Position Overview

Build and manage an engineering team focused on providing advanced power system modeling services related to Inverter Based Resources (IBRs) and Large Loads (data centers) to utilities, regional transmission operators, independent system operators, generator owners, generator operators, and other customers. The position requires advanced power system modeling skills, established people management skills, a balance of technical knowledge, collaboration with growth and impact, and the facilitation of communications with the engineering staff supporting model validation, model verification, power flow studies, fault studies, ride-through studies, and North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) compliance simulations.


Essential Functions

People Management

  • Perform supervisory responsibilities associated with the modeling team. May have direct and indirect reports.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources (HR) and Senior Engineering Manager in workforce planning, including the hiring, onboarding, and termination of positions.
  • Manage the ongoing performance of team members through setting long and short-term goals, regular check-ins and annual performance development plans.
  • Identify team member training and development opportunities applicable to role, career path and in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Coach and mentor direct reports.
  • Address and document any performance-related issues involving team members.
  • In collaboration with HR, troubleshoot conflicts and issues that arise with team members.
  • Provide recommendations to Senior Engineering Manager regarding promotions and compensation adjustments for all members of the modeling team.
  • Create training plans and job expectations with 45-day and 90-day milestones for new employees.
  • Ensure employee compliance with Advanced Energy’s policies and procedures and promptly address concerns with employees and HR, as applicable.


Operational Management

  • In collaboration with Senior Engineering Manager, develop operational plans for the modeling team and hold accountability for effectively and efficiently executing operational objectives.
  • Provide recommendations for strategic direction of the modeling team; may provide recommendations for Power Systems Transmission team.
  • Communicate objectives, opportunities, challenges and deliverables to modeling team and management.
  • Develop and implement policies, standards, and procedures for power system modeling.
  • Evaluate work requirements and allocate team members based on available resources and the expertise needed for each of the projects.
  • Coordinate periodic status meetings with team to meet goals and deliverables.
  • Determine need for training, resources, intervention, etc. and make appropriate requests.
  • Recommend and assist with implementation of improvements to processes and procedures for modeling team.
  • Organize and/or participate in collaborative cross-functional meetings.


Financial Management

  • Provide recommendations for financial management of the modeling team.
  • Contribute to annual Advanced Energy budget including matching projected revenues with staffing resources and expenses for modeling team.
  • Approve the purchase of materials and/or services and other expenditures.
  • Analyze technology, resource needs, and market demand to assess the feasibility of projects and make recommendations to Senior Engineering Manager.


Engineering and Project Delivery Support

  • Develop and maintain client relationships.
  • Work in alignment with Growth and Impact to promote business opportunities with both new and repeat clients.
  • Ensure the team and the project teams adhere to project scope, timeline and budget.
  • Serve as a technical lead as needed for power system modeling deliverables.
  • Serve as responsible engineer for work products as needed.
  • Create and conduct workshops and presentations for clients, stakeholders and staff.
  • Develop and maintain own technical and professional knowledge by attending workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
  • Keep up with innovative technologies and standards being deployed relevant to work.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering and 10+ years of experience in power systems modeling, inverter-based resources, generator interconnection, transmission or distribution systems, or related technical work experience, including 2+ years of supervisory experience is required. An equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered.
  • Professional Engineering license or the ability to obtain a Professional Engineering license required
  • Expertise in developing models and model validation [TH1] [ML2] in PSS®E, PSCAD or other modeling tools
  • Expertise in NERC compliance simulations (PRC-029-1 and MOD-026-2) and studies (power flow, reactive power, stability, harmonic, ride-through, fault or other) preferred
  • Knowledge of relevant industry standards, regulations, practices, programs, and power systems modeling software
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service
  • Ability to manage team for results and development of staff
  • Ability to develop and adhere to project budgets
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in teams as well as independently
  • Effective problem solving, organization, time management, and attention to detail
  • Intermediate skill level of Microsoft Office products

Physical Demands/Work Conditions

In this role, the person will hold a valid driver’s license and is expected to travel to IBR facilities, large load facilities and customer meetings from time to time. Some projects may require occasionally travel for periods up to a week. Site visits will require working outdoors in the elements, which could include hot or cold temperatures. The individual must wear personal protective equipment and follow company and/or customer safety protocols.
