Advanced Application Developer information

What is an advanced application developer?

An Advanced Application Developer is a professional who designs, builds, tests, and maintains complex software applications, often using advanced programming languages and frameworks. They typically work on larger or more challenging projects, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and may be responsible for the entire software development lifecycle. In addition to coding, they focus on optimizing performance, implementing best practices, and ensuring security and scalability. Advanced Application Developers are expected to have strong problem-solving skills and stay current with emerging technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an advanced application developer?

To thrive as an Advanced Application Developer, you need expertise in programming languages (such as Java, C#, or Python), strong problem-solving abilities, and a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with development frameworks, version control systems (like Git), and experience with cloud computing platforms or relevant certifications are often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability help developers collaborate with stakeholders and respond to evolving project needs. These skills ensure efficient, scalable, and high-quality software solutions that meet business objectives.

How does an advanced application developer typically collaborate with other team members during a project lifecycle?

Advanced Application Developers work closely with cross-functional teams, including project managers, UX/UI designers, QA engineers, and other developers. They participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, and sprint planning sessions to ensure that solutions meet both technical and business requirements. Effective communication and collaboration are essential, as they often mentor junior developers and coordinate with stakeholders to address project complexities. This collaborative environment supports both individual growth and the delivery of high-quality software.

Job description

About the Role At Uber, we don't just use tools; we build the engines that power global movement. As an Application Developer for Work Management, you are at the heart of our productivity, designing and building the Atlassian-based systems that keep thousands of Uber employees aligned and moving fast.
This isn't just about managing Jira tickets-it's about engineering intelligent, integrated ecosystems. The pace here is intense, the systems are massive, and the stakes are high. You'll navigate complex technical debt and architect solutions for problems that don't have a playbook. We need a systems-level thinker with the grit to dive into enterprise-scale configurations and the curiosity to leverage GenAI and Rovo Agents to redefine what's possible. If you stay calm under pressure and care deeply about building tools that actually work at scale, this is where you'll thrive.
What You'll Do
  • Build and Scale: Design and optimize Jira and Confluence environments that support how our teams move in the real world-where performance and reliability are non-negotiable.
  • Develop Custom Solutions: Build secure, scalable cloud applications directly within the Atlassian ecosystem, where your hands-on experience with Atlassian Forge app development and the Forge platform will be a distinct advantage.
  • Navigate Complexity: Solve messy, high-impact problems across the Atlassian toolchain (Structure, JEMH, EazyBI, ScriptRunner) when the playbook doesn't exist.
  • Automate the Future: Build and maintain AI-powered applications and Atlassian Rovo Agents to automate workflows and eliminate manual friction.
  • Integrate Deeply: Develop robust integrations using Atlassian REST and GraphQL APIs, ensuring seamless data flow across our global tech stack.
  • Own the Outcome: Drive projects end-to-end-from initial requirement gathering with stakeholders to debugging production issues when the stakes are high.
  • Unblock Teams: Champion engineering best practices to work through technical debt and shifting priorities, even when time is tight.
  • Collaborate and Influence: Partner across Product, Engineering, and Operations to navigate tension, influence without authority, and ship practical, high-speed solutions.

Basic Qualifications
  • 5+ years of combined experience in software engineering and/or Atlassian platform administration and development (Jira/Confluence Cloud or Data Center).
  • Deep proficiency in Jira workflows, custom fields, schemes, permissions, and advanced enterprise configurations.
  • Hands-on experience with Atlassian Forge app development and the Forge platform.
  • Experience using ScriptRunner for complex automation and workflow enhancement.
  • Experience working with Atlassian REST and GraphQL APIs for third-party integrations.
  • Experience managing and configuring Atlassian marketplace apps (e.g., Structure, JEMH, EazyBI).
  • Demonstrated use of AI-powered developer tools in daily engineering workflows (e.g., AI-assisted coding or debugging).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing AI-enabled solutions using Atlassian Rovo Agents and LLM integrations.
  • Expertise in prompt engineering and defining agent actions within enterprise workflows.
  • Proven ability to design enterprise-scale dashboards and analytics using EazyBI.
  • Experience supporting large, complex organizations with rigorous governance requirements.
  • Strong systems thinking and the ability to thrive in high-ambiguity environments.
