Job Summary
Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is expanding, offering an exciting opportunity to join a highly collaborative and dynamic critical care team. We are seeking a skilled and motivated Pediatric Acute Care Advanced Practice Professional, to provide comprehensive care to critically ill pediatric patients. This role is ideal for clinicians who thrive in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment and are committed to delivering exceptional, family-centered care.
The PICU Acute Care APP plays a vital role in managing complex patient populations, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and contributing to continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities*
  • Coordinate and manage care of critically ill pediatric patients in the intensive care setting
  • Perform comprehensive histories and physical examinations
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret diagnostic data (labs, imaging, and clinical studies)
  • Order tests and prescribe medications within scope of practice
  • Perform diagnostic, therapeutic, and minor procedures
  • Collaborate with attending physicians and interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement care plans
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation of patient status, evaluations, and treatments
  • Facilitate transfers across levels of care, including discharge planning and coordination
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and departmental projects
  • Promote a collaborative, team-based approach to patient-centered care
Required Qualifications*
Required Qualifications Nurse Practitioner
  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification to practice as an Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
  • AHA approved BLS certification and PALS
  • Current DEA registration required
  • Minimum of 2 years of pediatric acute or critical care clinical experience
Required Qualification Physician Assistant
  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required
  • Current DEA registration required
  • AHA approved BLS certification and PALS
  • Minimum of one year of clinical experience in an acute or critical pediatric care unit, or completion of an accredited pediatric critical care residency or fellowship program.

    *Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
