cultural richness and a deep love for the outdoors. Paddleboard before your shift, walk the river trails at sunset, or catch a weekend festival that brings neighbors together in the park.
You'll find art galleries and theater troupes just blocks from hiking trails and scenic overlooks. Whether you're drawn to bike paths, book clubs, or brunch with friends at a local café, this is the kind of place that lets you breathe - and belong. The cost of living is reasonable, the pace is steady but never stagnant, and the community is engaged in ways that feel genuine and neighborly.
It's a place where healthcare isn't transactional - it's deeply relational. Your work will matter here, and so will you.
Who We're Looking For
You'll need a master's degree in nursing from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, along with an active NP license in Minnesota and national board certification in your specialty (FNP, AGNP, etc.). Prior experience is welcome, but newly certified practitioners with strong clinical instincts and a patient-first approach are encouraged to apply.
You should be confident managing a broad scope of primary care and comfortable adapting to patient needs across the lifespan. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), evidence-based guidelines, and interdisciplinary collaboration is essential.
More than anything, we're looking for someone with clear communication skills, emotional intelligence, and the ability to think critically under pressure. If you love connecting with patients, solving clinical puzzles, and being a stabilizing force within a team-you'll thrive here.
Compensation and Benefits
We offer a competitive salary that reflects your training and experience, along with a comprehensive benefits package that includes:
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Generous PTO, holidays, and sick leave
  • Retirement plan with employer match
  • CME support and licensure reimbursement
  • Short- and long-term disability
  • Life insurance and wellness benefits
  • Relocation assistance, if applicable

Our goal is to make sure your career feels sustainable, satisfying, and aligned with the life you want to live.
Let's Redefine Healthcare in a Place That Redefines Balance
If you're ready to bring your skills to a team that sees you, supports you, and shares your purpose, we'd love to welcome you. Here, you can be part of something larger than yourself - a mission, a community, a shared pursuit of health and connection.
Apply today and be part of a region that gives you space to grow - professionally and personally.
