What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Advanced Electrical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Advanced Electrical Engineer, you need a deep understanding of electrical theory, circuit design, and problem-solving, typically backed by a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering and relevant work experience. Familiarity with design software such as MATLAB, AutoCAD, and simulation tools, as well as certifications like Professional Engineer (PE), are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this field. These skills ensure precision in complex system development, adherence to safety standards, and successful collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

What is the difference between Advanced Electrical Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectAdvanced Electrical EngineerElectrical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferredBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; PE license optional
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and testing in R&D labs or project sitesDesign, analysis, and maintenance in manufacturing or construction settings
Industry UsageUsed in complex projects requiring advanced technical skillsCommon in general electrical design and maintenance roles

Advanced Electrical Engineers typically hold higher qualifications and work on complex projects requiring specialized skills, whereas Electrical Engineers perform foundational design and maintenance tasks. Both roles are essential in the electrical industry, but the advanced role involves more complex problem-solving and technical expertise.

What are Advanced Electrical Engineers?

Advanced Electrical Engineers are specialized professionals who design, develop, and oversee complex electrical systems and components, often for high-tech industries such as aerospace, automotive, telecommunications, or energy. They apply advanced principles of electrical engineering to innovate and improve products, systems, and processes. These engineers may work on projects involving power distribution, signal processing, electronics, or control systems. Their responsibilities often include research, prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting to ensure the safety, efficiency, and reliability of electrical solutions.

What are some common challenges an Advanced Electrical Engineer might face when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Advanced Electrical Engineers often collaborate with teams from mechanical, software, and systems engineering disciplines. A common challenge is ensuring seamless integration of electrical components with other systems while adhering to project timelines and standards. Effective communication and a solid understanding of adjacent engineering fields are essential for troubleshooting issues and achieving project goals. Working through conflicting requirements and adapting to rapidly changing technology are also typical aspects of the role, making flexibility and problem-solving skills particularly valuable.

Electrical Engineer - Mission Critical

HED is looking to add an experienced team member to our group of talented Electrical Engineers. The Electrical Engineer is a senior technical leader and design leader responsible for shaping high-performance, integrated electrical engineering solutions across complex hyperscale projects in the mission critical sector.

About HED

We are a team that is full of ideas, experience, creativity, passionate opinions, insatiable curiosity, uncompromising integrity, commitment, and skill. Our culture is about aspiration, embracing change and challenges, listening to (and learning from) each other, encouraging continual learning, and inspiring collective growth. As an inclusive, integrated architecture and engineering practice, we value the diversity of perspectives, experiences, abilities, and expertise that advance both the work we do, and the world we share.

Position Summary

This role sets the standard for technical execution, QAQC rigor, and interdisciplinary coordination across the firm. Electrical Engineers at this level operate with full autonomy, own major portions of electrical project design delivery, and mentor cross-functional teams. As trusted advisors, they represent the firm in client relationships, ensure technical excellence, and guide engineering strategy at the highest level. Their work influences practice-wide standards, design innovation, and technical mentorship.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead the engineering design and documentation of large-scale and complex electrical systemsโ€”such as multi-level distribution, emergency power, lighting controls, and low-voltage infrastructureโ€”from concept through construction.
  • Approve and apply advanced electrical calculations (e.g., short circuit analysis, voltage drop, coordination studies) to support system sizing, equipment selection, and performance verification.
  • Direct the setup and refinement of Revit models for electrical scope, including template usage, view strategies, and coordination workflows.
  • Standardize electrical Revit workflows across teams and lead the development of firmwide modeling tools, families, and system templates.
  • Integrate electrical systems across disciplines, resolving coordination challenges with architectural, structural, mechanical, and civil design partners.
  • Serve as the technical lead for electrical coordination with clients, consultants, and internal teams.
  • Lead submittal reviews, RFI responses, and value engineering analysis for electrical scope, ensuring code compliance and performance integrity.
  • Conduct field visits, lead construction observation efforts, and issue high-quality field reports documenting electrical progress and issues.
  • Define electrical system strategies aligned with budget, performance, maintainability, and schedule requirements, influence system decisions early in the design process.
  • Develop and lead QAQC plans for electrical documentation; guide milestone reviews and apply firmwide drafting and modeling standards.
  • Mentor junior engineers and electrical designers, providing real-time coaching, delegation guidance, and professional development support.
  • Develop onboarding content, technical training sessions, and reusable tools that support electrical team development and consistency.
  • Collaborate with project managers and firm leadership on fee development, staffing strategies, and discipline resourcing for electrical work.
  • Lead technical segments of meetings with clients, building officials, and consultants, communicating electrical design direction and resolving complex issues.
  • Guide electrical response strategies to field conditions, code conflicts, and VE proposals with clarity and ownership.
  • Influence client expectations around quality, performance, technical decisions, and lifecycle outcomes of electrical systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in electrical engineering or equivalent required.
  • P.E. licensure required.
  • 15+ years in the AEC Industry preferred.
  • Ability to lead an electrical team in the successful execution of large-scale, complex mission critical projects is required.
  • Experience working with international (offshore) delivery partners is desirable.
  • An understanding of the financial status of projects as they progress, development of cost budgets for projects, value of client relationships and being able to deliver projects with a focus on the quality is required.
  • Written and verbal communication skills commensurate with the position required.
  • Strong organizational skills required.
  • Revit experience required.
  • Experience with computers, specifically for word processing, spreadsheet use/creation and email required.
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, enthusiastic, flexible and curious personalities required.
  • Ability to work well with others under deadline situations required.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to visit project sites, observe existing conditions and/or construction progress.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in writing and verbally via phone, video conferencing, and in-person.
  • Visual acuity to perform responsibilities.

Work Environment

  • We embrace a hybrid model that promotes both autonomy and collaboration, including the freedom to work from home, with regular in-office days to connect with teammates and build culture.
  • The office is a professional, open-space environment for collaborative and independent work.
