Job Summary

The Senior Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible for leading and managing environmental compliance programs with a strong focus on battery management, stormwater compliance, hazardous waste and materials handling, and regulatory adherence. This role ensures the organization maintains full compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations while promoting sustainable and safe operational practices. The position requires advanced technical knowledge, regulatory expertise, and the ability to independently manage complex environmental programs. This position is in Livonia, MI.
As a Senior EHS Specialist, you will:

  • Ensure all sites are adhering to all federal, state, and local regulations in relation to environmental, health and safety concerns. Coordinate with assigned site management for regular touchpoints regarding safety and environmental concerns (audit results, injuries, incidents/accidents, root cause analysis, etc.)
  • Manage and maintain environmental permits and certifications for applicable sites.
  • Routine EHS audits of sites to maintain compliance. Track metrics, recommend process improvements and collaborate with operations to implement changes.
  • Develop and monitor hazardous materials inventory management and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) compliance.
  • Ensure assigned sites have up to date training (e.g., PIT, LOTO, Crane etc.)
  • Coordinate with other EHS peers on enterprise-wide safety and environmental concerns (injury trends, outstanding issues, upcoming regulatory compliance, required training, etc.)
  • Regular site EHS audits (Building safety walks, outside storage audits, SQG storage, stormwater site audits, etc.)
  • Manage lifecycle compliance for all battery types including lithium-ion, lead-acid, and universal waste batteries. Develop and maintain battery recycling and sustainability initiatives.
  • Oversee hazardous waste determinations, characterization, storage, disposal, land disposal restriction documentation, and vendor selection for proper hazardous waste disposal.

To be considered a Senior EHS Specialist, you will need:

  • High school diploma
  • 8 years of environmental compliance experience in manufacturing, industrial, energy, recycling, or related environments.
  • Strong experience managing battery programs, hazardous waste, and stormwater compliance.
  • Experience interacting with regulatory agencies and managing inspections.
  • Expert-level knowledge of federal, state, and local EHS regulations and industry best practices. In-depth knowledge of RCRA, CWA, CAA, and state environmental regulations.
  • Strong understanding of hazardous waste characterization and universal waste rules.
  • Experience with SWPPP and NPDES permit compliance.
  • Proven experience leading audits, regulatory inspections, and enterprise-wide initiatives and able to conduct them independently.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including executive-level reporting.
  • Ability to develop and implement long-term EHS strategies and risk mitigation plans.

A successful candidate may also have:

  • Bachelors degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.
  • OSHA 30-hour certification preferred.
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification
